eight // dancing in the paris night

Ladybug's POV

I feel the cool wind brush against my face in the Paris night. It's a good distraction from all the chaos from school today. Adrien was so sad, and I don't know why. He only seems to smile around me. I wish I could help him, but he seems to prefer to keep to himself.

I land on a building. I stand near the edge and look off the side and smile. Cars drive by with their bright lights, neon lights flash advertisements, and streetlights fill the peaceful neighborhoods. I hear the slight sound of evening bands playing under the Eiffel tower, and the familiar smell of the cherry trees floating through the air. Paris seems safe, but you never know for sure. Thats why Chat Noir and I always patrol every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

"Hey, you check that corner, and I'll check the street to the side," I suggest.

Chat nods and extends his baton, flinging himself towards the part of town I assigned him to patrol. I swing my yo-yo and fly though the streets, keeping my eyes peeled for any trouble. After a minute or so of nothing, it's safe to assume Paris will be fine for another night. I wave goodbye to Chat Noir and start to make my way home, but he stops me.

"Thank you for everything, Ladybug," he says walking toward me on the building we met up on.

I turn around and look at him confused. "What do you mean?"

"I know you know about my heart turning to glass," he mutters with the same emotionless face. "It means a lot to me that you're willing to help me out, but I don't want you to sympathize me."

I smile and put my hands on my hips. "You're my partner, Chat Noir! We're friends, aren't we? That's what friends do."

He nods slowly, still flinching every time I say "friends".

"Ma- I mean, Ladybug - Could I walk you home?" He whispers,

I look at him with sad eyes.

"Chat, you know that's not a good idea..."

He gently reaches out and holds my hands. I look into his emotionless green eyes and fear rests in my heart. I know his glass heart is growing more everyday. His smile isn't his normal flirty smile anymore, it's sad. Alone. Hurting.

"Okay. You can take me home," I reply quietly. "Tikki, spots off."

My kwami flies out of my earrings and lands in my hands. I slip her into my purse with a fresh macaroon. Chat places his hands on my shoulders, looks at me with the same gentle smile, then leans forwards and kisses me on my forehead.

"Chat, I-" I mumble, shocked.

He looks at me with sad eyes, afraid he did something wrong. No, Marinette, you shouldn't have said anything. He's hurting right now. He needs you.

I smile. "Never mind. Sweep me off my feet and take me home, my prince."

He smiles. But not his emotionless smile, his normal, familiar, cheeky Chat Noir smile. He places one hand on my back and one on my legs, dips me down, and flinging my feet of the ground. The tips of my shoes touch the stars in the sky. He then lifts me back up and he's holding me bridal style. My laughter fills the air like a melody.

"Chat!" I utter, breathless and amazed. "I didn't know you could do that!"

He tilts his head and smirks with his eyes sparkling from the city light.

"Want to see more?"

I eagerly nod.

He jumps I gasp and hold onto him tight, placing my hand on his chest and the other around his shoulders. He soars through the sky like a comet. My ponytails whip through the air as the cool, crisp wind rushes through. The sky is crystal clear, which means the stars are easily visible. I look at Chat Noir and stare at him in awe.

He's happy. His bright green eyes stare confident ahead. A smirk rests on his lips. I sigh and nestle my head into his shoulder. If he's happy, I'm happy too.

"We're here," I hear him announce.

I open my eyes as he gently places my feet on the ground. I gasp and cover my mouth. We're so high up, close to the stars. 20,000 bulbs twinkle and light up my view. We're all alone.

"You took me to the Effiel Tower?" I ask, turning to face Chat.

He beams and laces his fingers with mine. "May I have this dance?"

"Yes, you may," I giggle.

He places his hand on my back and we dance. He gently guides me as I follow his footsteps. The band we hear from below sets the tempo for us with a violin accompanied by a viola. I lean my head against his shoulder and wrap my arms around his neck. My eyes gently close and I focus on my feet delicately moving to the cadence from below.

"Thank you for this, princess," he whispers into my ear.

I grin. "Shh, we're dancing, not talking!"

We continue to slow dance to the band playing below until they slow to a stop. We pull away and stare into each other's eyes.

"Ready to head home?" He asks.

I nod.

He sweeps me off my feet and carries me just like before. He jumps and I feel my stomach drop as we fall. I grip tightly to his shoulder until I feel him land on a building and continue to run. He hops from building to building, holding me tightly to his chest. I feel safe with him holding me. How come I never noticed Chat Noir like this?

"Alright, we're home," he says placing me down on my balcony.

One foot touches the ground, then another. I pull away and look towards the ground with my ears heating up along with my face.

"Thanks, Chat," I whisper.

"Later, m'lady," He replies, then dashes into the Paris night.

I bite my lip and watch him soar away until I can't see him anymore. I sigh, brush my bangs out of my face, and slip into my bedroom. I drag my feet to my bathroom, rinse in a quick shower, then slip on a big t-shirt with sport shorts. I tie my hair up in a messy bun then exit my bathroom. I turn off my lights and slide into my bed, pulling the sheets over my shoulders and snuggling in deep into my pillow.

For once in my life, I fall asleep dreaming of Chat Noir instead of Adrien.

Adrien's POV

My alarm blares through my room. I groan and roll over in my sheets, squinting my eyes through the bright light coming from my windows. Can someone turn the brightness down, please?

I turn off my alarm and sit up in my bed. My feet touch my cold flood. I flinch and pull them up, but then sigh and put them down again. Everything has been so cold lately. I know it's because of my glass heart, but I didn't know it would get this bad.

"Good morning, Adrien!" Plagg chirps.

I grumble and drag my feet to my bathroom. I flick the LEDs on, and the whole room blinds me with its bright light. The bright marble shines bright with its fresh new coat of wax. The many full-body mirrors that line the wall reflect me walking slowly to the sink. I rest my arms on my marble countertop and groan. I look up at my personal mirror. The glass heart really is growing, huh?

I can hardly recognize my face anymore. My bright emerald eyes have been replaced with dim green ones. My brows show no expression. My skin is pale. I look like a mess.

"You need to move on, kid," Plagg remarks. "You're already losing your emotions, I can tell."

"What do you mean?"

Plagg sighs. "Just move on from Ladybug and your heart will be cured!"

I stare at the new me in the mirror.

"I don't know if I can."

"Common kid!" Plagg snaps with his voice cracking. "You're causing yourself so much pain! You can't do this again!"

I whip my head around. "Again?"

I wait for him to answer. He looks at me with big eyes, and for the first time, Plagg looks like he's about to cry.

"There has been so many Chat Noirs that I've lost to the Miraculous diseases, but the most common is the glass heart. It's true, Ladybug and Chat Noir are always meant to fall in love, but that doesn't mean its their destiny to," he explains.

"What do you mean?"

"The Ladybug often has a hard time admitting her love for Chat Noir, but all my Chat Noirs have never moved on to a different love," he explains with tears falling down his cheek. "I've lost so many kittens to the disease. I can't lose another."

I stare at him blankly. "I thought you couldn't die from Glass Heart."

"You can die from the disease, Adrien!" He sobs. "You can, and if you don't move on, you will! I've just lied to you so you wouldn't be scared!"

My expression doesn't change.

"And now, look at you! You don't even care that you could die!" He screams with tears falling down.

"I-I'm sorry Plagg! I know I'm supposed to feel something, but I don't!" I stutter.

"Don't even try to apologize. I know that you don't feel sympathy either," Plagg remarks coldly, flying out of my room.

I want to chase after him, but I don't. I know that I should feel regret, or worry, or sorrow, but I don't feel anything. I don't even feel pain from the glass shards stabbing my heart. I just feel cold. I sigh and look back at the mirror and continue to get ready.

I arrive to school once my bodyguard lets me out of the limousine. Nino calls for me from the building, but I just wave and slowly make my way up the steps with my umbrella protecting me from the pouring rain.

"Woah dude, you okay?" He asks once I reach the top of the entrance. "You look much better than yesterday but you're still acting the same."

"Yeah, I'm okay," I lie, bundling up in my jacket. "Just cold."

"In April? You're weird," he teases, but then his face drops. "There's something I wanted to tell you, by the way."

I tilt my head. "What is it?"

"You've got to get inside. Alya has the picture."

"Huh?"

Nino grabs my arm and drags me to the classroom. "Just trust me."

I enter the classroom and I see Alya sitting in her spot, with no one else in the dim classroom. The rain pounds against the window. The sky is dark and there's no lights on in the silent classroom. Nino closes the door behind me.

"What's going on?" I ask.

"I've noticed you've gotten closer to Marinette. But what are y'all?" Nino mutters, almost afraid to talk.

I look up to the ceiling as I think. "Well, I'd say we're more than friends, but I don't know what she thinks on that standpoint. I would like to be her boyfriend but I haven't asked her out yet."

Nino looks at me in awe. "Y-You can just spit all that out without getting embarrassed or nervous?"

I shrug. "She means a lot to me."

Alya sighs and holds her phone to her chest. "That's what I thought."

I walk closer to Alya. "Okay, I'm officially confused. Just show me the picture already. "

She opens her phone and unlocks it. The bright phone lights up her face in the dark classroom. She pulls up the picture and shows it to me.

She got a picture of me, or, I should say, Chat Noir, dancing with Marinette on the Eiffel Tower.

There's more too. She has pictures of me as Chat Noir kissing Marinette's forehead, holding her I carry her though the night sky, and me dropping her off at her house after our dance.

"Chat Noir?" I ask, trying to be surprised. "Well, I guess if she likes him, it's okay..."

"Busted." Alya smirks.

"E-Excuse me?" I stutter.

"We set up a test. You failed," Nino states.

"I'm not sure I follow..." I mumble.

Alya stands up on her feet and leans over the table, staring directly at me with an intense stare.

"Marinette Dupain-Cheng has loved you since forever, Mr. Agreste."

I start to sweat.

"She wouldn't just move on overnight to some alley cat," she continues, peering into my eyes.

I bite my lip.

"Which leaves me with the only logical answer."

She leans back and smirks, crossing her arms and looking down on me.

"Adrien Agreste, you are Chat Noir."
