Ch. 8: Spring Tournament
Quick A/N before we begin: yES I AM WRITING OUT THIS MATCH. I started playing volleyball and so I know better how it works I guess?? I dont know but at least it will somewhat make sense and not some made up mumbo jumbo some people would write. Also I don't want to write the bonding chapter because its gonna be horrible. Oh Oh. Ye my number is 11 because I love my bae tsukki (it was also my sisters number but she played soccer)
______
The bus ride here was filled with types of chatting. Some about daily lives, family. Other's talked about who we were versing.
Many of us got excited as soon as we stepped out of the bus. Others were filled with nerves, like me.
We are versing Shiratorizawa, a top powerhouse team that has made it through the championships a countless number of times.
Kageyama was filled with excitement. I dont blame him, you could see the sparkle in his eye.
I bet if anyone looked into my eyes they'd look dead. I kept my eyes down.
My legs felt so weak, it felt like I could barely stand up. My feet aren't even close to healed up but I can atleast walk on them, nearly run.
The bruises and wounds and scars that ran up my body... I could feel every single one right now. It was like everyone was staring right at them.. Being told my story by the wounds I yield and the scars I can never get rid of.
The gym was amazing. Three courts side by side with players already warming up, spectators in stand.
It felt like a sight that I didn't deserve, that it was something that I could never reach alone. I still can't but I have everyone beside me.
Time sped by quickly and soon we were on the court.
Shiratorizawa had the serve with Ushijima serving.
Right now I was playing middle, Kageyama was the setter like always. I can see Tanaka on my right so he was a wing spiker. That was all I could focus on right now.
Not the ref that blew the whistle, not the insanely powerful server who was serving.
"Hinata don't sleep!" Sugawara said from the sidelines. I snapped out of this and realized I needed to get off the net.
I nearly tripped but I got there, where I need to be. Daichi barely got the serve but it went over the net.
"Free ball!"
Get ready to block.. get ready to block... get rea- JUMP!
The ball Ushijima had spiked slammed into Tanaka's hands and broke the block. The spike went too fast for Nishinoya to get it.
"Dammit!" Nishinoya slammed a fist into the ground and got back up.
Ushijima easily ranked 7 points before we even got the serve.
It was Kageyama's serve.
His serve went flying over the net, they didn't recieve it well enough and it went over the net.
"Free!" We nearly screamed in unison. Nishinoya easily bumped the ball to Kageyama.
Kageyama's eyes calculated, he knew right now what we needed.
I backed up, feeling the pain in my feet perfectly well "Im here!" I yelled
Getting ready to run, I saw Tanaka back up to the ten foot line. He wasn't going for it. At a split second, as soon as kageyama had set the ball I ran to the other side of the court and jumped.
The familiar feeling of a volleyball was soon to come. Might as well show off what we had been working on- The ball practically stopped infront of me.
The creepy red haired guy saw my spike coming. I slammed the ball straight down and fell. Luckily I didnt fall into the net or line. We had gotten the point.
Plays went as quick as five seconds, some as long as 30.
Shiratorizawa was ranking up points, my arms felt like they were going to bleed. My feet felt like the wounds had opened.
I can't keep up- the world was going blurry.
And in seconds the first set was over. We lost this set 25 to 16.
Every stupid mess up, every single stupid mistake was me.
We gathered together and before Ukai would tell us our positions I stepped in.
"Put me on the bench."
Everyone looked at me with wide eyes. They wouldn't expect for someone like me, for someone who always wants to be in the court helping get every point to want to sit out.
"I mean- I just need a break. Please.."
"Im putting you in once your ready to go in, you know that right?" Ukai asked. I nodded, I know he has faith in me to play.
I dont have that faith anymore, every last bit of hope of winning... living was gone.
The second set went off smoothly, we luckily got to start off with the serve.
Points were given, taken. Going back to back until Ukai had switched me in.
I could feel the wounds on my feet opening with every step.
I can't keep up, our points can't keep up with Shiratorizawa's.
Slowly they went up and slowly I went down. My energy was nearly gone. I felt like with every step I'd fall over.
But I have to push myself. "Kageyama! I'm here!" I ran as hard as I could, harder then I have to day. Tried so damn hard to outrun the blockers and Tendou's guessing game he plays with blocks.
24 points. We cant let them get a single point more.
The ball came to my hand and-
