Chapter 25_Uncertain certainty

Emily watched him kneel on the floor for a moment. She didn't expect him to want to marry her within just a few weeks. That was a big move. He couldn't trust her so much already.

Could he?

She was pregnant for him. They lived together. They loved each other. But the main question was: was she ready to be his wife? Was she ready to go through all odds?

"Yes," she answered his question, plus all the other questions in her head with one word. "Yes, Jonathan, I'll marry you."

Jonathan slowly slid the ring on her finger. It fitted perfectly and was warm. He stood up and joined their lips. The world around them spun as they forget about the real world.

This had always been the life that Jonathan had wanted. He wanted to be successful. He wanted a family of his own. And Emily had completely everything. He had abided by the rule of give and take, and it had given him his status, a perfect woman, and, now, a family.

What more could a man wish for?

Jonathan's car had been right behind Emily's. They reached home together, prepared to tell his parents the good news.

Emily wasn't sure it was going to be good news. She knew she was about to walk into chaos, but she was ready for chaos when she agreed to be Jonathan's wife.

She was going to do whatever it took to protect her family. He was the father of her child, and it wasn't on her agenda for her child to grow up without a father. She had grown up without a father; she knew exactly how it felt, and she wasn't going to let her child face the same thing. Even if it meant going into fire.

They held hands and walked inside the house together. The Misses and the Mister were sitting in the living area. Olivia was with them. Everyone stopped talking and looked at them when they entered the house.

The Misses and Emily shared an uncomfortable eye contact. Emily rolled her eyes away slowly and held onto Jonathan tighter. He was going to protect her. He always did.

"Emily and I are getting married," Jonathan broke the news. He took notice of everyone's reaction. The only one person who was genuinely excited was his father.

"What?" The Misses said out loud, astonished.

Olivia's mouth was agape. She didn't believe it at first, but when her eyes landed on the ring on Emily's finger, she had nothing else to do but believe.

"That's great news. Congratulations," the Mister said. He got up, placing the newspaper he had been reading on the spot he was sitting on. "I'm happy for you two." He hugged both of them together.

The Misses glared at Emily. She managed to quickly fake a smile when Jonathan looked at her, smiling joyfully himself.

The Misses got up to give both of them a hug when her husband took his seat. "Congratulations, you two. I'm glad that you found someone you love," she said, hugging Jonathan. She pulled away from the hug and held his jaws, smiling.

With her heart pounding abnormally, Emily waited for the Misses to give her a hug. Though the Misses was smiling, she could see the glare under the mask.

"You're making a big mistake," the Misses whispered into her eyes when she hugged her. Emily swallowed hard. The Misses pulled away and smiled.

Sam brought water and juice in just when the Misses got through with the hug. The Misses took a glass of water from the tray. She gave the juice to Olivia who had been staring at the ground, lost in her thoughts.

"We're also expecting a baby," Jonathan announced, staring directly at Olivia. He was glad that she was there. She deserved to feel the same way he had felt years ago.

The Misses froze when the glass touched her bottom lip. She lifted her head up slowly. Her entire body was covered in shock.

Olivia almost spilt the juice that was in her mouth. She got up from the couch and walked out of the house.

The Misses slowly placed the glass of water down and followed Olivia outside. She brushed Emily's shoulder as she walked past her.

"Olivia," she called after Olivia, closing the door. "Olivia, wait up."

Olivia stood up. When the Misses spun her around, tears were running down her face. The Misses used her thumbs to wipe the tears off of her face.

"You promised me," Olivia cried the words out. "You promised me that he was going to come back to me. You told me she wasn't a problem. She would be gone when he's gained his father's trust."

"I know. And I'm standing by my words. Emily will be gone. She will be nothing but a memory. You've just got to wait for me to end this charade," she assured Olivia.

"He has already engaged her," Olivia reminded her. "They are even having a baby. He hates me very much." Tears ran out of her eyes again.

The Misses scoffed. "All of those things don't matter. The baby and engagement are nothing but vanities. They can not stop you from getting married to him," the Misses said. "I've always dreamt about both of you being together. You'll make a better spouse. It's you I want. And when I say Emily is only here for a short time, believe it."

She pulled Olivia to her chest. She patted her back, comforting her. When Olivia was much better, she carried her to her car and watched her drive away. She went back inside and found everyone with a champagne glass in their hands.

"What's going on?" She asked them as Jonathan placed a glass in her hand, looking at everyone.

"We're making a toast," Jonathan answered. "A toast to new beginnings, new generation, and a happy family."

"I have a headache. I'm going to bed now." The Misses gave the glass to Sam and walked upstairs.

The Mister shrugged when Jonathan looked at him. He couldn't understand his mom. She had wanted him to come back home and win his father's heart but didn't seem happy when his mission had been accomplished. It didn't make any sense.

She should've started a party but she was giving all of them a cold shoulder. If it was because of Olivia, she had to change her plans. He was done with her. No matter what happened, he wasn't going back to Olivia.

She had put him through a lot. He had taken a long time to heal. Emily had done the things she should have done, and nobody could change his mind about her. They were getting married, and that was that.

Everyone in the living room made a toast. They shared a moment of laughter before the Mister got tired and decided to go to bed. Jonathan walked with him upstairs.

Emily didn't want to look at Sam, but they were alone, and she could not dodge him. Though she was helping him clean the place, she could feel his eyes on her instead of the utensils

"Are you sure about what you're doing, Emily?" He asked her. He paused and stared at him.

"I don't know," she replied with all honesty. "I'm not doing this for me. It's for my baby. I don't want my child to grow up without a father."

Sam nodded his head in understanding. "I know. Just know that you've got my support." He put all the glasses and bottles in one tray. He threw his towel on his shoulder and walked to the kitchen door. He paused and faced her. "Be careful," he said and walked away.

Emily sighed. She sat in the same spot she had sat the first day she came. She reclined and stared at the ceiling, touching her stomach.
