MELISSA SCOTT WAS THE WHEELER family's next door neighbor. Mike Wheeler had actually labeled the girl his 'slightly less annoying sister'. She visited the Wheeler home more than once, and spent a few too many hours with the oldest child. She babysat Holly when was needed, and was overall a family member of the Wheeler's. So, when Mike's close friend goes missing, she makes it a mission of hers to help find him, since the police weren't doing shit.

And to do that, she'd need a little help from a few of her friends. Or, maybe people she'd never spoken too for over five minutes. There were four girls she decided on in the end. All were excluded from school (like Mel herself, that's mainly how she knew them) but they had qualities that would help.

Amanda Hale was her first choice of help- Amanda was excluded from Hawkins High for being 'fat'. In reality, Mandy was a kindhearted girl, with a heart made of gold. Mel decided that could be helpful.

Elizabeth Lee came next. The second Eliza entered her school with her hair chopped off, she was treated like a ghost. Did Eliza get sad? No, she got pissed. So you cut off your hair and get excluded from school? Highschool could eat her ass.
( And it may have also have to do with the fact that she punched a kid and broke his nose the same day, but whatever. )
Eliza was responsible and brave, which may come in handy while searching for Will Byers.

Danielle Diaz was third. Dani- she was bullied for being Puerto Rican. Dani was shy, quiet, and reserved. But she knew when was a good time to step up and be loud. Mel liked that about her.

And last came Whitney Smith. Whitney had what seemed like hundreds of rumors surrounding her- (I heard she killed her parents! She was expelled from her last school! and so on). The first one couldn't be more incorrect. Her parents were still alive for fucks sake. The second one may be true, but whatever.
Whitney was definitely a 'rebel'. And she knew how to put up a fight. Which would surely be helpful.

So, after a lot of persuading (and a bit of bribing), the five girls teamed up to help find Will Byers. They broke the law a few times, and got dragged into a heap load of trouble. In the end, they decided they wouldn't have it any other way.
