"When are you going to get a real job?" Asked my roommate's monotone voice from the kitchen. I thought about the question for a while, I didn't really know how to answer because I thought what I had was a real job. I mean, I was washing hair at the salon for twelve bucks an hour. I could pay the bills and buy food for both my roommate and I. Well, kinda. We're living off Ramen Noodles and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
She walked into the living room, where I was sitting and she sat down in the recliner in front of me and turned off the TV. "I'm being serious, Katie. You walk in the door from work every day upset because you're not making enough money." She's right. It honestly sucks to admit it, but she is right.
"I will get one soon, I know I will. I just need to make enough money to put me through school and then i'll be okay. I promise, then we will be set to go and we can move into a house instead of an apartment."
Kylie looked at me with a little bit of a relieved look, but I could tell she was still worried. She's my roommate, but we're also really close. Which is weird, I don't know.
"Do you want to watch Jeopardy?" She smiled, flashing her drug rotted teeth and laughed.
"Oh my hell, of course." I smiled back, and gave her a laugh.
We watched a few hours of game shows until she got up to take her medications and go to bed, so I made my way to my room and pulled out my laptop. I opened it and powered it on. When it powered on, I opened up straight to Facebook and texted my group chat.
I can't believe that I graduated high school four years ago and people are already getting married and having babies of their own. It's fucking insane. I was scrolling down and I swear I saw three people who got engaged.
But that's when something weird happened.
I got a message from my old friend Brendon, which is completely bizarre because we haven't talked since graduation night. I wasn't going to open the message but curiosity got the best of me and I ended up reading it.
Not going to lie, it was a weird message. He asked me to skip work tomorrow and meet him at the coffee shop tomorrow to discuss something he had in mind.
Of course I agreed because I wasn't sure how else I would respond without feeling like a complete bitch. So I agreed to meet up with him at nine in the morning. But I wasn't sure he wanted to hit me up like that, we weren't even that close of friends so I was really taken back.
But I'm probably overthinking this shit again, I just think it was weird.
In perfect timing, Kylie walked into my bedroom in her bath towel and sat down next to me on my bed, "Dude, Brendon hit me up?"
Her natural face turned to more of a confused look, "Wait the one you used to talk about when you were graduating?"
"Yeah, that one?"
"Wait, what? Katie, he's married." She bit her lip in an anxious matter and shrugged, "If he's trying to get like..in your pants? What are you gonna do?"
"Shit, I don't know?" I paused, "This is weird because I like, used to think he was super super cute, and now were out of high school for like four years and just..wow."
"To be honest Katie, it's probably the selfies you have on your Facebook. Because they are good." Kylie laughed, and punched my shoulder.
Kylie stood up and walked out of my room so she could go change and go to bed, I got up and walked to the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I threw off my shirt and took off my bra. Let me tell you, pretty bomb ass feeling. I took off my pants and underwear and threw those on the floor too.
When I stepped in the shower I nearly lost my shit because of how hot it was, but even getting burned so bad didn't take Brendon off my mind. I didn't know why this was such a big deal too?
When I got out of the shower I put my pajamas on and put my computer away, and I went to my apps on my phone and messed around on social media until I got a little bit drowsy.
I didn't even notice that Brendon texted me until I opened my Messenger, he was talking about how to get to the coffee shop on main street, I'm pretty sure I've seen it a thousand times.
He and I were having a conversation about how things were going in our lives now, and I found out he's a multimillionaire now days because he's in this band. I knew about the band he was in, and how popular they were. I just didn't think he made so much money from it. He bragged about it, but honestly. If I had that money, I would too.
I think I was trying to respond to his comment on how my life was going, but my eyelids got heavier and I drifted to sleep.
