Chapter 9
"Uhm... Madelyn?" began Trinity "What just happened?"
"According to Ashlea, I have a power."
"Over healing? But nobody with control over healing could ever heal wounds caused by bronze. It's impossible!"
"Well, the impossible is now possible. I don't know why, and if Ashlea could be bothered to tell me, I'd be a lot happier." I said, hoping she'd take the hint.
"I honestly don't know. I'm as shocked as you. But hey, look on the bright side; at least you're not injured."
"She doesn't know," I explained "But we need to get to that shifter society."
I snatched up my bag, flapping my wings. I moved them quickly, struggling to get into the air. I had only flown twice, and I wasn't that used to it. Heck, I had only found out about this yesterday! I looked over my shoulder, seeing Trinity fly up.
"You ready to go?" she asked, and I nodded. "Then let's go."
I flew straight out of that alley, going up, up, up. The wind blew my hair back, and it was exhilarating. I felt so free, so alive. I took a deep breath, feeling so safe, calm, and relieved. I flapped my wings, moving them to propel myself through the air. I looked to my side, seeing Trinity propel herself up beside me.
"This feels amazing," I commented, facing the wind. My hair moved in ripples behind me. No wonder people have dreamt of flying; it's amazing.
"Isn't it?" I heard Trinity reply "I remember when I first shifted. It was so beautiful. I was actually a little upset that my parents had kept it from me. My parents! I have to go back and rescue them!"
"Trinity," I began "Calm down. Breathe in, breathe out. We'll go and rescue her. I doubt they have headed to your father's work yet. Now, show me where it is, and we'll fly there."
"But they'll see our wings." Trinity pointed out. Right.
"Then we'll be stealthy and sneak in. Now, show me where he is."
Trinity nodded, darting through the air with her powerful wings. Peregrine falcon. Right.
"Wait for me!" I shouted, trying to catch up with her. She stopped for a minute and I flew up next to her.
"Sorry." she apologized.
"Don't be," I replied "You're concerned for your family. That's fine."
Trinity nodded, and I followed her. When I saw her father's work, my jaw dropped.
It was smoldering, fire covering every visible part of the building. Men clad in red shot water at the building, trying to tame the vicious flames. I looked at Trinity, seeing a horrified expression being worn upon her face.
"We have to go save my dad!" she shouted.
"It's too dangerous!" I argued "And I doubt that he's dead. He's a shifter. Surely he's found a way out!"
A voice shouted at me from below. "Shifters! Come here. I'm from the village; we will help you. Just come here, and we will assist you."
I looked down, seeing a girl about seventeen staring up at us. I glanced at Trinity.
"Can we trust her?"
"I don't know. " began Trinity "But she knows that we're shifters."
An idea came to mind. "How about this. We fly up above her and tell her to shift. If she does, we can trust her. If not, we fly away."
"I don't know." I heard Trinity "My dad could be trapped in there!"
"But if she's from the shifter village, she could help us!"
Trinity sighed, and I watched as she glanced at the burning ruins.
"Let's go."
I flew towards her, trying to get the rhythm of the wing beats correct.
"If you're from the shifter village, then shift. Prove that you're on our side." I instructed.
"I knew you'd want me to. Can't be too careful these days. Just make sure nobody's watching, and I'll do it."
I looked around. Nobody saw the peculiar sight that was Trinity and I; they were all focused on the smoldering building. I saw smoke rise from the ruins, and many people coughed raspily. But none of the people were looking at us.
"Nobody's looking." I informed "Now shift."
I watched as brown fur enveloped her, and she fell to her hand and feet. They were now hooves. He face protruded and her bones crunched. She was changing into a deer.
After she had shifted, she looked at the both of us. My jaw had dropped, and I probably looked stupidly shocked.
"Shift back and take us to the shifter village."
"But Madelyn," I heard Trinity begin "What about my dad? He could still be in there!"
At that very moment, a feather drifted down. It looked singed at the edges.
The girl, who had shifted, began to speak. "It looks a little singed at the tips, but otherwise, it's okay." She looked at Trinity "Does this feather look like your father's?"
Trinity nodded, and the girl started to speak again. "It looks to me that your father got a tab burnt, but is otherwise alright. We'll help you find him once we get to the town. Now, follow me from the air. In your bird forms, preferably. It was quite irresponsible of you two to go flying about the human town as you are now."
"But what about our items?" I asked.
She sighed. "Fine, but be careful. I'll shift; you two follow me."
I nodded, as did Trinity, and we flew up. I watched the girl as she changed into a deer, and then bounded towards the woods. We followed her, and soon, we were in the forest. As I looked to the side, I saw two dogs playing. I went lower, listening in to their conversation.
"Come here, mutt butt!" barked one.
"Just because my mom was a lab shifter and my dad was a poodle shifter doesn't mean I'm a mutt!"
I laughed to myself, flying up to join Trinity. I felt the air blow back my hair, and I went up, feeling the thrill of flying overtake me. I was free.
A/N- How did you like that chapter? I enjoyed writing it. Madelyn and Trinity have reached the Shifter Town, but what awaits them there?
