Chapter 7

I listened in to the conversation between Trinity and her mom.

"Someone caught us on video," explained Trinity "It was on the news. What do we do?"

There was a long period of silence. Well, just for me. Trinity's mom was talking to Trinity, but I couldn't hear."

"I'll tell Madelyn. When will you be home?"

Silence. Then, "I'll see you then, bye."

Trinity hung up, then looked at me.

"Get some food and your bag. Then head to the basement."

"Your house has a basement?" I asked.

"Yes. Now go. My mom will be home soon, and we don't know when they'll get there. And the people searching for us might've traced our call. I don't know. But get your stuff and head down to the basement."

I nodded, my heart beating fast. I had a good enough sense to know what would happen if I didn't hide. I ran to my room, quickly grabbed my bag, and dashed to the kitchen. What will last long, I asked myself.

"Rice. There's also honey and sugar."

"I'm not gonna live off of honey, rice, and sugar. And besides, how would I cook the rice?"

"You could make a fire."

I sighed. "Fine."

I grabbed a box, placing it into a bag, along with a couple of chocolate chip granola bars. I didn't know how long it would last, and I didn't care. Hey, just because we're gonna be on the run doesn't mean that I can't have my chocolate.

"It won't last long. Granola can spoil."

"Well, I want chocolate."

I spotted a box of pop-tarts.

"And these too."

I shoved the box in my bag.

"Plus, you're going to teach me how to hunt, correct?"

"I am. Just head to the living room so Trinity can show you where the basement."

I walked to the living room, my pace fast.

"You ready?" asked Trinity.

I nodded.

"Follow me."

Trinity led me back to where I just had been; the pantry.

"Uhm... I was just here. And I don't see a basement."

"Look down at under the shelves."

I looked and saw a door. A small, square door.

"Oh. So, we go in?"

"Yes." She swung open the door, and a dark abyss was what I saw. Okay, I know I'm exaggerating a bit, but it looked pretty dark.

"Is it safe?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Yes. We go down here sometimes for drills, and we went back there a few days ago. It's perfectly safe."

"Alright," I said with a sigh. Trinity got to her hands and knees, crawling in. I copied her stance, following her. When I shut the door, I couldn't see a thing. A foul odor drifted into my nose.

"What died in here?" I questioned.

"Two mice and a rabbit. And there was that lizard too."

"Please tell me you're kidding."

"I'm not. Sorry."

"Gross."

"You do realize that you're going to have to start hunting soon, right?"

"Ashlea? Please stop."

"I'm just reminding you."

All of a sudden, I thought of the perfect nickname.

"Tweety bird, stop."

"Don't call me that."

I sighed. "Fine, I'll stop."

"For now," I muttered under my breath.

"I heard you, Madelyn."

"Fine, I'll stop."

I continued to work my way through the tunnel. My wings ached from having to hold them in, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to fit into the tunnel if they were spread out. I sighed, feeling the hard material scratch at my knees. Soon, I saw the room. I was only able to see a glimpse of it, as Trinity was in front of me, but I saw it.

"Is this it?" I asked.

"Yep." I heard her answer "It conceals pretty well, but it's not soundproof. So, we'll have to be quiet. Every sound we make can be heard from the pantry."

So, no music without headphones. At least I brought my Bluetooth ones.

"Okay. So, are we gonna communicate via texts?"

"Sorry to break it to you, but phone service doesn't reach here."

"Do you have wi-fi down here or something?"

"No, but I doubt that we'll be down here for long."

"So, what do we do?" I asked, sitting on the cold, concrete floor.

"If you brought your phone, you could listen to music."

"Alright. I have eight hours of music, let it begin."

I pulled out my phone and headphones and started at the beginning of my favorite track. I had created it, and it was composed of all my favorite songs. I hummed softly to the tune of Demons. I smiled. Even in the middle of chaos, Imagine Dragons could always bring a smile to my face.

About one-fourth of the way through the track, I heard the sound of footsteps. Alarmed, I looked in the direction of the noise. It was Trinity's mom. I paused the song that was on; Jar of Hearts, and waved at her, relieved.

"Hi." I greeted.

"Are you two prepared?" she asked. What? No hi, hello, what's up?

I nodded and saw that Trinity had done the same.

"That's good. We'll work in shifts, listening for the people. I'll go first. " she instructed. I nodded, turning the music back on. The tunes started, and I relaxed. So much had happened yesterday and today, and I really needed to relax. Seriously, I think that much stress is bad for you. Song after song assured me that everything was going to be alright.

After an hour or so, someone tapped on my shoulder. It was Trinity's mom. I paused the music, removing the headphones.

"It's your shift." she whispered, and I nodded, getting to my feet. I then kneeled down beside he entrance. My bag was beside me, and I listened intently. The safety of Trinity, her mom, and I depended upon me. My heartbeat was fast, and I felt scared. I bit nervously at my already short nails. Funny, they were all fairly long before yesterday. I tried to calm myself, lowering my hand.

Almost an hour had passed when I sneezed.

"I heard something coming from there." said a voice.

Oh. Crap.
