Chapter 6

"What do you mean?"

Then, everything came back to me. What Trinity had said about hunters attacking the supernatural, either killing them or using them as slaves.

"But you said that you'd know if there were hunters. You said that there weren't any traps!"

"We only assumed that there were no hunters because there were no traps." explained Trinity's mom "But now that we know, we need to be especially careful. And that means no leaving the house, you two. Your wings would stick out like a sore thumb."

I sighed, but then replied with "Alright."

"Now, let's get the wound bandaged, and then it's off to bed. We have a futon you can sleep on, Madelyn."

"I'm not going to be sleeping on an actual bed for a while, am I?"

She shook her head. "I'm sorry. But I'll hold off on giving you schooling for a week, if that makes you feel any better."

"Thanks." I thanked "Say, can I go lay down now?"

"Like I said, I need to bandage the wound first. I'm gonna warn you; it's gonna sting."

I sighed, for what seemed the millionth time today, and braced myself for the pain. Fire seemed to burn in my wound as the wrap was placed over my injured wing. It stung worse than I had ever felt. I closed my eyes, gripping the couch's material. Soon, the pain dulled, and I relaxed.

"Come on Madelyn," began Trinity "Let's head to my room."

I nodded, pain rushing through my body as I stood up. I walked to the room, catching a glimpse of the night sky through a window.

"Man, it's late." I remarked.

"Yes, it is."

I glanced at the clock, which read 11:11. So many ones. Trinity lifted the futon down, and I sat on it. I glanced at my bandaged wing. Blood stained the material, and I could smell the unpleasant scent coming off of it. I zipped open my bag, removing my phone from it. Looks like I have some Writepad notifications.

There were three notifications. Two followers and a vote. Nothing too big.

"I'm heading to sleep." I commented "Goodnight."

"Night." I heard Trinity reply.

Though my mind was racing, I eventually calmed, and exhaustion took over. Before I knew it, it was day.

My eyes opened, and I took in my surroundings. Where am I?

"Don't you remember?"

The events of the day before rushed back to me. I had become a bird shifter, found out that my friend was one, had gotten wings, was shot at by my parents, injured by them, and found out that they were hunters.

"I do. Yesterday was quite the day."

"It was."

All of a sudden, the pain in my wing rushed back to me.

"Dangit." I muttered.

"Do you happen to have some sort of medicine or way to block the pain?" I asked, gripping at the futon, trying to relieve my pain.

"Sorry."

"So that's a no?"

"Yes, it's a no."

"Oh."

I noticed that Trinity wasn't in the room. I leapt from the futon, leaving the room. The air smelled of pancakes. Yum. I reached the kitchen, and a welcome sight was before me. They seemed to be the perfect color, made just right. And there were chocolate chips too!

"Thank you." I thanked.

"No problem." Then, Trinity's mom looked at Trinity "I'm going to do some stuff today, errands and such. Your father is at work. Don't answer the door for anybody, alright?"

Trinity's mom slung a bag over her shoulder. "I'll see you at around three. Bye."

"Bye." I said, finishing up the pancakes. I heard the door shut, and I stood up, feeling pain yet again. Why did I have to be attacked? Why did my parents have to be hunters? I noticed Trinity was sitting on the couch, and I sat beside her.

"Hey Madelyn." I heard Trinity greet.

"Hi." I replied "Why did my parents have to go and attack me like that? They're my parents. They're supposed to support me in everything. Yet they went and attacked me."

"Some people are soul-less. They're hunters. I didn't know that. Nobody did. Don't blame yourself."

Trinity began to speak. "Hunters are evil, Madelyn. And I told you not to tell your parents. I had a feeling something like this would happen if it was told."

"But how was I supposed to hide these," I gestured towards my wings "From my parents?"

"I don't know. But now you're injured, and if they attacked, you could die!"

I sighed. "I know. Can we watch tv or something? I don't want to talk about my chances of survival."

"Okay." The tv was switched on, and the channel that was on was the news.

"In Haines City, Florida, two kids with wings were found dropping from the sky. Here is the footage given to us by an anonymous viewer."

Please, by some rare chance, don't let it be us. But it was. It was myself, with my injured wing, and Trinity. I watched in horror as the video caught Trinity flying, and my yelling as the feather was plucked.

The video ended. "Investigators are searching for the pair of children with wings. If you have any information on the winged kids, please call the number on your screen."

"Holy crap." I commented "This is bad."

"Agreed. I'm gonna call mom."

I nodded, an anxious feeling rising up inside of me. I felt sick to my stomach. It's just my nervousness, I told myself.

"Not trying to make you freak out, but this is bad. Remember what I told you about possible experimentation? Well, that's what's gonna happen if your wing doesn't heal fast."

"And how long is it going to take to heal?" I asked, fearing what the answer would be.

"With normal weapons, it'd be about a week, due to the quick healing of shifters. But because you were attacked with bronze, it'll take about a month or two to completely heal. Don't freak out; we'll figure this out."

"But I can't fly, and they're searching for us. For us. And I doubt they'll be easily stopped. Oh, what are we going to do?"
