Chapter 44

We flew for a few minutes, until Tyler glanced at me. I stopped, still staying in the air.

"What is it?" I asked.

"We're right above Jackson's cabin. Look."

He pointed to an area below several branches, and I looked. There was an old looking shack. "Is that it?" I asked.

"It is." he answered "He might not be home, though. We'll just have to hope that he is. And if he isn't, we can wait."

I nodded, then landed. Glancing at the cabin, I said "Anyone home?"

I heard footsteps as a boy stepped out. He glanced behind me, at Tyler.

"So this is the girl you told me about."

I glanced at Tyler, who smiled at me. I smiled back, then looked at the boy. "Tyler says that you can get the tracker out of me."

"I can. Follow me."

He walked into the cabin, leaving soft footprints in the dust. I followed, and Tyler was behind me. The cabin was dark, with faint outlines of objects all around me. Then, I saw a dim light appear. It was Jackson, who was holding an old, worn out looking flashlight.

"Sorry about the lack of light." he apologized "I don't get access to electricity out here, so I have to make do with this old thing." He gestured toward the flashlight.

"Why can't you go out in public?" I asked. After all, he did look normal. Even if he did have something, it wasn't nearly as obvious as my wings. He turned around and shone the light on his neck. There were red scales the color of fire, and they shone against the light. Alright, now I saw why. But what type of shifter was he?

"There aren't many anymore, after the hunters killed the majority of them off."

"So what shifter is he?"

"Dragon." She answered, as if it were nothing at all. I felt my heart beat faster, in nervousness.

I glanced at Jackson, who had turned around and was now looking at me. "So... uhm..." I paused for a moment "You're a dragon shifter..."

He nodded. "I have been for my entire life."

I looked at him. "Are you going to... I don't know... shift and destroy me? Because you have the capability to turn me into a Madelyn-kabob."

He face-palmed. "Most dragons and dragon-shifters don't do that. It's those rebel dragons who think they're better than everyone else who burn entire kingdoms to the ground. But I'm not like that."

"Good." I said, relieved. I relaxed a bit, then focused to the more important situation. "So, like I said earlier, there's a tracker in me, and Tyler says you know how to get it out."

Tyler tapped my shoulder, and I looked around.

"He does, though it takes a few hours."

Now Tyler had me confused. "What do you mean?"

"He can remove an item from existence. You know how when you heal, if there's a bullet, it goes away? It's kind of like that. But, he has to be careful, so he doesn't accidentally damage you. That's why it takes a few hours."

"And it's safe?"

Jackson spoke. "I've done it many times, and it's perfectly safe, as long as you stay still and allow me to focus. However, there was a time where someone had came to me and I accidently made them loose a finger. But that was years ago, and they got a prosthetic finger, so they're fine."

I wasn't so sure. I glanced out the doorway, wondering if it was too late to fly out.

"Madelyn," I heard Tyler begin "It's fine. Trust me."

Though I didn't entirely trust Jackson, I did trust Tyler. "Alright," I said with a sigh "Where do I sit?"

"Over there." Tyler pointed at an old looking chair, and I sat down. Jackson looked at me. "Just remain silent and still. The tracker will be out in a few hours."

A thought came to me. "Wait... how do you know where the tracker is?"

"It's part of the gift; if there are any obstructions, I'll feel them."

I nodded. This was going to be a long few hours. I kept my focus on the workbench in the corner, looking at everything on it. Boring, I know, but when you're sitting in a chair, doing nothing for three hours straight, you get bored.

Sometimes, while I sat there in a daze, little shocks would run through my arm. And Jackson would assure me that everything was alright. Yeah, when a dragon-shifter with the ability to destroy things causes shocks, that's definitely not a reason to panic. Note the sarcasm.

But, Tyler kept reassuring me that everything would be alright, and eventually, I'd be calm again, and go back into that little daze, until the cycle began again. This went on for three hours, until a voice woke me from my thoughts. It was Tyler.

"He's done."

I got up, muscles stiff. I went outside for a brief second, stretched, then came back in. I looked at my arm.

"Was that where the tracker was?"

"Yes." replied Jackson. "It wasn't in there too deep, so it was easier than if it had been in there for years."

It looked the same, and was the same, except for two things. My arm was a little numb, but I was told that was just a side affect. And then, according to both Tyler and Jackson, the tracker was gone. They wouldn't be able to track me anymore! If this had been a few weeks ago, I would've just gotten my closest friends and ran.

But now I had responsibilities. I had made a promise to Caspian, and I wasn't going to let him down.

I glanced at Tyler. "Let's head home. I'm going to say a few things to the other shifters." Then, I looked at Jackson. "Thanks for the help."

"It's no problem." he replied "I hope this battle comes out with the shifters as the winning side."

"Me too."

We flew back to camp. It had transformed, with weapons stored together, and some shifters trying to figure out how to use them. I smiled.

"We might actually win this war."

"No, I know we will."

A/N- Just wow...
