Chapter 37
I awoke, and all the memories of the previous events rushed back to me. Then, I realized the restraints. I was chained to the wall, and when I tried to get free, the bronze cuffs chaffed at my wrists, bringing a horrible stinging with it.
The room was completely white. When I say that, I mean pretty much everything. Other than myself, everything was white. It was a change from the woods I had lived in for the past month now. I could hear ominous sounding footsteps, and my dread grew as the footsteps came closer. A man clad entirely in white stepped in. I sent him an angry glare, and he smirked.
"Oh, is the little tweety bird upset?"
"Okay, now I see how that had offended you."
"Yes, but we have bigger problems right now."
I stared the man down. "As a matter of fact, yes, yes I am upset. But you can fix that by bringing the squirrel shifter to me, bringing Tyler to me, and letting us out of this place!"
"Like I'd do that. Now, it's time for you to learn a few things, and undergo a mental transformation."
Like brainwashing? As if I didn't know what he was trying to do.
"Oh shut the heck up," I fired back, my voice trembling a little "I will not be brainwashed, especially by someone as low as you!"
"We are not 'the bad guys', Madelyn. The shifters are, and they've tricked you. They've lulled you into a false sense of security, Madelyn, and they've brainwashed you in a way. We're the right side, Madelyn."
"Don't trust him, Madelyn. It's part of the brainwashing method. Don't believe a word he says."
"Wasn't planning on it. Thanks to my sixth-grade obsession with hypnosis and other stuff like it, I know exactly what he's trying to do."
"And even if you hadn't, I'd still be able to explain it."
The man spoke again. "You are not who you think you are. Your friends are not who you think they are. You are fighting on the wrong side."
"No I'm not! I'm fighting on the right side, and there's nothing you can do to change that!" I fired back, anger surging through my veins. I tried to pull out of the restraints, but there was something on them that caused my wrists to feel burnt.
"You are not who you think you are. You are not a soldier for good. You are not who you think you are."
I felt anger flood me, and my hands clenched into fists. It was all I could do not to create Swear-fest 2015.
"I know just who I am. And if you think that what you say can change that, then you're wrong. You're a stupid little idiot."
His face twisted into a display of anger. Then, after a second or two, it reverted back to the usual blank stare that most of the hunters had. I had to stop myself from grinning.
"You are not who you think you are. You are not a soldier. You are not defending the shifters."
"Yes, I am. Now, shut up, shut up, shut up!"
It had taken all the courage I had to make more insults, but oh was it worth it. He glared, and I noticed that he was clenching his fists. His face was twisted into an ugly, angered face. I couldn't help it, and a smirk appeared on my face.
He stepped forward, raising his fist. "You are not who you think you are. You are not a soldier. You are not defending the shifters."
I would've kicked him if I hadn't been chained down. "Yes, I am."
"You are not who you think you are. You are not a soldier. You are not defending the shifters."
He kept on repeating those words over and over again, and I would've covered my ears. But, I was chained down, and couldn't.
"Try and tune it out, Madelyn. Think of something else to distract you."
I searched my mind for something to think about. Anything would work; I mean, with wacko repeating the same words over and over again, and being stuck here, chained down. This was worse than any grounding I could ever get. Wait - why was I thinking about this? Why was I thinking about these minor things when Tyler and everyone else could be suffering?
I tried to get through the restraints, only to feel the painful burn of something coating the bronze. What even was it? I didn't know.
"I am not some mindless puppet that you can bend to your will!" I shouted "Stop saying these lies and let me free!"
"You are the prized project of Mr. Jones. All the others have died, and yet you've lived. Since you refuse to comply, we must introduce you to the truth."
"The words you're repeating aren't the truth! They're big, fat lies! Now let me free, or you will get what you deserve!"
"Oh, but how are you going to do that when you're chained down? You're no soldier. You are not defending the shifters. You are not who you think you are."
What did he think he was? A broken record? He sure sounded like one.
"Agreed."
"So, while I'm talking to you, do you happen to know how to stop this burning substance thing?"
"No. It isn't anything I've ever encountered in my entire lifetime. There's a possibility that it was made by the scientists, because I'd know if there was some sort of plant, herb, or related natural item that'd be able to do this."
"Oh. Well, maybe they'll have noticed we haven't returned and send out rescue parties."
"That certainly is likely."
The man clad in white kept repeating his words, and I kept hoping that someone would find me and take me away from this place. The man repeated his words for hours. Eventually he left. And I was left with the very difficult task of falling asleep. I knew what they were trying to do. Sleep deprivation was going to aid them with the brainwashing. And even when I started to drift off, a shock would go through my body, jolting me awake.
It felt like pure torture.
If someone had told me I'd be stuck there for two weeks, I would've thought they were crazy.
A/N- Looks like we're moving into my area of expertise.
Don't ask why I had an obsession with hypnosis, I just did.
