Chapter 33
"Let me go, you fool!" I heard him shout.
"No!" I fired back. I was going to head back to the shifters, and I was going to figure out just what this project was. "You are going to give me the information. What exactly is this project?"
"I'll never tell!"
"Try and tell him that you're gonna drop him. Always works."
"It looks like my grasp is slipping, slipping, slipping." I said, loosening my grasp slightly as I flew higher.
"He'll break any second now. Wait for it... wait for it..."
"Fine, I'll speak, I'll speak!" he squeaked "Please don't kill me. I'll do anything."
"Told you."
"Exactly how long have you been doing all this sort of stuff?"
"Many, many years."
I dived down, gripping the squirrel shifter. Now, where were the shifters? It was a huge group of animals; it looked like a zoo breakout! Surely they couldn't hide that easily. Soon, I saw them, and I landed on a branch.
"I'm back with a hostage. Tyler, you know who it is."
He looked at me. "Oh, you've got him. Was he spying on you again?"
I shifted back, flying down. "Probably. But I think he knows something. Anyone have some sort of power to make a cage or something?"
A grey and white-furred rabbit hopped forward. She made a cage from vines, with the top open. "Place him in, I'll make the top."
I dropped him in the cage, and vines rose up, creating the top. She hopped back to the crowd.
"Now, tell me about this 'project'."
"Never! My master has given me instructions to remain silent on this information."
"Mr. Jones has told you to remain silent? Do you work for him? Or has he forced you to do this?"
He muttered something incomprehenseble.
"What was that?" I asked.
"Nothing. My master has given me his order to remain silent."
"Tell me now, or I might just have to take you on another flight."
"You don't scare me, project." he said in a sneer.
"About this project." I replied, trying to seem in control "What does it have to do with me?"
"That is for me to know, and you to wonder about for the rest of your pathetic life."
"Oh, then I wonder how long it takes a squirrel to die at the talons of an owl. Or at the talons of an eagle."
"Your threats don't scare me. We both know that you need me for information."
Is he reading my mind or something? I mean, seriously! Why do people keep seeing through the act?
"Oh, but what you don't know is that I'd also gladly destroy you. Play your cards right, and you might make it out alive. But only if you tell. I'm waiting."
"I'll never tell, pathetic project." he growled. Sure, he has to go and go after that project thing, making me wonder about that thing.
"Tell me now. Might I remind you that you're the one that's caged?"
"And why would I tell you when I'd suffer punishment if I did?"
"So, you're being forced to spy?"
"Why would I tell you? If I was being forced, I could easily run off!"
This is when Mr. Mind-Reader was needed.
"Tyler," I began "Please come over here."
When he was beside me, I said to him. "You can mind read. Tell me what he's thinking."
A minute or two later, Tyler looked at me. "He's being forced .There's a tracker about the size of a grain of rice implanted in him."
"You don't have to stay with the hunters. I remember how bad it was when I was captured by them. Why don't you just stay with us; we could protect you."
"But it puts you at risk, an punishment is heavy for those escaped. I'm staying with the hunters, and there's nothing you can do to change that."
"Then you can at least tell me about this project thing."
"Never! I would be severely punished for revealing secrets of the hunters! It would be a fatal move!"
I looked at Tyler. "Tell me stuff."
He nodded, and went silent. I paced anxiously, waiting for his answer.
"Oh no." I heard him mutter.
"What is it? Whatever it is, I can take it." I wasn't entirely sure of that, but he didn't know. Or did he?
"It would hurt you too much, Madelyn. I won't hurt you. I refuse to."
I refused to be treated like that! I wasn't some weak little kid!
"Tell me! I can take it!"
"No!"
"Yes!"
I watched him take off, and I followed him. I tried to go faster, faster, faster still, not caring how exhausted it made me. Adrenaline flooded my veins, giving me all the energy I needed.
"Get back here! Tell me what it is!"
"I won't hurt you!"
"And you won't! Just tell me! I'm not some little kid! I can take it!"
I tried to fly faster, anger swelling up inside of me.
"Tell me!"
Determination burned in me, and I went faster. I didn't want him keeping anything from me! I didn't want to live in the oblivion! I had already suffered through so much of it! I didn't want any more!
Soon, he turned around.
"Madelyn, I refuse to hurt you." he said "I know you don't want to be deceived."
"Tell me. I promise; I can take it."
After a long argument, he caved.
"Madelyn, they've been observing you your entire life. They've been wanting to make you a weapon of ultimate destruction. They've snuck in, done injections, then left. They've modified you to take over the shifters. They've given you powers that have the capability to kill many. When your shifter spirit was in her physical form, a fox shifter attacked her and modified her. She didn't know it; only the hunters did. And they're tracking you. Everything you do, everywhere you go, they know. They're coming to attack, and they plan to erase your memories. They're planning to brainwash you to become the ultimate weapon. They're planning to make you kill your own kind."
A/N- Go ahead, shout at me. Yell at me; I deserve it. All authors are evil.
And I'm not even the worse. I could just pull a Veronica Roth...
I won't, but I could.
