Chapter 13
I landed on a tree branch, shock overtaking me. I folded my wings in tight, trying to stop the shivers of fear that were rippling through my body. I looked out. The boy was long gone, and I was feeling hopeless. Why had I been so stupid?
I banged my head against the tree. Stupid, stupid, stupid!
"Stop it Madelyn; you're gonna hurt yourself."
I sighed and stopped banging my head. "Why did this have to happen?"
"It wouldn't have happened if you had just told Caspian."
I sighed once again, knowing that Ashlea was right. I looked out, trying to see if that boy was still there. He wasn't.
"I know. And I was being stupid. Which explains why I was banging my head against the tree. I'm stupid."
"No, you're not. I've seen many exposures before, and most supernatural don't even last a day. They're captured or killed. But you're still safe, and you can do it. I believe in you. Now, you need to go tell Caspian."
"But what if he exiles me? Or tortures me? What if he traumatizes me in his panther form?"
Horrid thoughts permeated my mind, and I shivered fearfully.
"Caspian's a good leader, and good leaders don't torture. You'll be fine. Exile is a possibility, but you do know what you've done is a major offense, right?"
I sighed. "Yes, I know. But even if I'm exiled, you'll stick by me, right?"
"Of course. You're my friend. I'll even teach you how to hunt. But, you need to tell Caspian, no matter what consequences may await you."
"Just give me a few minutes to rest. If you had raced after an incredibly quick eleven-year-old, you'd be tired too."
"Just keep watching. Who knows how quick they could get here."
"Alright."
I watched, but eventually, my mind strayed to other topics. My parents came to mind. Were they working with those people who were after me? What was that science group called? The what-Borne Science something? But they were coming for the community; I had to do something.
I flapped my wings, but then stopped. It took all the energy I had to move them just that little bit. Dang; I must've been going really fast.
"You were. How you managed to keep up with the boy going that fast astonishes me. But you need rest. That's what it looks like to me."
"But what about the community of shifters? Why can't I just heal and go?"
"You can heal wounds, not exhaustion. Just rest."
"Fine."
Sleep came surprisingly quick, and sunrise roused me from my slumber. I could hear screams coming from somewhere, and where they were coming from was quickly realized. The shifter town! Adrenaline rushed through my veins, and I leapt off of the tree branch. My flying was frantic, and I didn't give a crap how loud I was. Trinity, Casey, Caspian, Saige, all of the shifters were in danger!
When I got there, a horrid sight awaited me. The dead body of a cheetah was the first thing I saw. Then, all of the fighting. The body of a black panther was under a blazing tree. Caspian!
I looked, trying to see if he was still breathing. He was. But the crackling flames of the tree grew nearer. I dove towards him, trying to drag the large mass of panther. Smoke clouded the air, and I tried to stay as close to the ground as possible. Through the thick pollution, I could see glowing red light. Fire.
"Caspian," I shouted "Caspian wake up! The town needs you to lead them!"
He let out a cough, and attempted to lift his head. He was too injured to do so, and at that moment, I noticed a large gash that he was bleeding out of.
"How do I heal him? Ashlea, I need to know. He needs to lead them."
"Focus on the wound going away, focus on it healing at a super-accelerated rate."
I placed my hands on the bleeding wound, tuning out the sounds of the raging battle. Heal, I thought to myself, heal. He needs to heal. It's my fault that he's injured, and now, he needs to heal. I imagined the bloody wound closing, the probably horrid pain going away. As his wounds healed, I grew exhausted. But it was worth it when the wound healed.
Caspian looked at me, looked up, and the shouted "Run!"
I was confused, but I ran away. A net was dropped over him, and he was snarling, spitting profanities. They had captured him. I struggled to see through the flames, struggled to see who had thrown the net. I wouldn't let them hurt the shifter town!
A man clad in white, with a sneer upon his face, strolled in front of me.
"What a wonderful specimen. You will do great for my experiments in genetic testing."
I flew up. "I'm nobody's 'experiment.' And if you think you can capture me just like that; then you better go to a doctor and see what the heck is wrong with you."
"Sass is apparently a problem." I heard him mutter. I glared at him. "As well as defiance. But that can easily be fixed."
"Shut up idiot." I fired back.
I shifted my gaze back to the fighting. It was human versus animal, and the humans had weapons. They were winning. Some were dead, but others were caged. Trinity was in the air, taunting and kicking. Her leg was bloody, a bullet imbedded in it.
"Trinity!" I shouted, looking at the horrid scene below.
"Fight! We have to save them!"
"We're dead if we do! They're either dead or captured." I looked down at the battlefield to see Caspian with a catch pole around his neck.
"Let him go!" I shouted, and then noticed who had captured Caspian. It was that little boy. Speedy.
"Never, you mindless freak!"
I dove down, aiming for him. He caught me by my leg, and I struggled to get away.
"Don't fly away, specimen. Father will be pleased at me for catching you two specimen."
Then, a flash flew by, and Speedy lessened his grip. When the flash stopped, I saw it was Trinity.
"Thanks for saving me. But we need to go."
We both flew away, leaving the fiery battlefield. Leaving a leader, and friends. Leaving those who were like us.
