Chapter 12
What was I going to do? They were looking for us! The safety of the entire community was at stake! I stuffed my phone in my pocket, trying to get my focus off of the information.
But, I could not.
"Calm down, Madelyn."
"How am I supposed to be calm?"
"Just take breaths and go tell Caspian."
"Why would I tell Caspian? Do you know how much trouble I'd get in? Plus, he's most likely already expecting it. It's fine."
At that moment, Trinity walked in.
"Hi, Trinity." I greeted, sighing afterwards.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing." I lied, feeling guilty. But, it was my problem. I had gotten myself into this mess, and I didn't want Trinity getting worried.
"You sure?" she questioned "I'm your friend; you can talk to me if you need to."
"I'm gonna go fly, and then I'll tell you," I replied. Walking out of the cabin, I flew up. The sun was setting; a beautiful sight. Streaks of orange and yellow painted the sky, and I flew up more, watching the shifter city seem to shrink beneath me. I didn't know how I had stood it, being stuck on the ground all the time. Sure, I had only been a shifter for a few days, but flying; it's the best thing ever.
I flapped my wings, propelling myself trough the air. I wanted to stay here forever; escape harsh reality. Never have to see the people pursuing me, or my parents. My parents especially. They had kept so, so much from me. And then, I found out. They had attacked me. I continued flying, and I didn't know how long I had been flying. I wanted to escape the bad things that had happened so quickly.
So many things, both good and bad, had happened. Why had it happened to me? I kept on flying; not knowing where I was going. Eventually, I tired and landed on a branch, resting. It had become night, and it was hard to see in the darkness. But, I took comfort in the breezes and the thrill of being beneath the stars. I closed my eyes, trying to relax. A voice snapped me out of my relaxed state.
"Hey, winged-girl!"
I looked down, alarmed. There was a boy, around the age of eleven, staring up at me. I flapped my wings, flying away. He had seen me! What if he relayed that information to those groups in pursuit of me?
I pulled out my phone, silently praying that I still had service. Nope. Then, a slight bit. Quickly, I typed a message to Trinity.
'Meet me above the camp'
I sent the message and quickly flew to camp. I was exhausted, and I wanted nothing more than to rest. But I couldn't. Trinity; she was my best friend. She needed to know. Plus, she wouldn't punish me. Caspian might. Which is why I wasn't going to tell him, or anyone else, for that matter.
I was a coward. Putting my happiness first, instead of the safety of the shifters. Looking back, I shouldn't have done that. I regret it deeply.
Trinity was above the little village, and I flew up to her.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"I'll show you," I replied, and opened the news app. "Look."
Wait for it... wait for it....
"They know where we are!" she exclaimed.
"Shhh. I know that. But whatever you do, don't tell Caspian."
"Why shouldn't I? He needs to know!"
"But we'd get in so much trouble? And what if we were sentenced to death?"
"Now that's just stupid. He won't sentence you to death. Exile, possibly."
"Not. Helping."
"Sorry."
Trinity interrupted my conversation with Ashlea. "But he won't. He could've sentenced us to so much more when it first happened, but he didn't; he won't do it this time!"
"You don't know that! And plus, he probably suspected that this was going to happen in the first place! We don't need to tell him!"
"Yes," fired back Trinity "We do!"
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
"Yes."
"No." said Trinity, then realizing what I had done. "You tricked me, didn't you?"
"And it worked."
At that moment, I heard a voice coming from below us. It was the same boy from minutes ago. How the heck did he get here that quick? I dove down and started yelling at him.
"Get out of here! Don't tell anyone where we are, or so help me I will track you down and rip you limb from limb!"
Turns out, the little boy had sass. "One; I doubt you have enough strength in those light little arms of yours to 'rip me limb from limb'. And two, my father is the head of WellBorne Science Institute. He's been looking for you; so why wouldn't I tell? And after I tell, you'll be captured. Enjoy your freedom while it lasts, freaks."
And with that, the boy sped off at in-human speed. I raced after him, struggling to catch up. I couldn't lose this freedom; I wouldn't!
"Get... back here... you little... idiot!"
It was like someone had done something to him, and given him this intense speed. His father? Possibly. It was probable. Had they expected that I would try and stop them from giving this information? Most likely.
He was far ahead of me now, and I was flapping my wings as fast as I could. I needed to go faster! I had to! I could hardly see him through the vegetation, but I kept on flying. I was exhausted, but in my mind, it didn't matter. My freedom was much, much more important
Somehow, he wasn't tiring, and over his shoulder, he shouted "We will take everything from you. I've been watching for days. A community of shapeshifters is extrordinary. They'll be captured too. Just you wait."
Not Casey, or Caspian! Or Saige, or any of them! Especially not Caspian! It would break him down and kill him inside! Why must he do this?
"Please... don't." I pleaded, out of breath. "I beg of you!"
"You think I care about the feelings of someone like you? Freaks like yourself are pitiful. "
And with that, he sped away, leaving me there, hopeless.
A/N- Deep, deep trouble there! Amirite? And I saw someone say that I needed a bit more excitement, so here you go. Don't cry; you asked for more excitement and I merely gave it.
