Chapter 37.
"He's not here."
I sighed and sank down on the bed. His stuff was gone. He was gone. A piece of my heart ripped out of my chest. I felt my stomach turn.
"Richard. We need to find him."
"You're right. Me and George will drive around and see if we spot him anywhere."
I nodded and watched as they left. John sighed and sat on the bed with his head in his hands.
"I didn't mean for this to happen."
"Yeah well it did alright? He loves you John. But you just had to go off and rip his heart out of his chest!"
"I love Paul alright! I love him with all my heart! It's not my fault that he has to be so god damn dramatic about everything!"
"He just wants a normal relationship with someone that's all. But you act like it's going to kill you to change."
"Look Rosy. I didn't sign up for this alright? I love him yes. He just doesn't understand how I feel or what I want right now. What does he think I'm going to marry him and things are going to be perfect forever!?"
"Even if he does John, talk to him about it! Just don't assume that he knows your every thought."
"Be honest Rosy." He scoffed. "You're just like Paul. You think that once everything goes back to normal, things will stay the same like they are now. What did you think? That Richard is just going to leave Maureen for you!? Wake up Rosy! He already has a wife! He doesn't need you!"
"J...John." I stuttered.
"It's true! He has a life already. Money, fame, everything a man could want! He doesn't need his sorry poor ex girlfriend he knocked up! Face it Rosy, your nothing to him!"
We turned and noticed Richard standing in the doorway.
"Get out." Richard said to John.
"Wake up you two! All of you need to open your eyes and realise that you can't just run away from your problems and just expect everything to be perfect!"
He grabbed his coat. "I'm gonna look for Paul." He slammed the door behind him, leaving me and Richard alone. I sat on the bed. Richard sat next to me and looked down at his hands.
"Rosy..."
I shook my head. "Richard I..." I felt tears in my eyes as he wrapped his arms around me.
"He's wrong. I love you. I love you with all my heart."
"I know you do. I love you too Richard."
"He doesn't know what he's talking about. He's angry. That's just how he gets."
"I just can't help wondering if maybe...if things go back to normal..."
He rested his hand on my stomach. "I will always be here for you and our baby. I will never leave you."
"And I'll never leave you Richard." I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him softly.
"If things ever go back to the way they were, I'll find my way back to you." He whispered against my lips.
"Promise?"
"I promise." He smiled kissing me.
"Come on. Let's look for Paul."
We got up and made our way back out the door.
.....
(A few days later)
Richard took a drink from his coffee as George ate, sitting across from us. It was just us three. It reminded me of a few months ago when it was just us.
After John left that night, he never came back. Paul never showed. We eventually had to leave the motel.
"I hope they're alright." George said stirring his coffee.
"They are. Don't worry too much you two. They're adults."
"You're right. I just hope John doesn't do anything reckless. And I hope Paul doesn't get himself into any kind of trouble."
Richard nodded. "Yeah well, it's just us now."
We sat in silence and finished eating. George decided to drive with Richard in the passenger's seat. I looked at a map and told George which roads to take.
The more we drove south, the more emptier the roads were. Nothing but fields.
"Hey you two. Wasn't today the day you were going to play at that club?" I said looking at the newspaper clipping taped on the seat.
"Holy shit I forgot about that." George said.
"Maybe one of em are there? David's band was going to be there." Richard said looking at his watch.
"Let's go then." George said making a u turn.
