Chapter 10.
Richard's p.o.v
The first week of our adventure consisted of us goofing off and taking turns at the wheel. George would drive while I slept and Rosy would keep him company and so on. God knows what those two were on to. They seemed to get along really well. That made me happy. We stopped once in awhile to stretch and use the loo. It was only when we stopped at a gas station, that Rosy would use it though. I would use this opportunity to sneak in with her so we could have some alone time.
Me and George talked about the more recent music that we would listen to on the radio. I did like this Led Zeppelin band. They really caught George's attention. George fancied Jimi Hendrix. Especially his guitar skills. Rosy would go on about The Doors and sing along to their songs. There were a lot of bands I never heard of until now. That was mainly due to the fact that these bands didn't even exist in 1964. George went on about how American's were keeping these bands to themselves. We tried to stay away from listening to our own music. Things were just better that way.
I will admit there were times when I missed John and Paul's company. Those two were always together but John was always good to have around for a laugh.
It wasn't until Geo and Rosy were napping in the back that I realized how I could bring John and Paul along. I mean that first day on the road with Rosy, I was thinking about George and how much I missed him. I wished for him to come along with us. And sure enough, that same night, He appeared out of nowhere. But am I really ready to speak to John again? Could I trust him around Rosy? I trusted her but John was unpredictable. I shook these thoughts away and decided to pull over to rest. It was already seven in the evening when I lit a smoke and leaned against the hood of the VW. I enjoyed the peace and quiet. Just being able to stand here and not be chased by anyone. Not having to hide.
The clouds had dispersed by now and I watched the sun set and smiled to myself. The air never smelt nicer. There were a few cars that passed on the road as I rested. I stared at the sky and didn't break my gaze as I felt someone stand next to me.
"Beautiful isn't it?"
"Yeah Geo. It sure is. Smoke?"
"Ta."
I took one out of my pocket and handed it to him. He put it between his lips as I lit it. He inhaled and sighed.
"I can see why you love it here."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah. Freedom. Great music. This lifestyle is something I could get used to. Plus you got a beautiful girl to share it all with."
"And a great friend too." I said looking at him. "I'm glad your here George."
He smiled. "Me too Richard."
We finished our smoke and got back into the VW. Rosy was already sitting up when we got in. George took the drivers seat as we headed off.
"Hey Rosy, where are we?" George asked looking ahead at the road.
"Uh let me check." She grabbed a map and looked it over.
"We should be entering Arizona in three, two, one."
Sure enough there was a sign that read, Welcome to Arizona. She smiled looking proud of herself. She leaned over to me as I took her face into my hands and kissed her.
"Getting a little hungry here." George interrupted biting his lip.
"Yeah me too." I rubbed my stomach and looked around to see if there were any signs.
"There's a small restaurant just down the road here." She shrugged.
Me and George looked at each other and nodded.
"Alright sounds good."
We drove until we came across it. There had to be three or four cars parked out front. I can tell this was just a spot people came to when they were out on the road. I grabbed Rosy's hand as we walked in. George looked a little annoyed when he saw this. A waitress came up to us as we sat at a small table. She seemed to take a shining to George.
"Why hello there." She smiled and giggled. Me and Rosy just looked at each other.
"Hello there." George nodded at her. Usually he would've taken an interest in a bird trying to flirt with him. But he seemed to be acting odd. She was attractive I will admit. She didn't seem to notice him trying to brush her off.
"What can I get you?" She asked. Once again only to George.
"Uh, well I'd like the spaghetti with a salad. And...." Rosy said interrupting the waitress who was looking at Geo.
"I didn't ask you yet." She turned glaring at Rosy. If looks could kill.
"Hey don't talk to her that way." George said unexpectedly to the waitress who seemed to be taken back by his tone of voice. In fact we all were.
"George?" I asked looking at him.
"Excuse me." He said standing up and walking to the lavatory. I looked at Rosy.
"I'll be back." I told her and followed after George.
George was standing in front of a mirror hovering over a sink when I walked in. He turned and saw me and walked into one of the stalls. I walked over to him and knocked on the door.
"George what's the matter?"
"I don't want to talk about it Richard. leave me alone."
"George." I said knocking again. I heard him sigh.
"I think I like her." He blurted out.
I stood still and blinked. "Who?"
I knew the answer. I just wanted to hear him say it. I bit the inside of my cheek.
"Rosy."
He opened the door and looked at me. We just stared at each other until I broke the silence.
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know. I just...spending time with her this week and getting to know her. She's so beautiful and sweet and wonderful."
I stood there not knowing what to say. My best mate liking my girlfriend? Am I hurt? Or angry? Strangely no. He went on.
"I know she loves you. I can see it in her eyes. But I just cant help myself from wanting her. Maybe it's just lust. I don't know."
He looked down and shook his head. "I'm sorry."
I sighed and put a hand on his shoulder. "George. I'm not mad."
He looked at me. "Really?"
"Yeah. I mean I could never be mad at you. I just.... I'm just trying to take all this in."
It stayed quiet for a few minutes until we heard someone open the door. It was Rosy.
"You two alright?" She said walking over to us.
"How did you get in here?" I asked.
"It's a unisex restroom."
"Oh."
"Well? Is everything alright? George?"
We all just stood there looking at one another. George sighed and looked at her.
"Rosy I like you." He said scratching the back of his head. Rosy just blinked and looked at me. I just shrugged.
"Oh. So...so what? I mean it's not the end of the world. I like you too Georgie." She said walking over to him. I just watched as she took his face into her hands and kissed him on the lips. She pulled back and turned on her heel and headed for the door. "You're guy's food is gonna get cold."
And with that, she walked out. I just laughed and shook my head.
"Well. That was...something else. Come on lets eat."
George just looked embarrased and walked with me out the door back to our table.
