Chapter 8 | Secrets
"Welcome back from the dead," I laugh as Stephen and my adoptive parents step through the doorway. I smile as I bring Stephen into a hug, not caring that he was struggling to get out of my grasp.
"Have you gotten fatter?" Stephen says, causing me to let him go. I scoff as I slap his arm, watching him as he laughed to himself.
"It's only been two days," I say, placing my hand on my hip. "I couldn't have gained that much weight in two days."
Stephen raises an eyebrow, about to make another comment before Vanesa walks forward and gives me a hug. "It's nice to finally be home. That hospital was about to drive me mad."
I laugh before I go hug Zach, noticing that he had a cast around his wrist. He pulls me in before letting me go, his eyes scanning the house. "I'm surprised you actually kept this place clean."
I look around the house, remembering the cleaning frenzy I was in only a few minutes ago. I smile deviously as I glance at the floor, seeing a piece of popcorn from last night. I walk forward and stand on it, hiding it from Vanesa and Zach. "Yeah. It wasn't that hard."
My adoptive parents walk to their room as Stephen does as well, myself following him up the stairs. He turns and walks to his room as I go to mine, ready to work on the homework I got at school today. Today was a very weird day at school. We were under lock down because some guy named Barrow was loose in the school, or so they thought. I noticed that Scott and his little friends were running around half of the time, doing something that I could care less about.
Stiles and I talked a little bit today, mostly about last night. We didn't exactly mention the kiss, but Stiles was hinting towards the topic. I didn't give in however; mostly because I didn't want to talk about being in a relationship right now. Yes, I like Stiles a lot. But too many things are going on right now that I need to focus on, like homework and keeping the fact that werewolves exist from Stephen.
I flop onto my bed, staring out of my window. I look across the street to see Scott walk out of his house, his helmet in hand. He was dressed in some decent clothing; a nice polo shirt and some jeans. He walks to his bike before getting on, driving off down the street. I wonder where he's headed off to.
I sigh as I lean up against my pillow, grabbing my bag that was leaning up against the side of my bed. I reach into it and pull out my calculous homework, my mind already groaning. I stare at the white sheet of paper before I give up, deciding to just copy Kira or something tomorrow. She always has the right answers.
I pull out my phone and pull up snapchat, seeing that I had a message from Kira. My finger presses the red button on the screen, showing me a picture of Kira. Her hair was pulled up in a messy bun and she was wearing a loose shirt. I read the line across the photo, it saying "Want to come over for dinner tonight?"
I set my homework sheet to the side as I pull up the camera, about to snap a photo of me before I stop. I stare at myself in the photo, something looking as if it was radiating around me. It was a strange red and yellow light, flickering around my head. I close my eyes and count to three, thinking that I was just seeing things. I open my eyes again and look at the photo, seeing that it was no longer there.
I sigh before snapping a quick photo, replying with "Sure. What time?" Kira replies in a snap saying "In like 10 minutes?"
I widen my eyes as I look down at myself, seeing that I was already practically ready. I take another quick photo, telling her that that was fine. I jump up from my bed and grab my black jacket and my lime green and gray shoes before walking out of the doorway, stopping as Stephen stepped in front of me.
"Where are you going?" Stephen asks, furrowing his eyebrows.
I lick my lips. "I'm going to Kira's house to have dinner."
Stephen nods, looking as if he had something on his mind. "Oh, okay. I was going to talk to you but-"
"What?" I say, applying all of my pressure onto one leg. "I've got time."
Stephen looks around the hall before he gently pushes me back into my room, shutting the door behind him. This makes me very curious now because he's never done anything like this before. Well, he's never really wanted to talk to me before period.
Stephen seems flustered. "I-I wanted to talk to you about that night. The night we got in the wreck."
My heart pounds faster. "What about it?"
He looks at the ground, his eyes narrowing. "I saw some things-and I didn't know if maybe you did too."
I gulp, trying my best to sound calm. "What do you mean? What did you see?"
He shakes his head. "Well, I saw that it was a person that ran us off the road, not an animal. You saw that, right?"
I think wisely before nodding my head. "Yeah, I saw it."
He steps closer to me. "Who was it? Who would want to run us off of the side of the road?"
I shake my head, putting my hands up. "I don't know Stephen, but it doesn't matter anymore-"
"Yes it does!" Stephen almost yells. "They could have killed us. They could have killed all of us."
I let out a shakey breath. "But they didn't. That's what matters."
Stephen grabs the door handle. "It does matter, and I'm not going to let someone get away with something like that."
I step forward, almost desperate now to calm him down. "Stephen, listen to me. What happened, happened. You just need to let it go-"
Stephen shakes his head. "How can you let something like that go? They could have killed us."
I reach out for him as he starts to walk out of my room. "But they didn't-"
"This isn't like you," Stephen says, staring down at me. "You're hiding something, aren't you?"
I widen my eyes, fear rising in me. "I'm not hiding anything-"
Stephen backs out of my room, furrowing his eyebrows. "You're hiding something, and I'm going to figure it out."
I walk after Stephen, worried more than ever now. "Stephen, I'm not hiding anything-"
I get cut off as Stephen shuts the door, leaving me standing alone in the hallway. I fight back tears as I stare at the door, debating whether or not to go in and talk to him about it. I decided against it since he clearly didn't want to talk and I needed to get to Kira's soon. I'll talk to him about it when he's thinking clearly.
I lick my lips slowly before turning and walking down the stairs, slipping my black jacket on over my arms. I hear Vanesa and Zach call after me, wondering where I was going, but I don't answer. I was in too bad of a mood to exactly talk to anyone. Only person I felt like seeing right now was Kira; which I'm glad she invited me over tonight.
I walk to my car before getting in, starting the engine. I pull out of our drive way and head towards Kira's house, glancing down at my phone every now and then to check the address. As I drove along, I started to debate what to do with Stephen. Should I tell him so he won't get hurt in the end? Or should I not to protect him? I didn't know what to do.
Before I know it, I'm at Kira's house, which was probably one of the nicest homes I've ever seen. It was a beautiful single story house that had beautiful plants around. I stared in awe before I parked my car, getting out and walking to the door. I don't even have to ring the door bell before Kira is opening the door, dragging me inside.
She seemed to be in a hurry as she dragged me through the house. "What are you doing?"
She pulls me into a room; her room. "You're going to give me a make-over."
I widen my eyes. "Excuse me?"
She turns towards me, her eyes wide. "You're not the only one coming over for dinner tonight. Scott is too, and I need to look good. Only person I knew to call was you."
I smile at her, trying not to think about Scott. "So you're acting as if this is a date?"
She nods. "Yeah, but not too fancy. Casual, yet looks like I tried."
She walks over to her closet, opening it up for me to see. I widen my eyes as I scan her clothes, seeing a bunch of T-shirts and casual shirts. I smile as I grab a shirt, holding it up to the light. It was a pretty red top that I knew would look good on Kira.
I turn towards her, grinning. "Alright, let's get to work."

I hear the door bell ring, Kira's face conforming into nerves. I finish curling one last piece of hair before she looks in the mirror, smiling. "Did I do a good job?"
Kira nods, her eyes blinking rapidly. "I knew I called the right person."
I smile as she turns and gives me a hug, her curly hair tickling my nose. "Kira! Scott is here," I hear Mr. Yukimura call from the other room. Kira pulls back and smiles at me before we both exit the bathroom, heading towards the kitchen.
My heart pounds as Scott comes into view, his face softening when he sees Kira. He smiles as Kira does as well, both of them falling more for one another with each passing second. "You-uh, you look nice Kira."
Kira smiles and nods. "Thanks."
Mr. Yukimura lets Scott inside as we all head to the dinner table, myself feeling a little out of place. I mean, Kira had her eyes on Scott while her parents were watching. I was just the friend that had no clue why she was here.
"Thank you both for coming," Mr. Yukimura says as we all sit down at the table. "I'm very thankful that you both helped my daughter with that coyote."
Scott and I nod, realizing that this is what this was all about. I look up to see Mrs. Yukimura walking in with a tray, what appeared to be sushi sitting on top. I widen my eyes, nervous about eating raw fish. I've never had it before, and it sounded a little odd to me. I'm more of a pizza and chips girl.
"Dad, you really had to make sushi?" Kira says as Mrs. Yukimura sets the tray down on the table.
Her father sighs. "I knew I shouldn't have-"
"No, no," I say, trying to make him feel better. "It's fine. I've always wanted to try sushi."
Mr. Yukimura smiles at this as he reaches forward with chop sticks, taking a piece of sushi. I look down at my plate, seeing a pair of chops stick sitting there as well. I gulp before picking the utensil up, trying to figure out how to hold it. I look up and watch as Kira shows Scott how to hold it, myself figuring it out by her demonstration. It wasn't that hard when I figured it out.
I reach forward and take a piece of sushi, setting into onto my plate. My stomach flops as I stare at the raw fish; already knowing that I would be having some digestive problems later tonight. I pick up the piece of fish before placing it into my mouth, the raw fish texture making me want to vomitt. I put a fake smile on my face as I chew slowly, swallowing it in one gulp.
"That was very, um, flavorful," I say, not trying to sound rude. Mr. Yukimura nods his head as if he believed I liked it, but Kira just laughs at me. She could read my fake expression.
The rest of the meal was pretty boring for the most part. I basically sat back and watched everyone else eat and talk. I made up an excuse that I couldn't eat very much because I was allergic to fish, which was a perk. Scott seemed to think that the sushi was terrible as well; I could only tell because he had a fake expression as well.
After the meal was over, it was time for Scott and I to leave. Kira followed us both out as we headed to our vehicles, which were parked on the side of the road. We all stood in a little group, Kira saying her goodbyes.
"Thanks for coming tonight," she says to both of us. "I apologize for the sushi."
I laugh. "It was fine. It was very interesting to eat."
Scott nods with me. "You can say that again."
I smile as Scott gets on his dirt bike, about to put his helmet on. "I guess I'll see you two later."
We both nod as Scott looks at Kira, showing how much he was glad that he came tonight. I felt like a proud mother for some reason; maybe because I was the one to doll up Kira. Yeah, that's what it had to be.
Scott starts to put on his helmet before I see someone come running up behind him, what seemed to be a crowbar in their hand. I don't have time to act as the person slams it across Scott's head, knocking him out cold.
I scream as the person turns towards Kira and I, the crowbar now bloody. The person had a mental, messed up in the head, look to them. I looked down at his clothes and saw that he had blood seeping through his shirt where his stomach is. I then realized that it was Barrow.
"I found you," he breathes while lifting the crow bar up. I tried to run, but my legs weren't working. "I found the kids with the glowing eyes."
I don't have time to scream before the next thing I knew, the crow bar was coming straight for my head.
