Chapter 17 | Chasing Tails
"Oh my God," I breathe before we're all running over towards the crowd, our hearts racing in our chests. I push my way through as Stephen follows right behind me, curious as to what exactly happened. I widen my eyes when I see Coach now lying on the ground, Scott and Stiles right at his side.
"Stiles?" I say, furrowing my eyebrows. Where did he come from?
"Coach, calm down-" Scott says before Coach cuts him off.
"Calm down? You want me to calm down?" He blares, shaking his head and starting at the arrow. "There's a freaking arrow through my stomach and you want me to calm down!"
Stiles wraps his hands around Coach's wound as blood seeps through his shirt. He stares at the arrow for a moment before looking up at me, his eyes frozen on my face. Something looked like it clicked behind his eyes before it was gone in an instant.
"Coach, you're going to be fine-"
"I'm going to die!" Coach yells, shaking and kicking. "Oh my God, I'm going to die!"
I shake my head before I see Aiden step out from the crowd, looking down at Coach before back at us. "Back away! Give him some room!"
Everyone starts to back away as I stay put, Aiden turning and raising an eyebrow. I give him a pathetic look before I walk around him, kneeling down beside Stiles and Coach.
"What happened?" I ask as Stiles shakes his head. "Where have you been for the past two days?"
Stiles flusters. "That doesn't matter right now. What matters is th-that I almost killed him."
I look back down at Coach, who's eyes were now closed. "You did this?"
Stiles nods stiffly. "Yeah-no-I mean, the nogitsune did this. I can't exactly remember."
I furrow my eyebrows as Scott takes Coach's hand. "I think he just passed out."
Stiles pulls his hands away as he stares at the blood on them, shaking. "I-I almost killed him. What if it had been his head or throat?"
"But it wasn't," Scott assures, looking up at his friend. "Stiles, he's going to be okay."
I hear something off in the distance before Aiden looks up as well, hearing the same thing. "I hear an ambulance coming."
Stiles nods as tears form in his eyes, staring at the arrow. I reach across and place my hand on his hand, looking him in the eyes. "Stiles, everything is going to be alright."
He nods firmly before I see Scott take some of Coach's pain, Stiles watching closely. I sigh a breath of relief before I look over my shoulder, seeing Stephen and Kira watching from a distance. I nod my head at them as they stare at Coach with wide eyes, wondering if he was going to make it.
Before long, the ambulance arrived and everything calmed down. Stiles reunited with his father and the paramedics said that Coach would be okay. I told Stephen and Kira what exactly happened, leaving a few details out when I told Stephen; details like the fact that there was a nogitsune possessing the boy I had a crush on. But I told Stephen to head on home without me since I was going to stay with Scott and Stiles, which was the first thing I've told him today that wasn't a lie.
"Hey Scott," I hear Ethan say behind me. "Come check this out."
I turn around and see Ethan rummaging in one of Stiles' bags, holding up a roll of wrapping paper. Scott furrows his eyebrows before he walks over, myself following after him slowly. I was curious as to what Ethan wanted Scott for; especially since it involved Stiles.
"Isn't this the same wrapping paper you used on the prank for Coach?" Ethan says, holding out the wrapping paper.
Scott nods. "What about it?"
Ethan pulls out a box from the bag. "Wasn't wrapping paper and bolts Barrow's thing?"
Scott nods his head before his face goes white. "A bomb. Ethan-there's a bomb at the school."
-----
Stiles and Scott stand beside me as I stare at the bus; watching a police officer step onto it and walk to the back. My heart races as he walks to the kid in the back, who's name was Jarod, as he kneels beside him and talks to him. You see, the bomb was on this kids lap wrapped as a present and he was told that if he moved, they would all be blown to pieces. That is why the police officer was on it now trying to see if it was in fact a bomb.
"What's going on?" I ask, trying to stand on my tippy toes to see the police officer.
Scott's eyes flash red for a moment before turning back to their chocolate brown. "He's just talking to Jarod. He's trying to calm him down."
Stiles rubs his hands together. "This is all my fault, Scott. They both might be blown to pieces and it's all because of me."
"Stiles," I say, turning towards him. "This isn't your fault. We already established that this was all the nogitsune, not you."
Stiles nods but looks unwilling. "But the nogitsune is me now."
A blaring siren went off in my head when he says this, mostly because it didn't sound like something Stiles would say. However, I shrug it off and place my hands on his shoulders.
"No he's not, and he won't ever be," I say as Stiles nods, finally understanding what I was saying. Scott looks back at the bus before I feel someone touch my shoulder, causing me to turn around and see Kira standing there.
"What's going on?" she asks, looking over at the buses.
I lick my lips. "They think there's a bomb."
Kira widens her eyes. "What? A bomb? I thought Barrow was dead."
I shake my head. "Barrow wasn't the one to build it..."
Before I can finish my sentence, Kira glances at Stiles, knowing who I was talking about. She nods before she looks back towards the school, her heart racing in her chest.
"I bet my dad knows more about this," she says. "Maybe he knows something else about the nogitsune that we don't know yet too; since he is married to the woman who knows all about kitsunes."
I nod my head. "I'll come with you."
Kira nods before I turn back to Scott and Stiles, glancing up at the bus quickly as well. "I'm going with Kira. I'll be right back."
They both nod before Kira and I push our way thorough the crowd, heading towards the school. It doesn't take us long to reach the doors, pushing them open and hearing the deadly silence in the school halls. There was only a faint sound of two people talking coming from a room; most likely being Mr. Yukimura.
"Come on," Kira says before she heads down the hall, myself following close behind. Kira reaches for the door handle before she pulls back, moving away from the door. I widen my eyes as she holds me back, holding up a finger telling me to be quiet. I slowly nod before we both creep back to the door, peeking inside the glass.
Inside was Mr. Yukimura and Noshiko, both of them speaking. I couldn't hear them before I focused on their mouths, hearing them speak as if they were standing right next to me. I could tell Kira was listening as well, since she was focused on each of their faces.
"You hid them in a book?" Noshiko says as Mr. Yukimura walks over to a book shelf, pulling out a Geography text book. "Shouldn't you have hidden them in a safer place?"
Mr. Yukimura raises an eyebrow. "How many students do you know that would willingly open a book?"
Noshiko nods in agreement as he walks over to her, placing the book on the desk. I watch closely as Noshiko opens the book up slowly, revealing a few objects placed inside that looked similar to knives.
"Only nine left," Mr. Yukimura breathes, staring at them. "Are you sure you want to do this?"
Noshiko nods. "I have to do this. I've already sacrificed five of the tails for the Oni and three of them are now gone."
"How many are you willing to sacrifice?" Mr. Yukimura says, looking up at his wife. Noshiko sighs before lifting one of the knives up, staring at it.
"If I have to, all of them," she says before snapping the knife in half. I blink as she does this; a bright blue light shining from it. Noshiko winces before closing her eyes, setting the broken blade down on the desk. Kira and I glance at one another before Noshiko snaps another blade, another light flashing from it.
"These Oni will be stronger now," Noshiko says before closing the book again, staring at the broken blades. I didn't fully understand what tails were, but I did know that if they were for the Oni, then it wasn't good. The Oni were going to come for Stiles.
Tonight.
"We have to warn Stiles and Scott," I say as I step away from the door, turning towards the doors at the end of the hall.
"Sarah, wait-" Kira says before I stop, turning and looking at her.
I furrow my eyebrows. "What?"
Kira starts to say something, but cuts off after doing so. She looks hesitant for a moment before she nods her head, taking a step towards me. "Come on, lets go."
I nod my head before I'm turning and walking out the doors, heading back to the buses. I widen my eyes when I see the police men running around on their phones; looking as if something terrible had just happened.
I run over to Scott and Stiles. "What's going on?"
Scott's eyes dart around before they land back on me. "There wasn't a bomb on the bus. It's at the police station."
I widen my eyes. "What?"
Scott nods. "Yeah, we need to get over there. Now."
I nod my head before following after Scott, Stiles right as his side. Kira follows close behind me as we head towards Stiles' jeep, which was parked among all of the other cop cars. We almost reached the jeep before I feel my phones buzz, pulling it out and seeing that it was Stephen calling me.
"Hello?" I say, shaking my head.
"Sarah," Stephen breathes, causing me to sigh.
"Right now isn't really the best time," I say, walking closely behind Kira.
Stephen takes a deep breath. "This is something you want to hear, trust me."
My heart races. "What is it?"
"Remember that blood I found on the road from when we wrecked that night?" he says, causing me to stop in my place. "Well, I just took it to the station for evidence. We can figure out who almost killed us."
I shake my head, ignoring the part about the blood. "Stephen, w-where are you?"
Stephen pauses for a moment as I hear random noises in the background. "What? Why?"
"Just tell me where you are!" I scream into the phone, causing Scott, Stiles, and Kira to stop and look at me. My blood runs cold as he pauses, speaking into the phone quickly.
"I'm at the Sheriff's station."
