Chapter 15 | Latch
"Anything?" I ask as we drive down the street, Scott sticking his head out of the window. He sniffs the air before looking back at me, shaking his head.
"Nothing," he says before sticking his head back out, smelling for a scent of Stiles.
Isaac sighs from the back seat. "This is hopeless."
"No it's not," I say, looking back at him. "It's better than waiting around for Lydia to get a sign or something."
Isaac shrugs. "Well, it could be more useful than trying to smell Stiles from the road. He said he was in a basement, not outside."
I was about to argue with Isaac again before Scott wrinkles his nose up. "I smell something."
"What is it?" I ask desperately, taking my eyes off of the road for a minute, causing me to swerve slightly.
Scott shakes his head while holding onto the side of the car. "I'm not sure, but it's burning my eyes."
I slam on the breaks after I hear Scott say this. Everyone flies forward as I grip the steering wheel, holding my breath as the car skidded to a halt. Isaac takes deep breaths as the car stops, turning and yelling at me.
"What in the hell are you doing?" he shouts, but I ignore him. I jump out of the car as Scott follows after me, chasing me as I started to run into the woods, the smell coming across my nostrils. Scott was right; it was burning my eyes.
"Sarah!" Scott shouts from behind me. "Where are you going?"
"Stiles said he smelled something that made his eyes burn," I say, dodging the trees as I ran. "He has to be around here!"
I hear Scott start to run faster as I do as well, but I managed to be faster than him. I don't know how I was, but I managed to get far enough ahead that I couldn't hear his feet crunching the leaves under his feet anymore. I glance over my shoulder quickly, not seeing him through the darkness, but I press on.
I had to find Stiles.
My heart races in my chest as the scent gets stronger, causing my eyes to water from how much it burned. Whatever the hell the smell was, it made me want to puke. I almost smelled like a bug spray, but it was way stronger than that. It was like a person dumped about 20 cans of bug spray.
I run along before I stop in my tracks. In front of me was some type of huge tree stump that I vaguely remember Scott telling me about. I didn't know much about it, but it didn't matter at the moment. What mattered was what lied beside it.
Stiles.
A part of me is relieved that I found him as I run over to him, but when I reach him, I realize how bad of a situation he was in right now. I wrap my arms around him before shaking him, feeling how deathly cold he was.
"Stiles!" I scream at him. I needed him to wake up. "Stiles, come on!"
Stiles mumbles something before he bursts to life in my arms. I jump before he lets out a blood curdling scream, chilling me to the core. He grips onto my arms as he cries out, tears falling down his cheeks as well.
"Wait!" he screams, but it's hard to understand. "Please stop!"
"Stiles!" I scream as he struggles in my grasp. He lets out another scream before he turns and looks at me, seeing that it was me holding him. He calms down slightly before I take a deep breath. "Stiles, you're okay."
Stiles lets out a sob before lying back down in my arms, his chest heaving inwards and outwards. I let out a breath of relief before Scott comes running out of the woods, his eyes landing on Stiles and I. I look up at him before Stiles buries his head into my arm, soft sobs escaping his throat.
"I thought he was going to get me," Stiles says, shaking his head. "I thought he was going to kill me."
Scott walks over carefully, placing his hand on Stiles' shoulder. "Who was going to get you, Stiles?"
Stiles looks up from my arm, scanning Scott up and down before shaking his head, still terrified about whatever he saw or dreamt about. Stiles lets out a shaky breath before speaking lowly, sending chills throughout my body.
"The gauze man."

"How do I even pronounce this?" the doctor says, looking up from his clip board.
Sheriff Stilinski crosses his arms. "Just call him Stiles."
The doctor nods before looking back down at his clipboard, checking a few things off of it. I watch him closely before I look up at Stiles, seeing him dazed off as he sat on the edge of the MRI machine. I notice Scott staring at the floor before the doctor looks up and talks to Stiles.
"So this will take an hour to do," he says as Stiles looks up sadly. "The machine also makes a loud sound, almost like a hammer hitting an anvil, but you're welcome to have a pair of headphones-"
"No, I'm fine," Stiles says, sadness behind his eyes. My heart sinks before Stiles' dad steps forward.
"We're only just behind that glass," he says while pointing towards the window. "We'll be here."
Stiles doesn't say anything as he pats his father's arm, showing that he'd be fine. The Sheriff nods before him, Melissa, and the doctor walk into the room behind the window. Scott and I turn to Stiles before he looks up at us.
"You know what they're looking for, right?" Stiles says, his eyes flicking between Scott and I. "It's called frontotemporal dementia. It causes areas of your brain to shrink. It's what my mother had."
As soon as he says this, I knew what was going to come next. Tears well in my eyes as I look over at Scott, seeing that he was tearing up as well. Stiles takes a deep, shaky breath before speaking again.
"It's the only form of dementia that can hit teenagers. And there's no cure." I lick my lips as a tear falls down my cheek, trying to imagine Stiles actually being sick. He could die, just like the way his mother did.
"Stiles, if you have it, we'll do something," Scott pauses while glancing over at me. "I'll do something."
Stiles' face softens as the two pull into a hug, tears falling down Stiles' cheeks. My heart sinks as I see the two of them, realizing how good of friends they really were. Scott wouldn't dare lose his best friend.
They pull apart before Scott stares at Stiles for a moment, turning and walking out of the room. Stiles and I watch him leave for a moment before I turn back to him, shaking my head.
"Stiles, I-" I start to say before he cuts me off, wiping away a few tears.
"Thanks for finding me," he says, nodding solemnly. "I would have died out there if you wouldn't have."
I smile faintly for a moment. "It was no problem. I kind of knew after you said you smelled something terrible."
Stiles shakes his head. "No, I meant I would have had hypothermia. When you picked me up, you were hot. Like you were on fire."
I furrow my eyebrows for a moment. "Wait, so you're saying I kept you warm?"
Stiles nods, smiling a little. "Yeah. If you wouldn't have, I probably wouldn't be here right now."
I smile and nod as he stares at me. "It was no problem-"
"Sarah?" Stiles says as I look up, staring into his amber eyes. "Can you do me a favor?"
I nod my head. "Anything."
Stiles nods before his face goes serious. "If something happens-if I do something-can you promise me that you'll do the right thing?"
I shake my head. "What do you mean Stiles?"
He licks his lips. "I mean, just promise me that you'll do what's right. That you'll protect everyone; including yourself."
I nod my head stiffly, not understanding what he meant. "I-I don't understand-"
"You will later," Stiles says, sounding as if he already knew what was supposed to be happening. I furrow my eyebrows before I hear the doctor speak into a microphone.
"We should probably get started Stiles," he says before Stiles nods, looking out the window at his father. He starts to lie down in the MRI bed before I step forward and take his hand, causing his eyes to flick up at me.
"Everything is going to be okay," I say, smiling at him. Stiles smiles ever so slightly before he nods, the MRI machine starting to pull him inside. I slowly let go of his hand before I watch him disappear inside of the machine. My heart races in my chest as I turn and walk out of the room, not being able to stay and wait for the results. I needed something to keep my mind off of it.
I turn and head towards the hospital cafeteria, deciding to go eat away my feelings. That was what I always seemed to do when I was stressed. Ice cream was always my favorite.
I start to walk towards the cafeteria before I look out of the entrance doors, seeing Kira standing there. She had her arms crossed and was leaning up against a black jeep. What was she doing here?
I furrow my eyebrows as I walk towards the doors, them opening automatically. Kira looks up as she sees me walk over, pushing herself up off the jeep.
"What are you doing here?" I ask as I stand in front of her.
She sighs. "I'm here with Derek."
"Derek?" I ask, confused as to why she was here with him. "Why Derek?"
Kira shakes her head. "He figured out some things about what happened the other night..."
"What do you mean?" I ask, trying to pry the information out of her.
Kira looks back up at me. "Well, the night when Barrow kidnapped us, Derek thinks that he used me to create foxfire."
"The internet browser?" I say, Kira groaning.
"No you stupid," she says. "That's firefox. Foxfire is that thing I was telling you about where foxes rub their tails together."
I nod. "Oh yeah I remember. What about it though?"
Kira seems hesitant to tell me this next part. "Well, he thinks that I used it to jumpstart something inside Stiles."
This interests me even more. "Jumpstart what?"
Kira sulks a little. "The nogitsune."
I widen my eyes. "Are you kidding me? You jumpstarted the nogitsune inside of Stiles!"
Kira nods, obviously feeling terrible about what she did. "Yeah..."
I sigh before running my fingers through my hair. "It's not your fault. It was an accident."
"But I still did it," Kira says, shaking her head. "I allowed a spirit to possess Stiles."
I sigh before looking back up at Kira. "We need to go tell Scott and everyone else."
Kira nods before I turn around, determined to go tell everyone what was going on. However, when I turned around, I was met with something else that made my heart race.
It was a live wire, heading straight for Kira and I.
