Chapter 12 | Fairy Tales

"Thanks for coming with me," Stiles says as we walk through the hospital, which seemed to be almost empty. I scanned the faces of the nurses as we walked along, trying not to remind myself of what happened here not too long ago. It felt like ages since we got into that car wreck and when the oni came after me.

"It's no problem," I say, licking my lips and blinking rapidly.

Stiles stops and looks down for a moment. "So, you don't like hospitals I take it?"

I furrow my eyebrows and turn to face him. "Why do you say that-"

I stop short when I look down and see that my hand was grasping Stiles'; completely on accident. I must have been too focused on not thinking about the Oni to notice that I had taken his hand. I pull my hand away quickly as I start to blush, not believing that I just did that.

Stiles gives me a weak smile, but I can tell it's only because of how tired he was. He looked like he was about to say something before a woman walks over to us; one that was very familiar to me by now.

"Stiles? Sarah?" I hear the woman ask, who was Melissa McCall. "What are you two doing here?"

"I'm here with Stiles," I say, licking my lips once again. "He's here to see a doctor."

Melissa seems worried as she turns to Stiles. "What's wrong?"

Stiles steps forward, rubbing his two hands together. "I-I'm not sure. I haven't been feeling like myself lately..."

Melissa takes a long look at him before she's walking back to a counter, motioning us to follow. We do so as she walks around it and scans a few folders and files before she looks back up at us, her eyes sad.

"I'm afraid that Dr. Gardner isn't going to be here all week," she says shaking her head. "Would you like to wait for one of the urgent care doctors?"

Stiles looks as if he got really dizzy as he backs away from the desk, causing my hands to go up to his side. I help him keep his balance as he stares at me blankly, silently thanking me for helping him. I help him stand up straight again before he grabs the side of the counter, using it to keep his balance.

"Sitles, are you alright?" Melissa asks, now back around the counter.

Stiles shakes his head, the bags under his eyes seeming to get darker by the minute. "I-I don't know."

Melissa looks at me before she wraps her arm around Stiles', having him lean up against her. The two of them walk down the hall a little ways before walking into a room, me following close behind. I watch with a sad heart as Melissa lets go of Stiles, allowing him to sit on the side of the bed in the room.

I bring my hand to my mouth as I look at Stiles, noticing that tears were starting to form in his eyes. What I didn't understand was that I actually felt sincere about being upset. I barely knew Stiles yet I knew that if anything were to happen to him, I would lose it.

"What are some of your symptoms?" Melissa asks as she pulls out a clipboard, jotting down a few notes.

Stiles stares at the floor. "Blackouts, but not for that long. Sleepwalking, which I used to do a lot as a kid. Also having some really bad anxiety, which lead to most of my panic attacks. Oh—and I temporaraly lost the ability to read, but that might have had more to do with the giant magic tree and the sacrifice thing."

Earlier, I didn't know what in the world they were talking about when they talked about the sacrifices and the tree called the "nemeton", but Scott finally got me caught up to date earlier today at school. It really touched me that the three of them would die for their own parents; even if that meant them having these effects from it.

If I could have done something like that for my mother, I would have taken it in a heart beat.

Melissa jots down a few things before looking up. "How many hours of sleep are you getting?"

Stiles stares at the floor as he messes with his fingers, looking as if he's counting. "Eight."

"Eight hours a night?" I say, not believing it from the bags under his eyes.

Stiles shakes his head. "No, eight hours in the past three days."

Melissa and I share a look before she turns back to Stiles. "Are you feeling irritable?"

"Probably to the point of homecide," Stiles says, licking his lips slowly.

"In the abilty to focus?" Melissa asks.

Stiles shakes his head. "No, the Adderall's not working."

I take a deep breath before Melissa asks another question. "Are you feeling impulsive?"

"It's hard to tell if it's worse than usual," Stiles says, causing me to shake my head.

Melissa looks at me again before back at Stiles. "What about the vivid dreams during the day?"

"Won't go away," Stiles says quickly, not taking any time to answer this question. I gulp before Melissa sets the clipboard down and grabs something from a table, which I now saw was a needle. I cross my arms and furrow my eyebrows as she walks over to Stiles with it, sticking it into his arm.

"What was that?" Stiles asks as his eyes begin to droop.

"Medazolam," she says as Stiles starts to fall to the side. "It's a sedative. You need sleep Stiles...bad."

Stiles nods his head lazily as Melissa lays Stiles back into the bed, bringing the covers up over him. I smile to myself as I walk over to the side of the bed, watching as Stiles nuzzled around under the covers. He looked happy to be honest.

"You don't have to stay, Sarah," Stiles says in mid yawn. "I'll be fine."

I nod my head as I pat his hand, not planning on leaving in the first place. "Okay Stiles."

Melissa smiles up at me before turning back to Stiles. "Goodnight Stiles."

Stiles closes his eyes as he smiles faintly, turning and laying on his side. thanks mom."

Melissa freezes for a moment as I do as well, looking at one another to make sure we heard the right thing. We don't get a chance to ask Stiles as soft snores start to come from his mouth; sounds of pure happiness from him. Melissa smiles at me before we both walk out of the room, leaving Stiles to sleep alone.

That was when I realized how similar Stiles and I were. For one, both of our mothers were dead. I'm not sure how or why Stiles' mom died, but what matters is that she's gone. Same with my mother. We both lost our mothers, which feels like losing a part of you. We were alive in more ways than one.

Melissa puts Stiles' chart in a slot by the door before turning towards me. "He'll probably be out for awhile. You can go ahead and head home. I'll keep an eye on him."

I stare at Stiles through the glass of the door, trying to decide what to do. I didn't want to leave Stiles here alone, but I knew that Melissa would take good care of him. Plus, I remembered that the Oni were going to be coming for Kira and Scott tonight. I should probably be there to help, but I didn't know what I would be able to do to be honest.

I sigh before reaching a conclusion. "You promise you'll look after him?"

Melissa nods and smiles. "He's like a son to me. Of course I will."

I nod a thank you before she turns and walks off, leaving me standing outside of the room. I take another long look at Stiles before I feel my phone buzz in my pocket, causing me to pull it out and see that it was from Kira.

"Are you coming?" she asks as I quickly reply with a yes.

I shove my phone into my pocket again before turning and walking off down the hallway, deciding to head over to Scott's.

——————————-

"You think I'm a what now?" I ask as Kira hands me a children's book. I shake my head as I take it, staring at the animal on the front page. "What is that?"

Kira almost smiles. "It's a kitsune. A fox that has nine tails."

I shake my head and try to hand her the book back. "Now why do you think I'm a...fox?"

Kira doesn't take the book. "Well, you've proven to be supernatural so far, like me, and this is the closest thing I've found to what you might be. Just read it, please?"

I sigh as she gives me puppy eyes, myself finally giving in. I hear Scott move around in the kitchen before I sit down onto the couch, opening the book to see more of these...kitsunes. They basically looked like little cartoon versions of foxes with eight extra tails attached to their behinds. I don't see what's so special about them.

"What's with the tails?" I ask, shaking my head.

Kira leans closer and points at one of the photos. "Kitsunes all have nine tails. They can rub them togther to create fire or lightning, called foxfire."

The word fire runs through my mind for a moment. "So do I have nine tails?"

Kira laughs. "No, you have to earn them, or so I've heard."

I nod my head slowly, realizing how crazy all of this really was. I mean, I've only been in Beacon Hills for a couple of weeks and I already know about werewolves, Oni, and whatever the hell a kitsune is. Plus the fact that someone tried to kill us in a car wreck. That's just icing on the cake.

"What's this?" I ask as I turn the page, coming across another photo of a kitsune that looked much different.

Kira leans closer, her tone changing. "I don't know much about those, but those kinds of kitsune can do more than what a regular one can."

I suddenly become interested. "What do you mean? What else can they do?"

Kira shrugs. "Like I said, I don't know much, but I know that they can control their powers better and be able to do more things with it."

I backtrace. "Do each kind of kitsune have a differnt power?"

Kira nods, knowing the answer to this one. "Yeah. There's many differnt types of kitsune. There's Thunder, celestial, wind, ocean, fire, and many others. If I had to guess, you'd be a fire kitune."

I nod my head slowly, still trying to grasp what all she was throwing at me. "What kind do you think you are?"

Kira shakes her head, staring at the floor. "I'm not sure about that one..."

I close the book before handing it back to Kira, seeing that it was starting to get dark outside already. "Well, that was a nice story time, but it's starting to get dark out."

Kira looks out as Scott does as well, walking in and joining us in the living room. He looks down at his watch before shaking his head, looking nervous.

"What?" I ask, seeing that there was something wrong.

Scott shakes his head. "In order to seal the barrier around the house, someone has to put mountain ash down in the doorway to activate it. My mom is supposed to be here by now..."

"Scott?" I hear someone call as the door slams shut. We all look around at one another before Scott gets up and goes to the kitchen, along with Kira and I.

"What are you doing here?" Scott snaps to the man who looked like Scott. Must be his father.

He shakes his head. "I live here."

Scott bawls his hand into a fist. "You haven't lived here since mom kicked you out six years ago."

The man's eyes narrow as he takes a deep breath. "I'm still your father-"

I zone out of their conversation as I look out of the window, seeing that it was turning dark. I pull on Kira's arm before she notices it as well, becoming more nervous by the second. Scott and his father continue to argue as I try to stop them.

"Scott!" I practically yell before he snaps his head in my direction, noticing that it was dark already. His face drains before his father is looking into the living room.

"Hello?" he calls, and that was when I realized that it was the shadow figure. One of the Oni. "Who are you?"

Scott's father starts to storm towards the Oni as Scott calls for him to stop, but he won't. A scream leaves my lips as the Oni reaches out and stabs the man through his shoulder with a sword. Kira screams from beside me as well as Scott's father falls to the floor, blood spouting out from his right shoulder.

Looks like tonight just got a lot more complicated.
