"Good," Angelina tells me as I pass the ball to another girl on my team. I don't know her name, but she knows mine. I guess all the girls do.
"Nice job, Riley. I think we are ready to scrimmage." Angelina throws me a red t-shirt.
As I put it on, I spot a familiar face from the corner of my eye.
"I'll be right back," I tell Angelina. I dash over to Maya.
"Maya?!" I cross my arms. "What are you doing here?" She shrugs. "If this is you, I want to see you play."
No, that's nice, but this was my escape. Something without her... I love Maya, a lot... but not all the time. I sigh, "Can you just leave me alone?"
She looks hurt. "What...?" I shake my head. "Maya, go home, we'll talk later, okay?" I don't wait for her answer. I don't feel like myself as I run back to my game.
---
I come home to find Maya sitting at my dinner table with my mom. "Oh, hey." Maya turns to face me and I see her face. I made a big mistake.
"Maya, I'm sorry. Okay? I'm sorry." It ends up sounding almost mad as I make my way across the room towards the hallway that leads to my bedroom.
Maya jumps up to follow me. I let her into my room before slamming the door. Maya glances at me, expectantly. I sigh heavily as make my way over to my bed, and start taking the shin guards off.
"Why'd you come?" I ask, and my voice is barely more than a whisper. Maya stuffs her hands in the pockets of her purple-and-white striped jeans. "Why'd you hate me for it?"
I close my eyes. "I don't hate you."
My best friend slowly crosses my room to our bay window. "Come back."
At first I don't understand what she means. Then I start untying my cleat. Oh.
My phone vibrates on my nightstand at nearly ten at night. With a groan, I squirm my way to a sitting position inside my cocoon of blankets. It's Lucas texting me.
Lucas: Maya told me you were playing soccer?!
Riley: yeah. I'm forward. Its awesome.
Lucas: you don't sound to excited.
Riley: that's because Maya doesn't like I do soccer
Lucas: well... Maya told me that you hate her bc she was trying to watch you play
Riley: when did she tell u all this?
Lucas: like two hours ago
Riley: where?
Lucas: it doesn't matter
Riley: yes it does
Lucas: Topanga's
I feel my stomach drop. Were they alone? Why wasn't I invited? If Lucas chose me why are they hanging out? Was it a date? Questions fill my mind and I push them all aside as I turn off my phone. I plug it in by my nightstand and manage to swarm myself with my blankets. I shut my eyes, waiting for sleep. But I think it's being scared off by the jealousy of tonight at Topanga's.
