We Meet Pluto
IDINA
"Read," Mr. Matthews says pointing at me. I look down at our textbook and read the quote.
"A quote by Winston Churchill, 'History will be kind to me for I intend to write it'"
"That he did. Who's gonna write their own history here? What is history? I keep forgetting," he jokes.
"Time passing?" Riley asks.
"Really, then how much time? Someone once said, '100 years from now, all new people.'"
"So 100 years?" Maya asks, Mr. Matthews shakes his head, "but you set me up!" she pouts.
"When do you think you should begin to make your own history?"
"It's already happening, the world evolves, we and it are forever changing," I say.
"but when?"
"Right now." Riley answers.
"Good. So, today we're talking about Winston Churchill. When the new people come, how do you want them talking about you?"
"Nicely hopefully," Riley replies.
"So Mr. History, how long do we have before history makes its decision about us? About what we will be remembered by?" I ask.
"What if they already have, what if they're writing it down right now?" Farkle continues my question.
"Doesn't matter. Now, chapter one. Riley, read."
"There is a comfort in knowing that history is fixed. You can no sooner change history than you can change the nine planets in our solar system from Mercury to Pluto."
"I see what you did there. Nice job, Matthews," I say. Riley tilts her head in a confused manner.
"What'd he do now?"
"Showed us history books can be wrong. History can be changed," I bluntly reply, "Don't you understand Riley that-"
"Look at the bird!" Maya cuts me off, facing Riley in the other direction in search of an unknown fake bird located within the classroom, she then looks at me seriously, "She doesn't know because she has us: The Riley Committee. The committee exists to keep certain information away from Riley."
"Like what?"
"Everything basically," Farkle answers.
"Well she's getting too smart, and the committee can't protect her for the rest of her life," Matthews says, then looks at his daughter coming to reality, "She's looking for a bird. Come on! Somebody's gotta tell her." Maya taps Riley's shoulder.
"Pumpkin?" she asks Riley.
"Peaches," Riley replies.
"See the thing is, they made a scientific discovery that Pluto isn't a planet anymore."
"But I love Pluto,"
"I know Riles," I say, "You gonna be okay?"
"I'm fine, continue Dad," she replies.
"All right, guys. So, we're talking about who we are now, and who we hope to be someday. How will we write our own history and decide what's important to us?"
"Well, they found a 100-year-old time capsule in Boston last week. Could we do one of those?"
"I love that idea, Farkle. In fact, we did one of those when I was in high school. We were gonna see what became of us in 15 years. Wait a minute. We were gonna see what became of us right now! We were gonna go back and see how much we've changed!" I look over at Riley, seeing her sad face.
"Yeah, well I really hope some of us never do."
FARKLE
At Topanga's cafe, we all sit around a box, our time capsule. Idina's hand is linked in mine as we sit next to our friends. I feel bad for Riley because she's still upset over the whole Pluto incident.
"She works her whole life to become a planet, and then it's just taken away from her!" Riley rants. Idina unlinks her hand from mine.
"I know it's hard Riles, I loved Pluto too. The name, it's spirit, small but mighty, dark but mysterious, everything you could want in a planet. You know, it's things like that which make me wonder do our hopes and dreams even really matter?"
"Well, I guess in another 15 years we're gonna find out," Riley replies, then Lucas holds up what he plans on putting in, "A buffalo nickel, really, that's what you're putting in the time capsule?"
"Yeah, Pappy Joe gave it to me the first time I rode a sheep in the rodeo. I wanted to be a rodeo champ, but I got older and gave up on my dream."
"Don't give up on your dreams Lucas," Maya's mother, Katy, says from behind the counter, "the only regrets I have are the dreams I gave up on too soon." I pull out my academic trophy.
"Well, I'm putting in my science fair lifetime achievement award," I say proudly then place it in the box alongside Lucas's coin, "What are you putting in Maya?"
"Nothing, no hopes or dreams equals no disappointment. Even though I'm not good at math I've memorized that equation by heart. Riles? What about you?"
"I'm putting in Pluto, I honestly don't know why it's so important for me to care about something that's so far away, but I do," she puts the purple ball in, "Idina your up." Idina pulls something out of her backpack. It's a red leather journal with an I engraved in it.
"I'm putting in my first songbook, I got it when I was ten and haven't stopped writing since," she places the songbook in the box, then closes it leaving it on the table, "don't worry, I'm not losing any songs, I have them all copied into another book, I just thought it was important to include the first thing that really made me feel like, me."
Cory, Topanga, and Shawn come bursting through the front door.
"ROAD TRIP!" Cory screams.
"Who wants to go instead of me? Any takers?" Shawn asks.
"There's not enough room, sorry Shawny, you're stuck with me." Idina stands up and walks over to Shawn, examining him.
"I don't think we've met before," she says with a peculiar look on her face, then sticks out her hand, "Idina."
"Uncle Shawn. I'm everybody's Uncle. Or just Shawn," he says shaking her hand, then walking over to the counter, "Miss Katy,"
"Mr. Shawn," she replies.
"What's this here," Cory says unimpressed as he opens our time capsule, "Nope not good enough!" he shouts.
"But these things are important to us," I protest.
"Why are there only four of them?"
"Because I'm not playing. I'm not a big fan of hope," Maya says.
"Nope, not doing it! Not going back again," Shawn exhaustedly says, sitting down in a chair.
"Come on! It's a chance to see what time's taught us! How life's treated us! Our history! You and me, Feeny, Shawn and Angela." All of our heads pop up, and Cory blushes with embarrassment.
"Give me a shovel and your head," Topanga says pointing at Cory, "No reason you need to know of."
"Who's Angela?" Katy asks, seeming a little jealous.
"Someone who used to be in my life, but that's way in the past. History."
"Ah, yes, well don't we all have those." Idina adjusts her glasses nervously, rolling the blue sleeves of her blazer up a little. I can't help my curiosity.
"Do you miss her?" I ask Shawn standing, then smile at my girlfriend, "I know I'd miss Idina if I didn't see her for a very long time," then I look at Shawn, "Do you think your old feelings will get all stirred up for her? And you'll miss her?"
"Farkle!" Idina shouts while Maya is grabbing Pluto and throwing it at me.
"Sorry, I thought it was a legitimate question!" I say sitting back down. Katy looks into Shawn's eyes, seeming a little hurt.
"Yeah Mr. Hunter, you gonna go get some feelings all stirred up?" he doesn't respond.
"Maya, Idina, I'm thinking we should be going with them," Riley says. Idina stands and goes on the other side of Maya.
"We're going with you," she announces to everyone.
"Katy, do you mind if we take Maya off your hands for the weekend?" Topanga asks.
"Have fun baby," Katy says, kissing Maya as she stands. Idina pulls out her phone and goes by the window.
"Mom? Hey, it's me. Oh, I'm fine, I was just wondering if I could go with the Matthews this weekend to Philly? Really? Thanks, Mom! Tell Ollie I love him, make sure to give him extra belly rubs for me!" I smile thinking of her little beagle as she turns off her phone, "We're all good."
"All right girls grab a shovel, we're digging up the past. Yay," Shawn says sarcastically leaving after the Matthews, with Maya and Riley following after him. Idina starts to leave, but I gently grab her arm.
"Before you go, I have something I wanna give you."
"Okay Farkly, what is it?" she asks using her nickname for me. I go back to my backpack, and pull out a navy blue jewelry box, opening it to reveal a silver necklace with her name on it; she gasps as I wrap it around her neck, "Farkle, it's beautiful. Why did you do this?"
"I wanted to get you an early Valentine's day present,"
"Farkle you've already done enough for me, just by being you, that's the best gift you could ever get me. Thank you, it's beautiful," she kisses my cheek and whispers in my ear, "I gotta go, but when I get back I'll give you my present," she smiles and runs out the door, leaving me wanting more of her.
PHILADELPHIA
"You said this was gonna be fun Matthews," I say complaining from exhaustion from digging in someone's backyard in Philly.
"Yeah, how can anybody make this fun?" Maya says in agreement with me. Riley comes up behind the two of us, putting a flower crown on Maya's head, and then on mine.
"I made one for Maya's head, and I made one for Idina's head," she giggles.
"Hey princess, aren't you supposed to be digging?" Shawn asks. She stares obliviously.
"Oh, but I was digging for an hour straight and all I found was that old metal box over there," she says pointing to the bench where the box she found stays. We all groan and drop our shovels. Maya and I hobble to the bench and flop down tiredly.
"Cory..." Shawn says walking over to his best friend, "I'm concerned"
"What's there to be concerned about, Shawnie?" He pauses as fear washes over his face.
"T-That," he screams, and Cory turns to see and an older man walking towards them, flashing a bright light. They gasp together.
"Mr. Matthews, Mr. Hunter, we meet again."
"Detention?"
"Oh no. Big boy detention for you two." Riley, Maya and I stand, and walk over near Topanga.
"Oh, we won't do well in big boy detention," Cory remarks.
"Who is that?" I whisper.
"Mr. Feeny, our teacher," Topanga says. We smile having heard so much about him from Matthews.
"Feeny!" Maya shouts as we start walking towards the teacher.
"Fee-hee-hee-hee-heenay!" Riley shouts.
"What, what, what, what!" I yell.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey!" Maya shouts, then Riley starts hissing at the old teacher for some reason, even making me raise an eyebrow. When she sees our reactions she stops.
"Okay. We'll be over there," she says, dragging Maya and I to the bench.
"Mrs. Matthews," Feeny says, addressing Topanga.
"How ya doing?" she asks.
"Oh, fine, but please put my flowers back, except for those. I'll attend to those myself," he walks over to us and sits between me and Riley as Maya sits on the other side of me.
"Is he a good father you poor, poor, girl?" he addresses Riley.
"I'm very lucky," she smiles. He turns to Maya and me.
"Is he a good teacher?"
"I think he's the best there is," I say.
"But he says you are," Maya finishes.
NEW YORK CITY
"Me and Angela, we were gonna be Cory and Topanga, but I guess there can only be one," Shawn hypothesizes as he finishes looking through the purse he buried in the capsule, "but still, me and Angela, I wonder what she's up to nowadays."
"Bye Shawn," Maya whispers with tears in her throat. I hug her side. We go into Riley's room. After some time, Shawn comes in, sitting next to Riley on the bay window as Maya sits down at the end of Riley's bed.
"Pluto is still out there for me," Riley says.
"I don't care," Shawn says. I huff at him.
"You weren't afraid to love somebody once!" I proclaim.
"Yeah, well, I... I'm done with that. I don't have that, I'm not going to have that,"
"You are," Riley encourages.
"There's someone out there for you, I know it," I add.
"So, you're saying Pluto is Angela?"
"No! I'm saying that Pluto is believing in something out there no matter what anybody says. Especially you. Because there is someone."
"How are you not getting this yet Shawnie?" Cory asks in the doorway. Shawn looks over at Maya, then walks and sits by her side.
"You believe in me?"
"I do," she replies.
"I don't know what I'm supposed to be for you,"
"Can you just be out there for me?"
"Yes. I can do that. I want to do that. What do you call that?"
"It doesn't matter what you call it. I just wanna know that you're there."
"Okay. I'm there."
TOPANGA'S CAFE
"I had to go to Treetop to get this back, but I felt like it was worth it," I hold up a wrinkled piece of paper, reading the title, "The Cowboy," I place it in the box, "this chance encounter brought me, my first real friend. If I never met Lucas I would've never met any of you. For that, I will be forever grateful to the universe. Lucas? Your turn."
"I'm not putting in a reminder of when I gave up on a dream," he holds up a pink-red tinted slip of paper.
"Your transfer slip," Riley says. He smiles at her.
"I'd rather be reminded of when something good started," he pats Farkle's shoulder, "You next buddy. Your science fair trophy?"
"Wasn't important enough for this," he says, revealing an orange turtleneck.
"Your favorite one," I say.
"It was the one I took off when I felt like I was nothing. But, you guys wouldn't let me be nothing. And since it's us that's gonna be together when we open this, I can't wait to see the something that I am," he places the turtleneck gently in the box, "Riley, Pluto?" she smiles at the purple planet.
"Yeah. Still Pluto. Whenever we open this, I hope I haven't stopped believing in things." We all stare at Maya.
"Okay, I'll play. But, you guys have to leave. Your parents and Shawn didn't tell each other what they were putting in, and that's the way I want to do it. I'm hoping we'll all be surprised," Farkle and I start to go to the counter to get a drink, but I stop for a moment.
"Hey. Whatever it is, I hope it works out the way you want it," Riley says.
"I know it will so dream dreams, Maya. I know you're gonna get everything you want. You deserve it,"
"Me too," she says. Then Farkle takes me to the counter where I order an iced tea and he gets a soda. We sit at the counter and drink our drinks. I smile at him, playing with my straw. He lightly burps from the carbohydrates.
"You know, you're cute when you burp," I chuckle.
"Those carbohydrates, you know, they get to you," he jokes. I laugh and turn to see Shawn and Katy start to talk. I grab Farkle by the hand, and lead him outside, where the girls have helped me set up a picnic and my guitar.
"W-What is this?" he asks.
"I promised you your present when I got back from Philly, so just sit down, and let me give my present to you. I wrote you a song, I call it 'Heart to Heart'," he sits down as I pull my guitar around my chest.
Heart to Heart
He's the boy, takes my heart and makes me wanna close my eyes, thinking about you and me.
He's the one, who I know we'll never leave me there to die, make me cry, he'll be there when I need him.
He's the one, beats my heart like a drum. And I need to see what we could be.
Cause I don't wanna let you go, I don't wanna say goodnight. You're the one would hold my heart, keeps it safe through the night. So bring it back to me, just so that I can see you one last time. Cause I love you. My valentine.
