Chapter Fifteen ∕ The Date
Falling for Sakurai Yuki was as natural as the rain falling from the sky.
Gojo Satoru didn't even realize it was happening until it already happened. It made him wonder if he'd been in love with her since day they first met, and if it had just taken him all this time to realize it.
Whenever it started, though, it didn't matter. All that mattered was the fact that he was very much aware of it now.
Every time his fingertips brushed against her own, or his gaze lingered on her for a second too long, or she laughed at something stupid he said, he was extremely aware of the butterflies swarming his stomach.
At first, he hated the sensation. It was foreign, and something similar to being sick, so he did his best to ignore the sensation altogether. Now that he was aware of the source, though, he welcomed it. Yes, Sakurai Yuki made his heart do somersaults, and he wasn't opposed to the feeling.
He'd always thought she was pretty. Her rare silver-infused eyes paired with her blush colored hair made her one of the most stunning people he'd ever had the pleasure of encountering. And she especially looked beautiful now.
Sitting across from him, slurping up her ramen underneath the awful lighting of the little restaurant he took her to. He was pretty sure he could stare at her for hours and not get bored. Every time his gaze traced her face, he noticed something new. Like the lone, barely visible freckle underneath her right eye, or the way the left side of her lip was angled a millimeter higher than the other side.
Without thinking, a dreamy sigh slipped out of his throat, diverting Yuki's attention away from her ramen and instead to him.
She swallowed her mouthful of noodles. "What? Did I get broth on my face?" She asked with furrowed eyebrows, reaching for a napkin.
He quickly shook his head. "No, it's not that. You just—you're so pretty, Kiki."
Her eyes widened, then she started to cough loudly. He couldn't help grinning at the way color flushed to her cheeks.
"Shut up, stop calling me that." She grumbled, proceeding to dab at her lips with the napkin.
Satoru shrugged, and leaned back in his chair. "Nope, never."
She glared at him, but there wasn't a single drop of intimidation in it. It was like being glared at by a kitten. "Did anyone ever tell you that you're extremely annoying?"
"Annoyingly handsome~" He cooed at her.
"Not a single person on this Earth has ever called you that."
"My mom does." Satoru frowned.
"Your mom doesn't count. She's just nice."
"Oh, so you think my mom's opinion doesn't matter?" He asked dramatically. "I'll make sure to tell her you feel that way next time I see her."
She pointed a chopstick at him threateningly. "Gojo Satoru, don't you dare."
"Okay, okay, I won't..." He conceded, raising his hands up. "...If you kiss me tonight."
Now her ears were turning a deep scarlet. "Blackmailing me into kissing you? Not very gentlemanly of you."
He laughed. "When have I ever claimed to be a gentleman, Yuki? I'm a bad boy."
The second the words left his lips, she started to fake gag. "You are such a freak, Toru!" She shouted at him, earning an annoyed look from one of the servers. Yuki didn't notice it, though.
"I can't help it that my freaky side just comes out around you!" Satoru retorted, once again raising his hands defensively.
Yuki stared at him for a minute, her eyes narrowed and her nose scrunched up, while he stared back with a similar expression. Around the same time, though, the two burst into laughter.
To Satoru, Yuki's laughter was something like the chorus of a thousand angels. He was convinced it could cure the soul of anyone blessed enough to hear it. Which is part of the reason he was confused why they got more weird looks—everyone in that restaurant should be grateful for the chance to hear her laughter!
Once they finally calmed down, he watched as she took a sip of her water, the ghost of a smile still apparent on her lips.
Satoru suddenly felt compelled to reach out and grab ahold of her free hand, seemingly catching her off guard as she looked at him with wide eyes. He cleared his throat and he began to rub her knuckles with the heel of his thumb.
"Seriously, though... Thank you, Kiki."
A soft, nervous laugh slipped through her nose. "For what?" She asked stupidly, tilting her head at him.
"For, y'know... Giving me a chance. I know I was kind of an asshole to you before, and you didn't deserve that." He confessed to her, and gave her hand a tight squeeze in an attempt to show how serious he was.
He felt her hand tense up for a brief second, her breath hitching in the back of her throat, and then she relaxed. "Yeah, you kind of were... But I can see how sorry you are." She gave him a reassuring smile, then returned the squeeze.
"I am. So sorry."
She looked down, laughing softly. "Besides... We both know this was inevitable..."
Satoru perked up at that. "Oh? What was inevitable?"
"This." She raised their intertwined hands off the table slightly to emphasize them. "Us."
He didn't hate the way he grinned like a huge idiot at that word. Us. He almost couldn't believe there was an us now. And he also wished he would've burned the sound of her saying that word into his mind forever.
"You really think so?" He asked, flashing his bright smile at her.
She nodded, and he noticed her cheeks were now darker than her rosy locks. "Yeah. Unfortunately."
Satoru feigned hurt at that, retracting his hand away from hers to instead hold it over his chest. "Unfortunately?! You know, many people would call you lucky for being the owner of my heart. You should be more grateful."
The silver flakes shimmered under the lights as she once again rolled her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've heard that one before. I think you need to try and consider, though, that maybe you're the lucky one."
He rested his chin in his palm, watching her fondly as she swirled her chopsticks around the half-eaten bowl of ramen. "Am I?"
She hummed in confirmation, not looking up from her food. "Mhm. Lots of people want me. But for whatever reason, I chose you."
"I guess we're both lucky, then." Satoru said in a soft voice.
An equally soft smile graced Yuki's lips. "Yeah. I guess we are."
After finishing their ramen and getting annoyed looks from employees that signaled it was time for them to leave, the next few hours seemed to fly by.
Satoru's palm was warm against Yuki's hand as the two of them walked around the city together, talking about anything and everything. Yuki was pretty sure she could spend an eternity talking to Satoru and not get bored.
Partly because he was a fucking idiot who said the dumbest things to try and make her laugh, but also because he just... Understood her. Even when she said something she thought sounded crazy or stupid, he always understood what she was saying. There wasn't really another person alive who Yuki could say got her the way he did.
That was why the time flew by, and the next thing she knew, it was nearing midnight. Satoru repeatedly tried to convince her that they were fine and wouldn't get into trouble if they got caught breaking curfew, but Yuki didn't listen and insisted they get back to the school.
The whole walk across campus and towards the dormitories, Yuki could feel her heart slamming against her chest. She knew what was coming next, and she was both dreading and excitedly anticipating it.
A few too many times, she caught herself absentmindedly staring at his lips, and even though he pretended not to notice it, she knew he caught it too.
And before she knew it, he was slowing to a stop, and she realized they were standing in front of the dorm buildings. Their night was coming to a close, and now there was only one thing left to do.
Satoru turned to face her, clearing his throat. "Well. Here we are..."
Yuki nodded. "Here we are."
He gazed down at her for a minute, his brows furrowed and lips parted slightly like he was trying to figure out what to say next. "Kiki. You know I was joking, right? I mean, kind of. Mostly. I do want to... Y'know... But only if you want to."
She blinked at him, feeling like a deer caught in headlights. "No-no-no, it's not that I don't want to. I do. It's just that..."
"Just that...?"
Ugh. He was really going to make her say it.
With a frustrated groan, she buried her face in her palms. "I've never kissed anyone, okay?"
It went quiet for a minute, and Yuki had half a mind to find the nearest bridge to jump off of. And to make matters worse, Satoru broke the silence by bursting into laughter.
Yuki slowly peeled her eyes open to look at him, a scowl crawling up her face. "Stop laughing! It's not funny!" She snapped at him.
"No, no! I'm not laughing because of that, I promise!" He immediately started apologizing, and grabbed ahold of her hands. "I'm just laughing because you're so cute."
"Shut up."
"I'm serious!" He defended himself, giving her hands a firm shake. "I'm sorry for laughing, okay?"
Yuki gave him a deadpan look, while he continued smiling at her, then sighed. "Listen, I just know you've kissed other people, and I'm probably a really bad kisser, so I'm just... Worried."
"Come on, Kiki. You know I don't care about all that. And besides, there's no way you're a bad kisser, because you've never been bad at anything."
Once again, she rolled her eyes at the flattery. "That's not true."
He frowned. "Yes it is! I mean, except for bowling, but that's a useless skill anyway."
Yuki pressed her lips together into a thin line, looking down as she contemplated his words. She knew he was right, and she didn't have anything to worry about — especially with him.
"Kiki." He called out that stupid nickname again, and gently cupped her jaw with one hand. "Really, we don't have to."
As he started to softly rub his thumb into her cheek, Yuki once again caught herself staring at his lips. Despite all of her insecurities, she knew that if she was going to give away her first kiss anytime soon, she wanted it to be with Satoru. Someone she trusted with her whole chest.
Besides, his lips looked really soft.
Without another word, she stepped up onto her tiptoes and captured his lips with her own.
Even though she had no other experiences to go off of, Yuki was pretty sure Satoru was a good kisser. Once her lips connected with his, he wasted no time dropping one hand to her waist and using the other to tug her face closer to his, deepening the kiss.
It was passionate, but it wasn't rough by any means. He cradled her face tenderly, like she was the most precious object in the world to him — spoiler alert: she was.
Yuki didn't even realize her hands were moving until one came to the base of his head, her fingers entangling themselves in his silky, snowy hair. Her other hand grabbed ahold of his bicep, stabling herself.
If you'd told her five years ago that she would be standing here, passionately kissing the boy who spit on her the first time they met, she would have laughed in your face. But now that she was standing here, body pressed against his, lips moving in perfect tandem with his, nothing had ever felt so right.
Funny how life works like that, right?
The realization that her lungs were just about empty didn't hit her until Satoru was pulling away from the kiss, giving her the chance to suck in a deep breath. She probably could have kept kissing him until she passed out.
He pressed his forehead against hers, and she could hear the slight smile in his voice as he spoke. "Well? How was that?"
Yuki laughed softly between breaths. "It was fine, I guess." She lied.
He abruptly pulled away to look down at her in bewilderment. "What?! It was fine, you guess? That was great!" He shouted back at her.
She shrugged. "Mm, I've had better."
"What?! Literally who? I'll — oh." Upon noticing the mischievous smile she wore, he finally realized she was joking, then scoffed. "You are so annoying, you know that, right?"
"Says you?"
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, but don't act like you don't like it."
"I don't?"
"Sure." He shook his head before leaning down to reconnect his lips to hers.
Yuki wasn't sure why she had been so afraid to do this sooner. Because now that she'd gotten a taste for kissing Gojō Satoru, she knew this was something she could get used to.
