Chapter Two

The air outside is chilly and the wind that blows it against my partially covered arms makes me shiver a bit. I don't move from my position above George's arrays of multicolored flowers, which are planted off to the side of a path he created, I assume. I've heard that he's quite the yard worker these days, and his land surely proves it. It's filled with all kinds of flowers and decorations, all of them attended to and placed neatly. You can tell it'd been well thought out by someone.

"Do you sing?" I ask Julian, continuing to stare down at the flowers as he steps beside me to do the same. The question has been on the tip of my tongue since I seen him side by side with his father, because what other reason could there be that he's towing along with John now? I once overheard my father tell Linda that John wasn't really interested in life at home because Cyn had become a boring house wife & Julian was nothing but a boy who resembled him. He didn't know Jules and he couldn't find anything that would bond him with his son. Julian was simply just a boy who had the same last name and lived under the same roof. Something in this older version of Julian must have appealed to John enough to let him stick around.

"I play guitar more, but I guess you could say I sing, yeah."

I smile softly. I've found something in common with him as well. "I play guitar, too," I tell him. I pick my eyes away from the flowers and over to him. "Did your dad teach you?"

He nodded his head. "A little, but the school I attend helps me more. He taught me the basics when I was younger, though." Julian answered. He stepped away from the flowers and began walking down the path so I followed. I wrapped my arms around myself for warmth as a gust of wind hit.

"Does your dad teach you how to play?"

"Yeah," I nod my head. "He started me off when I was young, six or so, and he has me going him on tours & stuff. I don't play with him on the stage, but they play backstage sometimes."

"And you like that? Following him on tours and things?"

I shrug my shoulders. "No, not quite but I really don't have any other choice," I reply simply. "I don't have a mother - well, not one who wants me, so I can't stay with her."

"My mom still talks to yours. Her name's Janie, right? Janie Lucus?"

My breath hitches for a moment when he says her name. No one talks about her around my house so hearing her name takes me back a bit. When I finally regain my ability to be normal, I nod my head. "Yeah," I reply simply, not wanting to go further into detail. That's about all I know about her anyway, despite spending four years of my life with her.

I rub my hands up and down my arms again, goosebumps beginning to form on my arm because of the cold that hits them. Quiet settles over Julian and I as we walk through Friar Park, the only sound separating it from silence being the crunch of rock under our feet. Things got awkward when he mentioned my mom, and I really didn't want that to happen. I was liking the conversation I was having with him.

After a few more moments of that bitter silence, Julian spoke. "Do you want my jacket? You look awful cold?"

I look over at him to see a grin that reminds me of his father's. Everything Julian does reminds me of his father; they just look so bloody much alike.

"Won't you be then?"

"You won't be, though." He slips off the leather jacket and hands it over to me. I stare at it, not really want to take it because I know he's going to be freezing if I do. He shouldn't have to suffer because I wasn't smart enough to grab my own this morning.

"Please just take the thing, love. My arm is getting tired."

"But I-"

He cuts me off, "You're freezing, so take the thing. Let me be a gentleman."

I give him a gentle smile before taking the jacket and putting it on. Its a bit oversized on me, but it's warm so I really have nothing to complain about.

"So," he says, "Do you not go to school?"

"I'm home schooled. All of us are, and not just because they travel. They think it's nicer to have us all around & they think it's safer too. My dad doesn't fancy the thought of us getting hounded with Beatles questions, you know?"

He nods his head. "The kids at my school don't really hound me about my dad, but it's probably only because I don't make the newspaper with him every week. Just have his last name and that's about it."

"You seem to have his attention now," I point out. Julian looks at the ground, and smiles a bit. I don't think it's a very genuine grin though, and the words that follow help support that thought.
"He just wanted me to meet Sean. That's the boy who has the most of his attention. S'alright, though. I understand."

I feel bad for him, because I know what it feels like. It's not fair but that's the price you've got to pay to be a Beatles' child, I believe. Still doesnt mean it sucks any less, I know that.

"He loves you," I say and I don't exactly know why. I don't hang around John and my dad doesn't say much about him these days. I definitely do not know if he loves the boy standing in front of me, but I felt compelled to say it. I mean, John did bring him along and he was showcasing him, so he has to love him right?

"I know."

The conversation falls into that awkward silence again. I let it go for a long time as we walk alongside George's river because I have other things to focus on, like how beautiful George has made the place and how much I'd give to live in this wonderland of sorts. I may not like George a lot that much, but I will say he has excellent taste.

"Its so pretty out here," I speak. I don't peer over at Julian but I feel his orbs on me, and from the corner of my eye, I see that smile of his again.

"Do you have a boyfriend?"

I turn my head towards him now, furrowing my eyebrows but allowing the ends of my lips to turn upwards. It's a playful grin. "Why?" I ask teasingly.

"Well, I don't know," he responds sheepishly, shoving his hands in his pockets. "Just curious, really."

I shake my head no. "I'm home schooled, remember?"

"I know but that doesn't mean you don't have yourself a guy. You're not shut off from people, are you?" He laughs.

"No," I responded simply, my grin turning into a smirk.

We stop talking for a bit and just stare at each other, both of our lips reflecting one another's smirk. "Would you fancy going out with me?" he finally asks and I stick my lip out and rise an eyebrow, as if weighing my options.

"Well, I don't know. I've never been on one before and you are a Lennon."

"And? We aren't that bad." Julian says, playfully defensive.

"McCartneys say different."

Before he responds, he's cut off by dad's voice filling the air. "Ava!" it shouts, causing for me to look over at the house where he's waving his hands, calling me over.

I look back over at Julian and he gives me a sad grin. "I suppose I must leave you now, young sir," I say, sounding especially posh which causes for him to laugh a bit.

I slide off his coat and hand it back to him. "Let me take you to the movies, yeah?" he asks, and I think about it for a moment.

"Ava!" my dad shouts again and annoyance rings in his tone. It must not have went as well as I hoped it would in there.

"Alright, but you're going to have to find a way to contact me because I don't think he'll wait long enough for me to give you our number."

"Okay," he says happily and I leave him, right there next to the river to go to my Dad. "I'll be seeing you soon, my dear!" He shouts after me, sounding posh himself. I laugh but don't look back; I continue to make my way over to my Dad.

Once there, I see the look of irritation sprawled out across his aging features. His lips are settled into a frown, his arched eyebrows furrow and his hazel orbs scream frustration. "Why don't you ever come when I call you?" he asks and I frown.

"I was talking to Julian," I respond.

He sighs, "It's always the Lennons innit?"
