Gilan's Promise

Hey, just a quick one-shot that popped into my mind! It's about what happens when Gilan meets a flute player. Takes place after The Burning Bridge right after the war. Hope you enjoy!

Gilan sat in the back of the room, the hood of his cloak up, throwing his face in shadow. A couple of musicians were playing an upbeat tune at the inn Gilan was currently staying at. It was a joyus occasion: the war had been won, Morgarath had been defeated, and all was peaceful in the kingdom once again. But Gilan couldn't get over the guilt and sadness that Will's capture had left behind. He felt it was his fault that Will had been taken. That if he had stayed with him, Will would be safe and sound and home right now, not halfway to Skandia on a wolfship as a slave. He thought of Will as a brother and in his mind, he had failed Will. These feelings combined added up to a very unhappy Gilan. And this only grew when a flute player started a solo peice. He remembered saying something way back on the Soltary Plains when he Halt and Will had been hunting the Kalkara. It went something along the lines of, "Next flute player I meet I will split his lip for him." And, Gilan thought in grim determination, I'm just mad enough to do it.

Deciding that there was nothing left to lose, he got up and made his way to the front. From there he stepped onto the stage, grabbed the flute, and punched the man in the face. The other customers at the inn gasped in surprise. The flute player looked dazed as Gilan threw down the flute, breaking it, and stomped out of the inn.

"Stupid flutes." Gilan muttered to his horse, Blaze, as he saddled her up. Then he sighed, "I guess it's not his fault that the Stone Flutes exist." He smiled grimly, " But it did make me feel remarkably better." Blaze whinnied and Gilan gaped at her.

"I am not starting to act like Halt!" He huffed indignantly. Blaze whinnied again, Pretty close though. I hear Halt's throwing people into moats. You're just as bad, punching people randomly in the face. Gilan just shook his head, Blaze was supposed to be on his side!

"You heard those flutes. He had it coming for him!"

Whatever, Blaze replied. Gilan peered closely at his horse's face. Sometimes he wondered if Blaze was actually communicating with him or if he was making it all up in his head. Surprisingly Blaze responded,

Of course it's happening inside your head Gilan, but why on earth should that mean that it isn't real?

"But I didn't say that out loud!" Gilan exclaimed. Then he sighed, he would never get the last word with his horse. And on that note, he mounted and started home.

Hey, hope you liked it! See if you can guess which line is a famous quote from a famous book series. I know most people will get it and if you don't shame on you! You need to read that series! Anyways, remember to vote, comment, and check out my other stories. BYEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!
