"Your dad's a bartender?" Jake asked, laughing again.

Yeah! We're back to ourselves, both of us ignoring what happened in the car.

"You're not helping, Jake!" I said sighing. "I don't think he's my father."

"Why not?" Jake asked raising an eyebrow.

I shrugged.

"Just doesn't feel like him."

"You don't even know him Eryn!" he replied, laughing again.

I scowled.

"Okay, okay. Relax! I'll go talk to him."

I nodded.

"He knows about you, right?" he asked.

"Mom did tell him she was pregnant back then, so yeah, he'd know."

He nodded before walking away to the counter. I grabbed an empty seat by a table that gave me a clear view on the counter.

Jake approached the counter slowly and casually. He started talking to him, getting him engaged in a small conversation. I watched the exchange keenly. After fifteen minutes of simply talking and conversing, Jake finally turned around and walked back over to the table I'm seated at.

"It's not him," he grumbled slumping down on the chair.

"Why's that?" I asked.

"He said he doesn't remember making anyone pregnant," he said nonchalantly. "I'm glad he was an easy going guy. Otherwise I'd have been dead by now."

"Stop exaggerating Jake," I said rolling my eyes.

"Gee, that was just an exclamation!Who's next on the list?"

"David Foster."

*****************

"It's not him," I said looking away. Jake groaned.

"How can you say it's not him? You don't even know him! That's just insane! Come on Eryn you're better than that!"

"Go talk to him then," I said looking away.

"Fine!"

I watched his back as he made his way across the courtyard and disappeared into the school.

David Foster is an elementary school teacher. And I don't think he's my dad. I don't know why, but I feel like I'll know if it's him. That's supposed to be impossible but, with what I'm capable of doing now, I always give everything a second thought.

"It's not him."

I jumped hitting my head on the ceiling.

"You idiot! Don't scare me like that!"

He chuckled.

"Wait! That was fast! How'd you know it wasn't him?"

"He knew about her being pregnant."

"So?"

"He said it was someone else."

"He could've been lying," I pointed out.

He gave me a dry look.

"Says the one who said it wasn't him just with a glance."

I rolled my eyes.

"Get back in the car wacko!"

"Who's next? Gilbert Willman?"

I nodded.

***************

Jake groaned.

"Can you save that thought for after I talk to him?"

I shrugged.

"It's not my fault that he doesn't feel like my dad."

"Just keep your mouth shut and wait here," Jake ordered.

"Okay, dupe dad."

He rolled his eyes and walked into the studio. He approched the photographer and began talking. At one point, he pointed at me and the guy shook his head.

Jake sighed. They exchanged a quick handshake and he walked back over to me.

"Told you it wasn't him."

"I don't wanna do this anymore," he said sighing.

"It's okay, I'll do it."

"No!" he stated sharply. "I'll do it! Who's next on the list?"

"Jake, you've done more than enough. You should stop. I'll handle the next few."

"No. Tell me who's next."

"Blake Nelson."

"Okay."

*******************

"What do you think?"

"No, not him."

"Okay, wait here," he said getting out of the car.

I sighed.

What was I thinking? That I could just barge in at all the locations and demand that I was his daughter? Oh, I am so stupid! He might not even remember Mom! Now Jake's doing the thing that maybe all for nothing, because I'm so fucking stupid! I hate myself. I should've just stayed back home with the fact that mom accepted me having super powers. But, no! Being the nosy wreck I am, I had to get to the bottom of it! Look where it got us! In the middle of nothing and meaningless searches. I know Jake'd somewhere important to be today. And he didn't even flinch when I told him to take me! I'm so-

"Stop sulking. We'll find him," he said getting back in the driver's seat and closing the door.

"I wasn't!" I defended.

"Yeah, you weren't," he said rolling his eyes.

He started the car.

"Who's next?"

"Ethan Huskley."

"Whoa!" he exclaimed. "Isn't he the CEO of Huskley enterprises?"

"He is?" I asked blankly.

"Yeah," he said, eyes on the road. "I can't believe your mother had it going-"

I looked away.

"Shit! Eryn, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like-"

I raised a hand.

"It's okay Jake. You don't have to apologize."

He mumbled something, but I didn't catch what it was. The rest of the ride remained silent. Today was a lot too awkward for our liking. We hadn't had trouble with each other before. We were perfectly fine with situations like this. My stupid curiosity messed up everything! Heck it even messed up my already messed up life and I didn't think that was even possible, until now. Well, I know now that things really can take a turn for the worst. It just slips from our hands if we aren't holding on to it too tightly. I won't ever make that mistake again! Ever! Life is too precious to make the same mistake again, twice!

"Look, we're gonna find him. Don't worry too much!" Jake said sighing.

I smiled.

"Jake?"

"Yeah?"

"Thanks! Ethan will be the last one. If it isn't him, we're going back."

"But Eryn-"

"No buts Jake," I said cutting him off. "We're done. We're going back home."
