Chapter One
I opened the door, letting my mum in first. She smiled and thanked me, then made her way somewhere deep inside the house. I sighed and wheeled my suitcase into the front room, looking around. The floor was carpet and the walls a light brown. This is so American. I shook my head and found a room, settling with the large room at the end of a short hallway. I dropped my suitcase on the ground and set my computer on it, then placed my guitar case on the ground. I am so tired. I should text Ray.. or go to sleep... I decided on the latter and curled up in a ball on the ground. It might be a stupid thing to do but I'm tired, and any time can be sleepy time. I giggled and closed my eyes, drifting off into probably the best sleep I had in months.
~~
"C'mon, Zeke, I let you sleep in for this long, get up and make yourself useful. I could really use your help around the house, with the furniture and all." She grabbed my arm and shook it, scaring the shit out of me. I sat up and looked around. Where the hell am I? I closed my eyes as the memories of yesterday flooded back. Florida, USA. America, home of the free, right? "how lucky I am..." I mumbled and walked into the main room.
"Oh yeah, and don't forget, Kelly is coming to pick you up at three." I'm still not sure why she's picking me up but I'll go along with it.
"Okay. and what time is it now?" I asked her.
"Currently eleven. Help me move the sofa and beds." I gave her a weak smile and gestured to the couch sitting right in the middle og=f the room.
"This one?" I ask.
"Yes. Do me a huge favour and put it against the left wall, please."
~~
Apparently, my mom believes that 'helping her' means "Do it all for me whilst I scroll down Facebook and drink your Darjeeling that Ray gave to you." So there I was, correcting the position of the sofa while my mom mumbled something about her cousin giving birth. Finally. I finished with the chairs and furniture in the den, only for mom to ask if I could set up the bed in her room.
"Mom, you know that's a two person job, right?" I asked, out of breath.
"So ask one of the movers to help you." She mumbled
"There are movers?" I ask.
"Why couldn't they set up the furnishings in the den?"
"Because I didn't want to bother them. They're outside having a lunch break. You should go talk to them and ask one of them to help you set up the master bed." I groaned and walked out of the den, kicking a leaf that was on the ground. I made my way out the door to see two guys sitting in the back of a moving van, talking and laughing about something. I really don't want to talk to these guys, they could be douches. I hate douches. Finally, I just built up the nerve to walk up to the two. One of them was tall and scrawny, with medium brown hair, dark chocolate skin and a baseball cap. He was wearing a uniform that says "Brother's Movers" on the breast pocket and converses. The other guy was shorter with a buzz cut. He was wearing the same uniform as the first, but you could plainly see the sleeves of tattoos running down his arms.
Here goes...
"Hey, would one of you please help me set up the bed in the master bedroom?" They both looked up at me.
"Oh cool! You're British?" The one with the buzz cut and the tattoos asked. I groaned. I do that too much.
"Yes, I am. Haven't you talked to my mum?" I reply.
"Yeah, I'm sorry about him." The other said. He stood up and walked towards me.
"I'm Aiden, and that's Jake. Welcome to America." Aiden held out his hand for me to shake, so of course I did.
"I'm Zeke, and thanks, I think. I'm not very fond of it so far..." He just laughed and firmly shook my hand.
"You'll love it here. America Is great."
Jake came up to me and held his hand out, just like the other.
"Hi. I'm Jake. I really don't need him to introduce me, but he insists. I don't know why he always..." He takes my hand and shakes it, then continues to babble. Aiden punches him in the arm then looks at me.
"Sorry, he doesn't know how to control his mouth." He laughs.
"That's fine" I return a chuckle.
"So anyway, what did you need?" Aiden asks while Jake is still babbling, talking about having toes instead of teeth.
"Oh, I asked if you could help me set up my mum's bed in the master bedroom."I asked again. Jake laughed.
"Mum." He said. I blushed, now really self-conscious about the way that I talk. Aiden hit Jake's arm again and said
"Don't offend him!"
"No, it's fine. It's like the way you Americans say 'aluminum.'" I tried my best to imitate an American accent. Aiden just laughed and started walking to the moving truck, where mum's bedding and bed frame are.
"Jake, my hands are full. Could you get the comforter?" It was my turn to laugh.
"Comforter? That is the ugliest sounding word for 'duvet' that I've ever heard in my life."
"Nope, here we just call it a comforter." Jake looked back at me and smiled.
"Why is America so complicated?" I groaned.
I'll spare you the details, but after an hour or so we finally got mum's bed up. Jake stubbed his toe and Aiden couldn't stop laughing for at least ten minutes.
~~
"It's been really nice talking with you, maybe we'll run into each other again!" Aiden cheerily exclaimed as he and Jake walked back to the moving truck.
"That would be awesome!" I replied. I usually hate people, but these guys seem cool.
"Bye Zeke!" Jake squealed. I laughed and waved at them as they finally left. What am I going to do with myself now? Suddenly aware that I was in my driveway, I made my way back inside.
"Mom, I'll be in my room setting up if you need me." I called to her while I walked through the hallway.
"Don't get too cozy Zether, your aunt will be here in around an hour." Holy shit, it's already two?
"Kay" I groaned as I entered my room. It looks better now, because my bed is in place and I have a couple of band posters up. My phone was sitting on my pillow, so I decided to check it. Three texts from Ray. I don't really want to talk to him right now though, I'm slightly pissed. Looking up, I saw my TV across the room. That's what I'll do. I turned on my Playstation and the telly, then put it on HDMI3, so that I can actually use the PS3. Grabbing the remote, I went to Netflix and started going through shows, finally settling on Pushing Daises. Content, I lay in front of my TV on my bed, watching this horrifically unrealistic show. My phone vibrated again, but this time it wasn't Ray.
UNKNOWN NUMBER-
Hey it's aiden. I managed to steal your number
ME to Aids-
Cool. I'm probably going to like, relentlessly text you now though.
Aids-
Lol that's fine. i just got home so i thought i should text you. Can you hang out tomorrow?
I started to type "yeah" but I remembered that I would be at my aunt's place.
ME to Aids-
Nah, I don't think I can. I have to go to my aunts for like a month or something.
Aids-
is that good or bad ?
ME to Aids-
Bad. She is the ultimate hillbilly.
Aids-
ooh, that's rough. sorry dude. I gotta go now, see ya' around.
ME to Aids-
That's okay. Bye man
I hit send and looked back up to be faced with the end credits.
"Frank! Susan's here, let's go!" My mom screamed across the house. I groaned for the millionth time today and shut off the telly and PS3. I grabbed my charger from the wall, put my phone in my back pocket and grabbed my suitcase. Here goes nothing.
