My Story
There's a reason why I'm invisible, or at least I can explain why I can't be seen. I realize this, I haven't properly introduced myself. Hi, I'm Lillie Burke. I'm 5'9" and 69 years old. I wish I could say that that was old, but compared to most people, I was basically an infant. Before you freak out, let me explain.
I'm a ghost, a spirit of the dead. Hades, king of the underworld, occasionally sends spirits back into the world. Why? I dunno. Sometimes he needs something, but some of the time he lets spirits go back if, A.) he feels like they shouldn't have died, like they should have gotten more out of life, and B.) Persephone comes back and he's all happy and generous. Sometimes it's Persephone that sends mortal souls back to the world, but not usually. I remember the day perfectly, as if every sentence, movement, awkward pause, everything was burned into the back of my mind. Here's how I remember it:
I was standing around being bored in the Fields of Asphodel when a booming voice from above spoke.
"Lilly Michelle Burke, report to Hades' castle immediately. That's Lilly Michelle Burke, to Hades' castle. Also, whoever is throwing rocks into Tartarus, quit it. You've been hitting the jailers, not the prisoners. Either get better aim or stop completely. Thank you," The voice said, changing from demanding and frightening at the beginning to kind of whiny towards the end.
I walked forward in the direction of Hades' castle, and the path seemed to stretch before me. Every part of my body was trembling as my mind was clouded with thoughts. I tripped on the path close to the stairs and hit my face on the black stone.
"Oh, Styx," I mumbled, because saying Styx was almost as bad as cursing, where I stood. I quickly stood up and continued up the steps. They were narrow and there were a lot of them. When I looked down, I seemed to be about ten feet off the ground. I looked at the dark, wooden doors. There was a large brass knocker about twenty feet above my head, obviously for other gods. I looked more at my height, and I saw a smaller brass knocker just within my reach. I grabbed it and slammed it against the door once before it swung open. I looked up.
Above me was a man about thirty feet tall with a nicely groomed beard and a skinny face. I couldn't see most of his features. He wore black and dark purple robes that swept over his feet.
"Hello," he said simply. His voice echoed around the hall, even though he hadn't spoken that loud.
"Um, hi," I yelled up to him. "Is it possible for you to be in speaking distance?" I guess I sounded whiny, and I was about to apologize before he shrunk down to a man about six feet tall, just a few inches above my head.
"Sorry about that. Sometimes I forget how tiny mortals are," he smiled, and I realized that he was pretty handsome. He had teeth that seemed a blinding white, with dark brown eyes. He had pale skin, most likely from lack of sunlight.
"Th-that's okay," I said, trembling. I had read that Hades could purposely make people scared, but I didn't think he'd do that to a guest that he called to his castle purposely.
"Sorry," he said again, noticing my fear. "I tend to have this aura that freaks people out."
"That's perfectly alright, my lord," I said, finally realizing that I was speaking to a god. I dropped to one knee and lowered my head.
"You may stand," Hades said, offering me a hand. "Come now, Persephone made us some tea." I took his hand and he guided me into the kitchen. Everything was made for thirty-foot-tall gods and goddesses, so I felt like a bug in Hades' castle. He led me through a small door and into a room that looked like a living room, only much fancier. The chairs were lined with royal purple silk and had the same color cushions. Inside there was a woman about the size of Hades, pouring tea into some cups. I guessed she was Persephone.
"Oh, Lilly, you're here," she said, sitting down. "Now, this is going to sound weird, but do you remember when you died?"
I breathed out, trying to remember. "Gosh, it must have been at least fifty years ago. Fifty-three, I think."
Persephone nodded solemnly. "Hermes," she said, waving her hand at man that had been standing in the corner.
"Wait, before you do or say anything, I just wanted to know- why am I here? Why did you call me to your castle?" I looked at Hades and Persephone for an answer.
"We," Hades started, but then he paused. "We want you to go back to the mortal world."
What?
