Third Person POV
Ben rubbed the back of his hand against his eyes to wipe away his sleepiness as he struggled to get out of bed after his alarm went off.
He was walking towards the bathroom when he realized that Man was not in the room.
Wait, did that mean that he didn't come back from the conference last night?
Ben grabbed his phone from the lamp stand beside the bed and tried to call Man.
After several rings his call was directed to Man's voice mail.
"P'Man, where are you? Please call me as soon as you get this message"
Ben felt that it was strange for P'Man not to call and leave any explanation as to why he could not make it back to the hotel last night.
After his shower, Ben put on his work clothes and tidied his hair, grabbed his phone once more and made his way to the hotel cafeteria for employees.
The cafeteria was in the basement but instead of pressing B on the number pad inside the elevator, Ben decided to press G for the ground floor.
Maybe, for some reason P'Man was unable to leave a message on Ben's phone, but hopefully he had left a message for him with Kathy, the night shift lobby receptionist.
Ben glanced at his watch just before stepping out of the elevator. It was a quarter before seven so for sure Kathy was still behind the counter.
Ben saw from afar as he approached the reception counter that there was no one at the desk. As Ben walked closer to the reception counter he noticed that the door to the lounge room behind the counter was slightly ajar. Maybe Kathy was there powdering her face before she made her way to the basement for a light breakfast before going home.
Ben pushed the door a little wider to peek inside.
He quietly backed away and then ran like crazy towards the exit that led to the stairs going down to the basement.
He fell in line behind one of the employees who was waiting for his turn to give his order to the kitchen staff behind the glass counter.
"Good morning, Ben!"
Ben turned around to see the assistant manager Tay approaching him with a bright and cheery smile.
Ben nodded and smiled weakly to acknowledge Tay's greeting.
"Are you alright?" Tay asked Ben when he noticed Ben's pale face and shaky hands.
Again Ben just nodded and tried to smile at Tay.
"You sure?" Tay asked, taking Ben's cold hands and squeezing them to radiate some warmth into them. "Where's Man? Is he still upstairs in your room?"
"I'm not sure..." Ben tried to keep his voice steady. "I left the room quickly because I didn't want to be late in clocking in for work."
"He's probably on his way down to join us for breakfast." Tay said, trying to shake the feeling that there was something wrong going on with Ben.
When their turn came to give their orders to the kitchen staff, Tay ordered a bowl of hot cereals and a cup of mixed fruit on the side. He also ordered a cup of coffee with hazelnut cream and two packets of sugar.
"Are you sure that's all you're having for breakfast?" Tay raised an eyebrow at Ben when all that Ben ordered was a cup of hot jasmine tea.
"My stomach is feeling a bit queasy right now," Ben confessed to Tay. "This jasmine tea is going to calm it down."
"Okay," said Tay as he followed Ben to a corner table.
After breakfast, before parting ways, Tay reminded Ben to meet with the head of the housekeeping department to get a list of the items that needed replenishment and to call the suppliers to make the delivery before the weekend.
Ben said he would.
Just before the end of breakfast, Ben's phone had started ringing. He quickly muted it when he noted from the ringtone that it was P'Man calling.
Ben was in the middle of his meeting with the head of housekeeping when his phone started ringing again. P'Man was calling again. Ben quickly muted it and calmly went on with his meeting, making sure that he had written down on his note pad all the items that needed replenishment.
His meeting with the head of housekeeping was nearly finished when the door of his office opened.
Man was about to step in when he noticed that Ben was in the middle of a meeting with the head of the housekeeping department.
"Can you please come up to my office when your meeting is over, Ben?" Man asked from the doorway.
"Yes, sir," Ben nodded and continued to review the list that he had made with the head of housekeeping.
Man was about to walk away when he realized that Ben had addressed him as 'sir'.
What the hell was that all about.
Man went back to his office. He was for sure going to take that absurdity up with Ben later. Was that absurd behavior connected with Ben's not answering his calls?
