Chapter 8

I closed the zipper on my bag and looked out the window of my room. I felt a new sense of energy, something I'd been void of since the day I'd woken up.

I didn't know the cause of it. Maybe, it was the excitement of what this day could hold. The truth. The answer to all the questions I had been asking myself incessantly. What really happened that night?

Those answers would give me the closure I need to move forward with my life.

"Are you ready?" Axel asked, peeping inside the room.

"Yep," I said. Axel walked me out of the house and to the garage, where my driver stood.

"We can just take my bike," Axel offered.

"That would be a lot of driving for you," I said. "Besides, have you seen the weather? We'll need the air conditioning"

"I can't argue that," he nodded as we got into the back seat.

"Where would you like to go, Ms Henderson?" the driver asked as he buckled his seat belt.

"To Lake Albert," I said to which he nodded.

"Are you alright?" Axel questioned after we'd crossed a few blocks.

"Why do you ask?" I gulped.

"You- um, look like you're going to puke," he said.

"I'm just- a little nervous I guess," I sighed. "All my excitement kind of turned into anxiousness as soon as we left our neighbourhood"

"Well then, it's a good thing you have me," he puffed his chest.

"How are you going to help?" I asked.

"Oh, please, don't look so disgusted," he rolled his eyes. "I can be helpful when I want to be"

"We'll see when we get there," I mocked.

"We definitely will," he smirked.

I gazed outside the car's window. We were nearing the end of Crystal Falls and about to step into a completely new territory, to a place where I had no power or privilege, a place where I'd been vulnerable once before. This time it'll be different.

"We crossed the border," Axel announced to no one. I suppose he'd grown bored of sitting in silence.

"Do you want some music?" I asked.

He rolled his eyes. "If you'd made this offer an hour ago, I would've agreed"

"You could've initiated it" I commented.

"I-I'm shy," he defended to which I scoffed.

"We're here, Mr Henderson," my driver said as he dropped us off at the end of a road. "Cars aren't allowed any further than this, so you'll have to walk"

"Alright," I said. "wait for us here,"

I nudged Axel's shoulder and we exited the car.

"Well, we're at the lake," Axel announced, to no one again.

"We need to find that chalet," I bit my lip. "but the guy from the office said there were many chalets in this area, so how will we know where to go?"

"You know I was there when the search team found you, right?" Axel said, giving me a weird look.

"Oh, yes!" I exclaimed. I'd completely forgotten that I saw Axel in that news report. "Come, lead the way,"

He smirked, "this is why you need me,"

"Shut up," I said as I followed him through a path.

"So, I don't remember the exact route," Axel said meekly. "But when I see the chalet, I'll know"

"Right..." I trailed off.

"Don't worry," he reassured. "the chalets are all grouped together in a kind of cluster. So once we see one of them, we'll see them all"

"Sounds good," I said. "So which route did the cops use to find me?"

"The cops used the cameras in Crystal Falls to know that you left the border. After that, the cops began investigating and told us they narrowed the zone down. When we reached here, the search dogs found you"

"The cops never mentioned how they narrowed down the zone?" I inquired.

"They might have to your parents, but I never asked because of all the tension surrounding that search and then there was your coma and it just never felt important" he shrugged.

We walked through a narrow path until I suddenly yelled "Is that a chalet?"

Axel swirled around and squinted his eyes. "Yes, it is! Let's go closer"

We walked forward and saw a vast block of chalets, yet the place looked deserted.

"The place was been like this for about a hundred years, that's what the locals told us," Axel explained upon seeing my face.

"And the houses still survived?" I asked, impressed.

"I was surprised too"

"Which chalet was it?" I asked. He led us into the cluster, all houses were almost identical, down to the number of stairs on the porch, the wood, the ventilation system, the type of plants kept outside, all of it

"This place must've been some kind of cult," I murmured.

"A cult whose meeting you attended apparently," he chuckled.

"The place has been deserted for a hundred years, doofus"

"Oh, right," he shrugged. "I forgot about that. Anyway, this is the chalet"

Taking one look at it, sent a chill down my spine. It was the only chalet that looked different from the others. This one, had no curtains, no flowers on the porch, and had three stories instead of just two.

I know I'd seen this place on the news once before, but being here felt a lot different. My palm instinctively clasped the arm that had been bleeding.

"Are you ok?" Axel asked.

"I'll be fine," I said bravely. "Let's go inside"

We lightly prodded on the door, making it fling backwards with a long, loud creaking sound. Since it was only afternoon, there was plenty of sunlight, eliminating our need for a torch. The interiors looked just as depressing as the exterior. A layer of dust on the floor had been formed over the years.

"These are the footprints of the police and paramedics who searched the area" he explained. "And those," he pointed a little further "are the paw prints of the search dog"

"This place hasn't been visited once for investigation purposes since?" I asked.

"Doesn't seem like it," he mumbled taking a look at the house. "looks exactly the same way as I last saw it five years ago"

"Where exactly was my body?" My eyebrows creased.

"See that room there?" I nodded. "You were in there"

I cautiously stalked to the room, opening the door. Thankfully, this one creaked less. My breath stopped short when I saw the white chalk markings made, depicting the exact position in which my body was.

My knees suddenly felt weak and the room started to feel smaller than it was a few seconds ago. My vision became blurry and fell to the floor with a thud.

I found myself outside the chalet once again, this time, however, it was pitch black.

Another vision.

A woman wearing a long purple gown, with a matching cloth to cover her face.

"Who's there?" I stuttered upon hearing her noise.

"What's your name?" she asked, ignoring my question.

"Sadie Reyes" I lied.

"Come inside," she said taking my hand, to which I didn't refuse.

"Irene?"

I woke up in Axel's arms, a look of worry plastered on his face.

"Another vision?" he asked to which I nodded.

"I think the visions are triggered by something," I coughed.

"What do you mean?" he asked, bringing a bottle of water near me.

"I've been at home these past few days, which is why I didn't experience a single vision" I explained after drinking a sip. "But as soon as I came here, I got a flash of that night, in this place"

"What did you... see?" he asked hesitantly.

"I have no idea," I whimpered. "I have a lot of information in my head but have no idea how to make sense of any of this"

Axel stood in silence, not knowing what to do or say.

"There was an old woman, in my vision, wearing all purple and she- she gave me her hand and led me inside this place" I tried to explain. "I mean, why would I walk in with some random woman, in this random place? It's almost as if I wanted to die"

"Hey, come on," Axel said coming closer to me. "we both know that's not true"

"You have another explanation?"

"No," he admitted. "But I know you'd never give up on your life like that because that's not the Irene I know. And I know nothing makes sense at the moment and it doesn't need to. But you need to believe that in time, you'll make sense of everything"

"What if I don't like what I find out?" I asked.

"Then you scream, cry, lock yourself in your room, do whatever you need to do to accept the reality. Even if that's something you don't like"

I looked at Axel blankly, not knowing how to respond to his advice.

"Look, whatever happened happened, and it happened a long time ago. There's no use crying about it now. Just learn from your mistakes and move on"

I nodded, feeling a new sense of positivity.

"Thanks, Axel," I hugged him. "it really is a good thing I have you"

"See, I told you you'd see my worth soon enough" he whispered. "Do you think you'll be ok to continue investigating?"

"I don't think so," I shook my head. "Let's just get lunch and go home"

Would I need to come here again for an investigation? Probably. But at that moment, I decided to live in the present instead of dwelling on the past. I would certainly not stop till I got my answers, but I also needed to make sure I didn't lose everything I currently had.

And that included fixing my relationship with my parents.
