LOLA COLLYMORE FOUND DEAD AT 73
by Marie Williams September 12, 2023
The world of rock'n'roll mourns the legend known as Lola Collymore, born Elizabeth Collymore. Lola's wife – Isabella Garcia – reported her death in the early morning of September 12. She said her wife died during the night, peacefully, surrounded by her family. Lola was 73 years old.
I had the opportunity to speak to Lola in the early months of this year's spring, in a tiny apartment in New York City where Lola kept her old pieces of work. The room still smelt like cigarettes straight from the seventies, painting and photos hung high on her walls. We spoke of her family, her life in recent months, about her music. In her eyes you could see the warmness whenever I mentioned how I grew up with her music. We had to touch some (recent) news of Lola's health. While she and her family tried to keep the state of her health private, some gossip magazines spread the information of the singer being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
"I've spent my whole life giving every piece of me to the public," said Lola that day, "Everyone knew everything – my love life, my family life, conspiracy theories about me sexuality. Everything I ever had was the publics. And, for one time in my life, I hoped that this would be just mine. That no one would know about it. Not that I would be embarrassed of it, of course no. It's a disease. I can't prevent it; I couldn't do it. But just the idea of the world knowing I'm sick – I don't want to walk around, people looking at me with pity and – and sadness. It's not who I am. I was put on the world to bring joy and happiness to people. That's what I was doing with my music. But, God forbid, I have a secret."
Not only was Lola a key point to the Alzheimer's disease awareness, she was also very vocal about Lupus – a disease her friend Camila Dunne was diagnosed with and, sadly, passed away December 1 2012, a decade before she was joined by Lola. She gained more than three million dollars to help research both diseases.
In the late August of this year, Lola made her last live appearance for People Magazine where she announced she is taking a step away from the social life, the famous life. She moved to San Francisco with her wife Isabella, frequently being visited by Isabella's daughter Nora – about who Lola spoke so kindly about and with so much love (We talked about how she's doing in collage, how much of a great student she is, how happy she is in New York).
But – most of people – know Lola Collymore as the sex symbol of the 70s. She started as a solo singer with original songs such as Shooting Star, Lovesick, Strangers. She was then introduced to the band The Dunne Brothers for who she wrote Susie Q. Lola stayed by the side of the band, even after being renamed Daisy Jones & The Six after Daisy Jones joined the band. Many of you know Lola from the gossips spreading from the 70s and on – her infamous (alleged) affairs with Daisy Jones. Though both denied the rumours.
Lola Collymore was more than just a sex symbol or a singer that broke charts with songs such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Tiny Dancer, Your Song and Border song, she was a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a friend. She spent the last few years of her life talking (and encouraging conversations) about Alzheimer's disease and Lupus as well as her experience as a lesbian in the 70s period in the USA.
Lola Collymore, you were more than just a symbol of the 70s, more than your songs, more than your love life. You were an inspiration to many – especially young girls who grew up stuck to their televisions watching you speak about women and their rights, about how they are allowed to dream, to accomplish everything they think of. You will be missed by millions.
But – as you sang in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – you have decided that your future lies beyond the yellow brick road.
To her family and closed ones, I send my deepest condolences.
LOLA
I love you.
(silence)
I love you.
DAISY
Stop.
NOTES.
- Lola was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease so please do your research on the disease if you end up writing this!!
- I basically stole every Elton John song for her😜
- she meets the Dunne brother's because she works in a bar they once sung. Billy is all smitten by her – not just because she's hot as fuck – but also because she's going through the same addictions as he is
- Lola goes different way and isn't in contact with them until she's brought by a music producer to them because he thought one of her songs might work with them. But this time, they're not the Dunne Brothers anymore but Daisy Jones & The Six
- Lola instantly falls in love with Daisy (or so she thinks). They both go through this spiral of love, sex, drugs, alcohol and addiction
- Through this, Lola meets Isabella Garcia – a single mom who works as a waitress in a local bar. Lola is torn between the feelings she has for Daisy and what she feels for Isabella. But Isabella gives her an ultimation – get sober or forget about her. Lola decides for the second option
- and just a bunch of Lola dealing with being a lesbian in the 1970s as a rock'n'roll singer!!
- Lola never officially joins the band but she just hangs out around them a lot. She's a solo singer who sings a few songs with the band
- In my head, Lola wrote Your song about Daisy, Thank you for all your loving about Camila and Tiny Dancer about Isabella
- I need, need, NEED to see Lola being close with Camila and how she tells her about the struggles with her being a lesbian
- Lola ends up choosing sobriety. Isabella comes to one of her concerts with her daughter and Lola sees them in the crowd while she performs high. She usually ended her setlist with Your song but she decides to sing Goodbye yellow brick wall (which her band doesn't know so she sings acapella). And the song symbolises her saying goodbye to drugs, alcohol, all of that
- Lola is very close with Julia and really wants to help her write the book
- Whatever happens with Daisy and Lola is up to you!! I just feel like they would meet years later when Lola is sober and Daisy isn't and she wants to help her and Daisy gets all defensive, saying she doesn't need help (especially not from her) and asks her why she wants to help and Lola is just like "because I fucking love(d) you!" just angst angst angst
