Sunrise

They had past the night in conversation, talking about anything and everything. As she sat on his tomb huddled in his worn coat the faintest hint of sunrise began to lighten the sky. The rain had stopped and the sunrise was certainly going to be one to behold.

He nodded to the lightening sky. "Would you care to take a walk down by the river to see the sunrise?"

She peered out into the coming morning, then smiled at him. "I'd love that! I only wish I had my camera."

He pushed the gates open then gestured grandly as she scrambled off the tomb and made her way to the door. It was the closest they had been together. He having kept his distance as to not alarm her. Standing beside him she realized how tall he was. The closer she inspected him she was able to see the faint flicker of his form. Where he had appeared solid in the darkness she could see the wavering above his collar and the faintest transparency of his hands.

"If I touched you?" She began.

"I fear your hand would go right through me." He replied, stepping away from her and out on the paved pathway.

She followed him out of the tomb and into the faint light. Following him down the path she could hear the crunch of frost as she walked. The nip of the night lingering, causing her breath to fog in puffs of air. "So you can't leave the graveyard?" She asked hesitantly.

" I can't cross the iron gates, but nothing stops me from hopping the stone walls. If I stray too far I simply close my eyes and I'm back in the tomb. I've gone as far as the capital of the Confederacy, but can't seem to go much further. Nor can I cross the river, about halfway I get pulled back to my tomb."

"That doesn't seem fair." Lacey mused as she struggled to keep pace with him.

He looked back over his shoulder, surprised at her short gasps of air. He slowed his pace considerably.

"Sorry, " she gasped gratefully. "Cardio isn't exactly my strong suit. Plus... Ya know the stones." She gestured to the gravestones that he so easily floated through, even as he appeared to walk. She had to weave around them, watching for uneven ground and loose gravel that threatened to send her sprawling to the ground.

"My apologies." He said formally, "I'm so used to going at my own pace. If I were a gentleman I'd offer you my arm." He said self depreciatingly. A sad smile tugging at his lips.

They continued on, reaching a small white chapel that was open on both sides. The walls were smooth marble, the two foot by two foot sections that lined the walls with military like precision identified it as another, newer maueseleum. There were several benches evenly spaced throughput facing beautiful stained glass windows that flanked a large archway that revealed a breathtaking view of the James River.

Lacey had been here before, but never in the early twilight, and certainly never with a ghost. "It's beautiful." She whispered as the sun broke over the horizon in an explosion of purples and pinks that cast the river into a swirling riot of color. The effect so magical that it stole her breath.

John's eyes remained upon her face as he watched the colors touch her lovely red hair. "Aye beautiful." He whispered.
