59. Turned Cold
Later in the morning, Reese and David pulled up to the cabin. Jade ran out the door to them and jumped in excitement. Savana was less excited. She was still tired since Jade woke her up that morning. She only got about four hours of sleep.
After the girls went to bed, Wade texted Savana to let her know if she couldn't fall asleep, she could return to keep him company. So once Savana heard Jade's breathing slow, she quietly climbed down the bunk's ladder and crept through the dark cabin to reach the side door.
Wade and Savana sat by the dying fire for a few more hours. He didn't say much as he listened to Savana answer the dozens of questions he had about her life. She appreciated him showing interest in her life, but she felt a little embarrassed from essentially trauma dumping on him. She felt that Wade knew more about her than most people now. It was crazy to think they'd only known each other for such a short time for them to become so close.
Once outside in the bright sunlight, Savana shielded her eyes with one hand and sluggishly waved at Reese with the other. She noticed his uncle David unloading his truck and could tell the family resemblance almost instantly. Part of her joked to herself that David must have had an affair with Reese's mom and is actually his dad. They both had the same curly red hair, big smile, and body build. Tall and strong-looking. Two big teddy bears.
Savana smirked as Reese walked up to her. His arms opened up for a hug. He was always so friendly with her. And so comfortable to be around. It was nice to have a guy friend like that.
Just as Reese's arms started to wrap around Savana, his uncle shouted.
"Ah! A fresh face! You must be the girl Reese keeps talking about!" David laughed loudly.
Reese dropped his arms, his face red. He turned to David. "You're so embarrassing." He grumbled and walked to his uncle's truck to grab his things.
"What did I say?" David chuckled and gave a knowing look to Brad and Wade. Brad laughed as he opened the front door for David.
Wade shook his head without any amusement shown on his face. He walked past Savana and placed his large hand on her head to ruffle her curly bedhead.
"Didn't sleep?" Wade winked.
"Nope." Savana blushed.
Jade stepped forward. "I told her it gets cold at night in the cabin. Should have brought more layers. You can borrow one of my sweaters tonight."
Savana looked at Jade and smiled, though guilt flowed through her. "Sure, thanks."
After Reese and David settled in, Jade announced it was time to hit the lake for some fishing and swimming. Everyone spread out to get things prepared.
Everyone ended up waiting for the girls to come out of the cabin. They eventually came outside with tank tops and shorts over their swimsuits. Savana was surprised to see Reese only wore his green and black striped swim trunks. His freckles were not only on his face but also on his shoulders and chest. Speaking of, he definitely had the build of a football player.
"'Holy cow." Savana whispered to herself. It would be the first time swimming with Reese.
She looked around and noticed Wade wasn't standing with everyone else. Though he was at the lake in Sumner, he didn't swim with them. She wondered what he looked like in his swim shorts.
Not two seconds later, Wade stepped from around the corner of the cabin with no shirt on. Savana thought Reese looked good, but Wade looked even better. Though he also had red hair and blue eyes, there was something different about his looks. He looked more seductive and thrilling. When she looked at Reese, she felt comfort and warmth. At Wade, she felt pure arousal and excitement.
He wasn't as tall as Reese, but his muscles and jawline were more defined. His eyes sparkled as his dimples deepened the bigger he smiled.
"Oh fuck." Savana groaned to herself, hoping no one else heard her. But she couldn't stop it from escaping her mouth.
In a daze, Savana failed to notice everyone leaving for the lake with their fishing poles and tackle boxes in hand. The roaring sound of an ATV grabbed her attention. She watched as Brad and David each drove ATVs down the gravel driveway. Then she turned when she heard shouting from behind her. It was Wade driving on another ATV towards her.
"You want a ride?" He shouted over the loud rumbling machine.
Savana looked over at Jade and Reese walking together and looked back at the ATV. She was suddenly caught off guard by the memory of Damon's story about his cousin getting into that accident Landon got her in. Then, memories of Landon and Damon ambushed her. Suddenly, the thought of getting so close to another man again left a sour taste in her mouth.
Savana shrugged her shoulders awkwardly. "Nah, I'm good." She ran to catch up to the others. Stepping alongside Reese, she watched Wade race down the road on the ATV.
It was about a ten-minute walk to the lake. Though it was a gorgeous summer day, no one else was there. It seemed Brad and his friend's cabin was the only one around. At least the only one with people that weekend.
Goosebumps covered Savana's arms once she finally got a good look at the beautiful scene before her. The lake reminded her of Lake Maiden in Unity, a modest size with luscious plant life. But this place seemed more untouched.
It was more peaceful without cars driving by or the sound of water crashing down a dam. The only sounds were birds singing, the men casting their fishing poles, and Reese and Jade quietly gasping at two ducks waddled not three feet away. There wasn't a care in the world in this place. The air smelt fresher and felt lighter than anything Savana had experienced before.
Jade and Reese continued walking to a picnic table off the shore and laid out towels on it. Jade stripped down to her blue one-piece swimsuit and tied her hair up. Savana was suddenly too excited to swim that she stripped down to only her red bikini without thinking.
"Hey, what happened there?" Reese asked as he looked down at Savana's leg.
It took a second for her to realize what he could have been talking about. She looked down at the small red cut on her thigh. "Oh, just my cat." Savana flipped her wrist and showed the wound on her palm. "My cat, Hannibal, likes to beat me up sometimes." She let out a light chuckle.
"Ouch." Reese frowned.
"I hate cats." Wade walked up to them. "They're just assholes. At least you can train dogs to do what you want."
Something about what he said made Savana's stomach twitch. She loved cats and dogs and couldn't imagine a good reason to hate them.
"Yeah, dogs are more fun." Jade smiled before turning to run into the water.
"Come on!" Reese gestured for Savana to follow them.
Savana waved that awkward conversation away and decided to take advantage of being in such a gorgeous place. She ran after them into the lake. They all splashed around and dove under. Savana and Jade laughed as Reese did handstands to see how far he could walk with his hands underwater. Savana was having a lot of fun with them. All her worries seemed to disappear for the time being. Reese would pick the girls up one at a time and toss them into the water.
As time went on, clouds rolled in, and it became windy. They could hear the men on shore fighting with their fishing lines getting snagged in the nearby trees hanging over the water.
Savana shivered in the water. The wind was so cold.
"You cold?" Reese asked as he slowly swam closer.
"Y-y-eah." Savana chuckled with her arms wrapped around herself.
"Come here. I'm just a big ol' heater." Reese smiled and rubbed his hands down her arms.
She shivered again, thinking about how he actually was warm. It was nice.
"Aw, it's not that cold!" Jade laughed. "I've swam in colder weather." She continued to swim around and swirl a stick in the water.
The cold didn't seem to faze her, or she was trying to impress everyone by not complaining. Savana wouldn't feel bad if Jade got a cold after this.
Reese noticed Savana still quivering and wrapped his arms around her. His hugs were the coziest hugs she's ever gotten. She couldn't help but snuggle her face into his chest, accepting his warm embrace.
"Hey! Get out of the water! Ya gonna catch a cold! We're heading back!" Wade shouted from the edge of the water.
Savana looked up from Reese's hug and blushed as she realized everyone saw them embracing each other. She saw Wade standing there, and it looked like he was glaring at them.
