57. Bunk Beds

The first day at Jade's cabin had finally come. Savana clutched her phone in the back seat of Brad's truck. She couldn't sit still. Her eyes darted between the window and her phone screen. Jade didn't notice Savana being distracted as she continued telling funny stories of what had happened at the cabin in previous summers.

"Then Wade had to unwrap the leash from my ankle. But the dog kept jumping and circling around us." Jade laughed.

At Wade's name, Savana perked up.

"So do you know if Tess is going to be up there this weekend?" Savana asked.

Though she and Wade had texted each other the last two days, she couldn't bring herself to ask him about Tess. She felt so awkward texting him like that. It was so out of the blue. She assumed Jade gave him her number.

Savana didn't know what to think about Wade. They only saw each other in person one time. And exchanged a few texts. But somehow, she felt a connection to him. The way he smiled at her when they were introduced. He seemed genuinely excited that she was staying with him at the cabin. With all of them.

The reminder of him having a girlfriend slapped the backside of her head. Savana was getting too full of herself. He lived with another woman. Probably getting married, from what Sydney told her. That confused Savana even more. She saw how Wade and Tess acted at the lake. Tess hated being there. Wade hated her being there. How could they be together?

"No, she rarely comes up. She probably will on the fourth of July, though. We have a big fish cookout, and everyone brings their families up here." Jade smiled and looked toward her dad, driving.

"Yup, there's an annual fishing contest the weekend before the fourth of July. We catch as much as we can and cook it. Luckily, this year, the fourth is on a Sunday, and the contest is that Saturday." Brad smiled at Savana in the review mirror.

Savana had only met Brad a couple of times before. She suspected he was also warned of Savana's depressing mood. Brad had been kind and patient with Savana. Her nerves calmed for a moment until her phone buzzed again.

Another message from Wade. She waited for his reply to let her know he was at the cabin. Savana jumped when she realized there was a picture attached. Heat rose in her cheeks as she eagerly opened the message.

Savana's heart fluttered when she saw the picture. He took a picture of himself standing in front of the cabin door. The picture's caption said, "Here's your home for the summer! Can't wait!"

Jade noticed Savana smiling at her phone. "Who are you texting?"

"Oh, Wade sent me a message." Savana smiled, not thinking.

When Jade reached for her phone, she noticed Wade had also messaged her. She giggled as she saw the same picture Savana saw.

"Did he send you the same picture?" Jade asked as she held her phone up for Savana to see.

A small wave of disappointment clouded Savana's mind. "Yup, yup."

It was a quiet drive until they turned onto a road that led to the cabin. A lush, green forest of pine and oak surrounded them as they drove. As the sun shone through the trees, it cast a golden light on the winding road. The sides of the road were dotted with wildflowers, popping with vibrant colors.

Jade got jittery the closer they got to the cabin. Eventually, a lake came into view from the road.

"There's the lake! The cabin is just a little further down the road. We can walk to the lake at any time!" Jade bounced in her seat.

Savana didn't get much of a look at the lake before her view was filled with trees again. She suddenly wanted to look at herself in the mirror.

Savana's heart raced as the truck turned into the gravel driveway leading to the cabin. A moment later, she saw Wade looking even more handsome than in the picture. She was filled with excitement and nervousness.

Brad parked the truck in front of the front porch and started grabbing bags and fishing equipment out of the back. Jade hopped down and held her pink camouflage back up. Savana swung her duffel bag over her shoulder as she stepped down on the gravel. She faced Wade as he walked down the three porch steps to her and Jade.

He grinned at Jade and held his hand out. Jade giggled and handed him her backup. She looked at Savana. "Wade has carried my bag into the bedroom and put it on the top bunk for me every year since I was little. Back then I was too scared to climb to the top bunk. But now I can climb up there no problem!"

"So now, every start to the summer, I have to find a different place to hide it from her." Wade swung her back up over his shoulder. He smirked at Savana and held out his hand again. "Now it's your turn."

Savana hesitated; she wasn't sure what he would do with her stuff. Wade slowly stepped forward, and his hand brushed against her shoulder. He leaned in with the smirk still spread across his face.

"I'll take this." He whispered in Savana's ear. Goosebumps covered her arms suddenly. He grabbed her bag and slung it over his other shoulder. The girls watched him walk up the steps again and lightly kicked the front door open with his boot. He turned to them again. "After you." He smiled.

Savana could tell from his warm, kind eyes that he was genuinely interested in her, and she smiled to herself as the heat rose to her cheeks again.

Jade led the way to the first bedroom. The walls had wood paneling, pictures of lakes and boats, and only one small high-up window. The carpet was dark blue. There were two bunk beds, a small round table, two chairs, and a closet. "This is the kid's room."

Wade scoffed. "Soon enough we'll call it something else."

Jade stuck her tongue out at him and pointed across the hallway. "And that's the grown-up room. The really old people sleep there." She laughed mockingly.

Wade rolled his eyes and stepped into the first room behind us. He studied the bunk beds before throwing Savana's bag on the top bunk in front of the window.

"Hope you're not afraid of heights." Wade winked at Savana.

"Not at all." Savana smirked as she swiftly climbed onto her new bed.

"Good." Wade smiled and glanced at Jade. "Now, you stay here until I find a spot for your bag." He laughed and ran out the door with Jade's backpack.

"Hey!" she shouted.

Savana laughed. "Does he really do that every year?"

"Yeah, he usually puts it up in a tree. He knows I'll ask him to get it for me every time." Jade smiled as she sat on the bottom bunk.

A few minutes later, Wade ran back into the room. "There. Go on and find it now." He said, catching his breath and patting Jade's shoulder.

She jumped up from her bed and ran out the door without hesitation. It was like a race for them. Even though they knew how it would end.

After Jade shut the cabin's front door, Wade looked up at Savana.

"So, what do ya think?" He stepped forward and placed a hand on the ladder against the bunk bed. His hands were large and a bit rough-looking. Hardworking hands.

"So far, so good, I guess." Savana shrugged her shoulders as she opened up her duffel bag.

She tried hard not to look at him. It was awkward being in the room alone with him.

Wade stepped closer, another hand on the ladder, and suddenly, he stepped up. He glanced around her bed and noticed her open bag. She rummaged through her stuff and unknowingly pulled out her bikini and other underthings and tossed them on the bed.

Wade coughed. "Well now, the lake will be more entertaining this year." He chuckled as he stepped back down from the ladder.

Savana felt relieved that he wasn't so close anymore. But then she noticed the revealing clothes she tossed out in front of her. Her face reddened, and she quickly put everything back inside her duffel bag.
