50. Prom - Pt. 1
It was finally prom night. Savana and Faye got ready at Cully's house. Savana felt relieved to hear that her dad wasn't home much anymore. Michael was mainly at work or with his brother. Maureen continued to work late or go on business trips. Troy stayed at Nick's house most of the time. Cully felt divorce became inevitable at that point. It was like torture.
Savana and Cully were surprised when Faye told them who her prom date was. Savana was happy for Faye, but Cully avoided the subject. Cully barely even liked to talk about Chase anymore.
They finished their hair and makeup and strolled to Cully's car in glamorous dresses. Chase and Ezra agreed to meet them at school instead of picking them up. Cully and Faye insisted they get ready with Savana and drive to the dance with her. They felt sorry for her not having a date at a school dance again. But they were happy she broke things off with Landon.
Students dressed in tuxedos and gowns packed the school parking lot. The three girls walked toward the school entrance and searched for their dates.
"Hey!" Chase shouted out to them from the crowd.
Cully smiled at Chase in his grey tuxedo and red tie. He looked very handsome and surprisingly chipper. She picked his suit to match her fire-red ballgown.
The girls walked up to Chase, and soon Ezra found them.
"Hello ladies." Ezra smiled at them. "Looking great!"
Cully blushed and looked away. Faye and Savana smiled and thanked him.
Faye and Ezra had talked more about things since their shocking discovery. It became less awkward for them. They decided to wait to reveal their sibling relationship to their friends.
Luckily, Ezra still had his old tuxedo from his high school prom. It was a simple black tux, which Faye thought complemented her black sequined strapless dress. They looked like they were going to a formal ball instead of a high school prom. A lot of the students gathered around were gazing at them and whispering. Cully felt a tinge of jealousy.
Savana didn't want any attention on her. She was already embarrassed to go without a date. But she loved how her auburn hair looked with her spring green floor-length dress.
They all walked inside and headed for the gym. Music started playing. Teachers and chaperones were standing on the sidelines, chatting with each other.
"Oh look!" Cully leaned over to Savana and pointed to a corner of the decorated room.
Savana followed Cully's waving finger and spotted a handsome figure beside Mr. Fillens.
"Damn." Savana said under her breath.
Damon noticed Savana looking over at him and waved at her. He wore a black tuxedo as well. Savana smiled and waved back.
Savana then looked at Ezra questionably.
"I told him if I had to go, he had to." Ezra laughed. "Though, it seemed like he had already planned for it."
Savana never thought of Damon being at the dance. She wished she had known sooner. She smacked Ezra's arm.
"Ow! What was that for?" Ezra rubbed his arm.
"Because." Savana glanced back to where Damon stood. He smiled at her again and continued his conversation with Mr. Fillens.
The group sat at a table to settle in and drink more of the typical school dance punch. As the dance continued, Chase and Ezra took turns dancing with Savana during some slow songs. Dancing with Chase wasn't as awkward as homecoming. And, of course, it didn't faze Savana when dancing with Ezra.
"So, what's up with you and Faye now?" Savana asked Ezra as they danced.
"Oh, um, nothing really." Ezra acted suspiciously.
"So you're not dating then?" She asked.
"What? No. J-just... never mind." Ezra said quietly.
Savana was about to ask him more about it but was interrupted.
"Can I cut in?" Damon asked.
A lump got caught in Savana's throat as she tried to answer. Ezra answered for both of them.
"Go ahead!" Ezra grinned and ran off the dance floor.
Savana wondered why Ezra acted so strangely as she watched him run to their table. Damon's hand on hers made her jump.
"Heh, are you nervous? You looked like you knew how to dance earlier." Damon smiled down at her and stepped closer.
Savana was surprised by how close he stood in front of her. She looked up at him and felt her cheeks burn. "Ha, no! I just didn't expect you to want to dance with me."
"Why not? We're at a dance. And we're friends, right?" Damon smiled.
"Right." Savana smiled.
"Something surprised me, though. I thought you would have brought a date." Damon was curious why she was the only one of her friends without a date. He figured she would have been asked by lots of guys. Even he's heard whispers in the hallways of some male students talking about how beautiful she is.
"Oh, well, I was going to but it didn't work out." Savana looked down at her feet. She hoped she wouldn't step on his feet.
"I'm sorry to hear that. It's his loss." Damon squeezed her hand and twirled her around.
Savana giggled as she spun. "Yeah, I guess it is."
Faye walked out of the bathroom and headed back to their table. The only person sitting there was Ezra. She looked around the dance floor and saw Cully and Chase slowly dancing. Faye wondered where Savana was. She continued to scan the room and squealed when she saw Damon twirling Savana around. Many other students noticed them too.
Faye was thrilled. They looked so cute together. Much better than that jerk, Landon. On her way to the table, she was startled to see Haden appear in front of her.
"Jesus, Haden. Where did you come from?" Faye grabbed her heart and sighed.
"Sorry, I wanted to ask you for a dance." Haden smiled. He looked like a golden retriever in a tux.
"Oh, a-alright." Faye didn't expect to dance with anyone else besides Ezra.
Haden grabbed her hand and led her to the edge of the large crowd. He held onto her, and they danced. The song ended seconds after they started dancing. But another slow song started.
They talked about work and laughed at the chaos some dogs caused. It was the first time all night Faye was at ease. She worried about when and how to tell Savana and Cully about Ezra being her brother. Faye felt guilty for lying to them. She felt even more guilty after noticing the little looks Cully and Ezra gave each other. Faye knew there had to be something between them. They just never acted upon it.
The song ended, and Haden hesitated to let Faye go.
She smiled at him. "I should get back to the others. I don't want to leave Savana alone."
"Alright. Maybe another dance later?" Haden smiled shyly.
"Yes." Faye grinned and hugged Haden.
It surprised him, but he hugged her back briefly before she walked away.
The whole group was back at the table. Damon went back by the other chaperones. Savana couldn't believe how great of a dancer Damon was.
"Anyone want more punch?" Savana asked. She was parched.
Faye and Cully nodded their heads. Savana stood up and headed towards the punch bowl table on the other side of the gym.
She walked past the doorway that led into the hallway. She heard someone call her name. Savana turned and was shocked to see Landon step into the doorway. He waved at her.
"What the fuck?" Savana growled to herself.
