44. Field Trip

Savana's History class went on a field trip to the Clear Water County Natural History Museum. It was a warm, breezy day. The bus driver sped across the highway lanes. Savana imagined the bus crashing and killing everyone. She wondered if the school or the police would notify parents first.

Even on the bus, everyone was in their cliques. Popular kids were in the back, and non-popular ones were in the front. Behind the driver, Savana was in the front seat, next to Damon. She was the last on the bus, and it was the final spot to take.

Surprisingly, Cully and Faye sat beside each other behind Damon and Savana. She heard them snicker when she sat down next to him. She slowly turned to face them and glared. They both shut up.

It was Friday, the day before Savana's birthday. Traffic was insane, and it took longer to get there than usual. Savana couldn't wait to get the day over with. She was meeting up with Landon that night.

She was curious about what he had planned for her birthday and hoped it would turn out better than Valentine's Day. It would be the first night seeing each other in a week. It was also the last time they could see each other for two weeks. This weekend was Easter, and Savana would be with her family.

Once the class reached the museum, Mr. Fillens led everyone through the main lobby. They continued through smaller rooms and halls with pictures and displays. Savana wasn't paying attention. It didn't seem like Cully and Faye were either. The three of them were at the back of the group.

After around an hour, Mr. Fillens split up the group. A handful of students went with him, two other groups followed chaperones who volunteered for the trip, and the last group was led by Damon. Of course, Savana was in Damon's group. Cully and Faye were in separate groups.

Savana's group had only three other students. She had never talked to them before. The three of them were obviously close friends, though, and completely ignored Savana and Damon as they ventured outside to look at the dam.

A large river ran through most of the county. Savana had heard stories of people tubing down the river near the dam. People have died from drowning.

The sound of water crashing down the dam grew louder as Savana and Damon walked closer. There was a tall metal fence to prevent anyone from falling into the water. She leaned against the metal and sighed. The sound seemed peaceful to her.

"I wanted to let you know that you got an A on that quiz yesterday." Damon smiled at her as he put his hands into his grey coat pockets.

"Well, all thanks to you I guess." She smiled as she closed her eyes and pulled her hood up.

They stood there in silence a little longer before Damon started talking again.

"So, I realize you have been trying your best to avoid me. I just want to know why. I want to know if I did something wrong." He leaned on the fence next to her and studied her face.

She sighed again. She had long since forgiven Damon, especially with all the help he gave her. But she was still embarrassed to talk to him about it. Standing next to that dam wiped away her embarrassment and anxiety for some reason.

"I was mad at you for telling my dad to keep me away from Landon. I don't like it when people try to control me." She opened her eyes and looked at him.

Savana noticed how lighter his brown eyes looked. They twinkled and seemed to peer into her soul. She turned away from him.

"And I'm still embarrassed about what happened at that party." Her cheeks flushed as she looked down at her feet. "And what happened after the party." She mumbled.

Damon didn't know what to say about him talking to her dad about Landon. A smirk spread across his face as he remembered the last part she mentioned. "So, you do remember that. I assumed you were too drunk to recall anything."

"Hey! Don't ignore the first thing I said! That wasn't cool to talk to my dad about that." Savana glared up at him and waved her arms around.

Damon thought she looked cute when angry. "I'm not ignoring it. I just don't know what to say. I was worried about you. Worried Landon might hurt you or get you into trouble. "He's a bad influence." He said calmly.

"Oh, I see." Savana calmed down now.

"But, back to the other thing." Damon smirked again.

She groaned. "Do we have to? It's embarrassing. First, you practically see me naked. Second, I kissed you when you took me home." Her hands covered her red face.

"I gave you that hoodie." He laughed and nodded at what she was wearing.

"Yes," Savana mumbled as she fidgeted with the strings. She wouldn't admit how much she had worn it and hoped he didn't notice. It was so comfortable and warm.

Damon noticed it every time she wore it to school. "Good." He smiled as he looked over at the river. He felt relieved seeing Savana more like her old self. "So, that was why you ignored me this whole time?" He asked.

She hesitated. Part of her wanted to tell him about her and Landon, thinking it would prove him wrong about him. But she decided against it.

"Yup. But I'm not mad anymore. I just didn't know how to bring it up and talk to you again. Like we used to." She watched the river as well.

Suddenly, they both heard shouting and turned toward the museum doors.

"Come back in everyone! We're going to go through the souvenir shop and head out!" Mr. Fillens yelled out to their group.

Everyone headed into the shop and gathered around all the shelves and baskets of typical museum merchandise. Savana found Cully and Faye admiring some jewelry. Cully picked out a gold ring with a pink gemstone. Faye picked out a long leather string necklace with small grey feathers and blue beads.

"See anything you like?" Faye asked Savana as she put on her new necklace.

Savana glanced at everything. She didn't think she would find anything. She rarely wears jewelry.

Something caught her eye. A turquoise bracelet. Her mom, Bellamere, loved turquoise jewelry. Savana thought it was pretty and would make her feel closer to her mom. She picked it up and put it around her wrist.

"Oh, yes! That looks great on you!" Cully was excited that she had actually picked something.

Savana smiled at it but looked at the price. It was a bit more expensive than she wanted. She thought about how much money she had. Her wallet was in her jacket pocket. She took it out and opened it to see a surprise. She had no money.

"No!" She felt defeated. The bracelet would have been a lovely birthday present for herself.

"Aww, Savana, I'd get it for you but I just spent the rest of my money on my ring." Cully said.

"Same here." Faye felt sorry.

"It's okay guys. You know I don't wear that kind of stuff often anyway." Though she looked really disappointed. Cully and Faye weren't fooled.

Everyone was returning to the bus. After everyone sat down, Mr. Fillens told the driver to wait for another person. It looked like Damon was still inside.

A few minutes later, Damon was finally on. The bus driver took off and sped across the lanes back to the school again.

The bus ride back was quicker this time. Savana didn't feel as awkward sitting next to Damon. She tried to think of her date with Landon to get her mind off that bracelet. When they got back, the school day was ending. It was nice to have longer field trips and an excuse not to have to go to other classes.

The girls got off the bus and went to their cars in the large parking lot.

"Savana! Wait!" Damon called out.

Savana stopped and looked at the girls, who smirked. She rolled her eyes at them and walked back to Damon, who was standing next to the bus. Everyone else got off the bus before she walked up to him. The students scattered around the parking lot.

"What's up?" Savana asked as she bounced on her tiptoes. She just wanted to hurry up and go home.

"I have something for you." Damon smiled down at her. His eyes twinkled again.

She noticed he seemed excited. "What is it?"

Damon pulled out a small brown bag and pulled out the turquoise bracelet she wanted from the museum.

"I know it's your birthday tomorrow, and I saw you really wanted it." He watched her reaction, hopeful she would like it.

"Oh my god! No way!" Savana grabbed it from his hand and admired it. "You didn't have to do that Damon." She felt like crying.

"I didn't really know what I was going to do for your birthday, so when I saw you upset about not having money to buy it, I thought it was perfect." He smiled, satisfied with her reaction.

"Thank you." She lowered her voice and looked around to see if anyone had watched that scene.

"You're welcome." He winked and showed off his adorable dimples again. "Can I text you sometime?"

"Yes, anytime." Savana held the bracelet out for him to help her put it on. She glowed as he secured it on her wrist. "I love it."

By the time she drove home, she had almost forgotten about sneaking out later to meet Landon. She was relieved that Jade and her mom wouldn't stay over this weekend. Thank God they were spending Easter with their own family.
