12. Flowers On A Grave
As Landon pulled into the parking lot, he honked his horn and waved through the window.
"Fucking great," Savana growled as she turned to her friends. She and Faye were about to tell Cully more about what happened with Landon and Damon last night.
"What the fuck?" Damon narrowed his eyes at the black truck.
"He must have finished the store already. I figured my mom would have kept him longer." Ezra shrugged.
Cully looked confused. "Why would he be at your mom's store?"
"My mom gave him a job there," Ezra said.
Cully's eyes grew wide as she looked back at Savana. "Oh, my god. You have to work with him now?" She laughed.
Savana rolled her eyes. "Yeah, it's hilarious. Wait until you hear what happened last night."
"Yeah, what the fuck? Just tell me already!" She was super anxious to hear more. She scooted closer to Savana.
Damon stood up. "Well, I guess the party's over."
Cully looked up at him. "Why? Landon always shows up here."
"I'm not staying if he's here," Damon said.
"I'm not either." Savana stood up, dived off the raft, and swam to the beach. Damon jumped after her.
Cully looked at Faye and Ezra. "Okay, what the hell is going on?" she asked.
"Damon and Landon don't get along at all. There was a fight last night." Faye replied.
Cully looked at Ezra. Her voice was soft. "Is that why you have that bruise on your face?" She noticed the bruise when they got to the lake but didn't know how to ask about it.
Faye explained. "Landon was about to hit Damon but Ezra stepped in the way and got hit instead."
Ezra laughed and put his hand on his face. "Yeah, that's what happens when you get in between those two. Well, let's go!" He stood up and jumped into the water. The girls followed closely behind.
Landon sat in his truck and watched Savana swim towards the beach. He was frustrated seeing Damon with her again. He decided to wait until the rest of the group got to the beach before getting out of his truck. He waved and stepped down from his tall truck when they finally did.
Only Ezra waved back. Landon didn't remember much from last night, but he remembered hitting Ezra by mistake. He felt guilty and wanted to apologize.
Damon walked past Landon carrying the cooler. Their eyes met. It was as if they dared each other to say something. Neither said a word.
Savana put her clothes back on and grabbed her towel as Landon approached them. She wouldn't meet his eyes.
"You guys leaving?" Landon asked.
Ezra felt awkward leaving like that. "Um yeah, we have to take Savana home."
Landon frowned. "Hey, I'm sorry about last night. I don't remember much but I do remember hitting you. It's been rough lately." He looked down at the ground.
Ezra smiled and patted his shoulder. "I know man. It'll be alright. Just try to keep your cool around Damon alright? He's my friend too."
"I mean, I'll try, but he's the one who has a problem with me." Landon glared at Damon, who was returning from a red pickup truck.
Before Ezra could say anything, Cully interrupted. "Faye and I want to stay here for a while longer Ezra. Maybe after you drop off Savana you can come back and hang out?" She was desperate to hang out with Ezra more. She felt out of the loop since she wasn't at his house last night.
Ezra knew Damon didn't want to stay around Landon, but he wanted to hang out with the girls more. "Well, I'd like to hang out longer but it's up to Damon too since he rode with me." Ezra watched Damon walk over to them.
"Come on Damon! Come back to the lake and hang out with us!" Cully whined. Faye was getting annoyed with her.
Before Damon could say anything, Landon spoke. "I plan on staying with the girls. We'll have fun." He winked at them.
Cully rolled her eyes, and Faye looked at Damon nervously. He didn't have a choice now. He didn't trust Landon to be alone with them. "Alright, we'll be back." He turned and walked back to Ezra's truck.
Savana was shocked. She turned to the girls. "Okay, well, I'll message you guys later after dinner and you guys can come over."
"Okay, that's awesome!" Cully said. She knew she would finally hear what happened last night.
Faye was nervous about being alone with Landon, even for ten minutes. She didn't know what to do if he got out of control again. But at least he was sober this time.
As Ezra drove out of the parking lot, Savana noticed another black truck parked on the far side of the lot. It looked like the same truck that was there the other day too. She remembered seeing the figure standing in the trees. She then assumed it was someone fishing.
Savana turned her attention inside the truck and tried to get her right thigh off Damon's. "Ezra, can we stop at the cemetery first?"
Ezra looked at Savana and smiled. "Yeah, not a problem."
There was a second cemetery a few miles from Savana's house in the country. Across the road from the cemetery was a small white church. It wasn't used for church services regularly. It was only used for weddings or funerals. The town church was a few blocks from Lake Maiden. That's where most of Unity gathered on Sundays.
Ezra slowly pulled onto the dirt road that ran through the cemetery. They noticed two vehicles ahead of them. "Wait, that's my dad's truck. But I don't know whose car that is." Savana glanced at the other car.
"Do you want to go home?" Ezra asked.
"No, it's fine. I have to face him either way." Savana scooted towards the door, following Damon out of the truck.
He held out his hand to help her down even though the truck wasn't that high up. Savana awkwardly took his hand when stepping down. Her heart fluttered at the soft touch.
Ezra and Damon watched her walk toward her dad's truck and turn right through tall bushes. They couldn't see her once she got to the other side.
Once Savana got through the bushes, she saw her dad standing next to a woman in front of Bellamere's grave. At first, she thought it was Jesimae, judging by her dark hair. She stopped and watched them talk. She couldn't hear what they said. The woman turned her head to the side. Savana realized it wasn't Jesimae.
Suddenly, the fight with her dad popped into her head again. The woman must have been the one Gavin wanted to tell her about. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Savana spoke louder than she thought. She spun around and ran back to Ezra's truck. She knew they heard her.
Jacklyn looked up at Gavin. "Did you hear something?"
He had already turned around and spotted Savana scurrying away. "Ah shit. I'm sorry, I have to go. I figured Savana wouldn't be back until dinner time." Gavin apologized.
"It's alright. I understand. Talk to her and tell her we don't have to meet until she's ready." Jacklyn smiled.
"You're magnificent." Gavin kissed Jacklyn on the cheek and headed toward his truck.
Jacklyn stood at the grave longer. Her smile faded when Gavin left her sight. She turned to look at the headstone again. Gavin put Bellamere's favorite flowers, white daisies, on her grave. Jacklyn grabbed one of the daisies and pulled the petals out, one by one, as she walked back to her car.
