The Broken Batman

The heat effects people in different ways, some people are happy about it, others turn into complete an utter A-holes and I didn't expect to be stuck in the car with one...

"It's too damn hot." Zak complains in the front of the car.

"We are almost at the gas station, we will get out and get some supplies." Billy says looking at the navigation.

"Well how much further Billy? Damn you said that a few miles back."

I frown at Zak's tone as Billy answers "I didn't expect to take the wrong turn and get stuck in traffic. Just hold on dude."

Glancing over in the car, I find Aaron fast asleep with his head pressed against the window and neck in a bent position. Shaking my head, I unplug my belt, alerting not only Billy, but Zak too.

"What are you doing?" Zak bites looking at me as I turn on my seat and reach into the back to retrieve my bag.

"Nothing."

"Then sit your ass down and put your belt on."

I throw him a daggered look before pulling my bag back over the seat with me and plunking it onto the floor.

"Jesus Christ, you carry so much shit." He adds before yanking down his sun visor.

"Oh bite me."

"What did you say?" He fires back only to have Billy intervene.

"Enough. Chill. The both of you." He orders making me narrow my eyes in Zak's direction before diving my hand into my bag.

Since becoming part of the crew, Zak had made it his mission to be an absolute Jerk wad. Maybe he was intimidated by a woman joining the crew, he certainly made enough remarks about the screaming. However when it was shown that he was yelling and at the point of screaming like a little girl than what I was, he soon piped down.

My bag is in fact an overnight bag, large in its capacity and full of things I need. Maybe a few items that I don't. Well until now. With a wiggle around, I pull out the small travel pillow and get onto my knees, leaning over Aaron's sleeping frame to lift his head off the window carefully and placing the pillow between his head and the glass, straightening his neck and making it more comfortable.

"Sit the fuck down. You're gonna cause an accident. Billy watch the damn road!"

"I am!" He snaps back, finally having enough of Zak's shit.

Me too.

"Will you shut the hell up? God you do nothing but complain you entitled asshole." I fire back causing Zak to turn in his seat and gear up for a yelling match when the car makes a loud clunk and for Billy to start swearing.

"What was that?" I ask as I realise we are in the middle of nowhere, slowing down and with no other car in sight.

So much for a short cut...

"This thing is fried. Should have known when the aircon went bust.." He huffs pulling off the road.

"What the hell Billy? Stay on the road otherwise nobody is gonna find us." Zak moans.

"If I stay here, we will get wiped out by whatever comes around the bend suddenly. I know what I am doing and I am driving." He answers making me smirk.

"Whatever." Zak mutters pulling out his phone. "Fucking brilliant. No signal."

"This whole stretch of road is a dead zone." Billy mentions.

"Fitting." I mumble in the back as I look out the window at the silent road.

"Well what do we do?" Zak asks looking between us all.

"We wait or someone walks to the garage?" I suggest.

"It's the heat of the day. We can wait under these trees until it cools, otherwise you're gonna end up in hospital. Just open all the windows and doors." Billy replies.

I push my door open instantly and welcome some of the cooler air into the car, whilst Zak gets out to march up and down the road. Sitting forward, I look between the headrests and speak to Billy.

"He is really impatient huh?"

With a slight laugh Billy nods. "He is tired. That's all."

I shrug and sit back before diving into my bag and pulling out a bottle of water. Taking a mouthful, I pass it to Billy who accepts it and has a drink as well. Seconds later, Zak appears "Where did that water come from?"

"My bag." I answer.

"Have you got anymore?"

I shake my head "Last bottle. I drank the other one earlier."

"Well that was selfish." He replies making me laugh in surprise.

"I didn't know this would happen, did I?"

He mutters under his breath before sitting in his seat and stuffing a set of earphones in.

******

The heat only increases and we are at the stage of debating who is walking when Aaron mutters in his sleep.

"How the hell is he still asleep?" Zak asks turning in his chair to yell at Aaron to wake up.

"Leave him." I moan, having quiet liked the fact I am using Aaron's knee as a footstool.

"He needs to wake up and help. Billy try the car again." Zak orders.

We all wait in anticipation as he turns the key, only to be returned with splutters and the car giving up.

I delve into my bag again and take out a power bar and begin to unwrap it when Zak looks back at me. "Have you got anymore?"

"Only one."

He sighs harshly but soon quietens down when I pass two thirds of the bar into the front of him and Billy. A few minutes later, I'm cooling off with a cooling face mist spray and a hand held fan when he shoots me a glare.

"What the fuck?"

"It's getting too hot." I answer holding the battery operated fan in my face and sighing at the cool air.

"Well no shit. We are stuck in the middle of nowhere."

I ignore him and enjoy my fan a little longer. That is until he begins complaining again.

Throwing all caution to the wind, I sit forward, spray him in the face and hold the fan out in front of him. "Stop being a whiny bitch. You are doing my head in."

"Oh. Oh that's nice..." He sighs taking it from me and holding it like it's pure gold.

I catch a glance of Billy smirking as I get out the car and start walking in the direction of which we were driving.

"Where you going?!" Billy shouts.

"To get help! Stay there!" I call back before jogging ahead, determined not to get stuck with Zak and his moaning.

It takes me almost an hour to get to the garage, I'm almost there when a car travelling towards me stops and takes pity. The good Samaritans take me to the garage and leave me in the capable hands of the owner who owns a pick up truck and a shop full of cooled drinks.

These are the people who enjoy the sun, because the owner instantly agrees to help and soon I'm sat in an air conditioned truck, riding along with a bag of cooled drinks, on the way to help the guys out.

As soon as we arrive, I hear Billy and Aaron who is now awake cheer, hopping out, I pass them water before asking the dead question.

"Where is Zak?"

They both part to reveal him sat in the passenger seat, with his feet on the dash, shirt unbuttoned, the fan in his hands with my cooling gel eye mask on. Looking like a broken batman.

"What the-"

"He found it in your bag. We told him not to go in there, but like a wild bear, he went on the search for food." Aaron answers shaking his head at the sight of him.

"But he has stopped moaning.." Billy adds.

I lift my hands. "That is good enough for me! Now who wants to get out of here?"

They both give me a grin before scarpering over to the nice man who is called Sam and happens to own the cool air tow truck.

Approaching the car, Zak opens his eyes and looks at me as sheepishly as he can with the mask on. "So about all the shit I've been giving you..."

"Let me guess? You are sorry?"

"I am." He replies before adding. "Sorry for going in your bag. But this shit is cool. I take it back about the bag. Continue to carry it and everything bar the kitchen sink.."

"Uh-huh. Well there is water in the truck." I reply.

"Nice. You know what? You ain't that bad after all. Nice work short stuff." He smiles sliding out the car and heading over to the guys, with the mask still on and his shirt now flapping in the breeze like a cape.

DC and Marvel sold me a lie... I didn't get a superhero to save the day. I didn't get a Superman either.

I got a broken Batman in a eye mask.
