Snow Day

I lay in the warmth of the bed, staring silently at the person beside me, admiring every single part of their being, whilst thinking that I am the luckiest person alive to be here right now...

"You're doing it again."

I grin instantly, realising that Zak is awake and not asleep like I had presumed. I watch as his hand reaches out and touches my hip before he rolls across the bed and pushes me onto my back to get a few more minutes of sleep or snuggling in.

I know what you're thinking.. He is a snuggler? Damn straight he is.

I couldn't believe it and it took some getting used to, being a front sleeper, I often tossed and turned throughout the night anyway, but after a few weeks of staying over Zak's, I have now broken my lifetime habit and now sleep on my back, because nine times out of ten, I wake to find a face pushed into my neck and a six foot body cloaking mine.

Now I'm little, a mere five foot four inches.

And Zak is a wall of muscle, so sometimes I have to readjust how he is sleeping on me to get comfy, but other times? Other times we are in the perfect placements and I love nothing more than thriving off his warmth.

I reach around and rub his bare back, eliciting a moan of satisfaction. "I love it when you stay over." He mumbles into my neck making me smile as his stubbled chin tickles my neck.

"I love it too."

I love waking up to his body on mine, him fast asleep and none to wiser that I am absolutely squealing inside because for the first time, and after a shitty ex, I feel adored. His little ways have me all fuzzy inside and to see him wrapped around me, makes me think that I give him as much as he gives me.

He gives me security, warmth, love, attention and time. Things I never really considered I needed, until him.

"Let's stay in bed all day." He says as I run my fingers through his hair.

"No can do.. We gotta walk Gracie."

"Shit.... That dog needs a house key and plausible thumbs."

"Uh-huh." I reply. "And you'll still be the protective dad on the doorstep, waiting for her to come back."

As if sensing that we are talking about her, Gracie jumps onto the bed and comes straight towards Zak. "Oh Gray, it can't be time already."

"Sure is.. Let me up and I'll go let her out for a quick toilet break. Then after breakfast we can head out and take her for a nice walk. Yeah?"

"I'd rather stay in bed.."

"Lazy lump." I reply, pinching his bicep as he rolls off me. I slip out of the bed, letting him fall into my previous position.

"Your pillow smells amazing." He calls as I head across the room to open the doors that lead onto the garden.

"That is because I am amazing." I joke. Whipping back the curtain, my face falters as I stare outside.

What the..

Where?

How?

Why?

"Zak." I speak still looking into the garden, worried that if I look away, this will all be a figment of my imagination.

"What?" He mumbles.

"Umm.. Snow." I point, pressing my fingertip against the glass.

"Urgh.. Really? I'll ring security and have them take it. Don't touch it, incase they have to give it to the police for fingerprints.. Damn drug addicts." He answers.

"No, I mean.. The white stuff." I speak still staring at the outside.

"Snow, coke, Charlie, blow, it's all the same.. Just leave it. Maybe let Gracie out another do-"

I run.

From the doors and straight onto the bed, ripping the pillow from under his head and grabbing his face to turn him to the door. "SNOW!"

At first he blinks.

Then he does what I almost did. He pinches himself and then rubs his eyes before looking confused.

Because a snow filled desert is what happens often...

"There is snow outside." He says looking from the door to me.

"Uh huh. Lots."

"Do you think it is deep?" He asks.

"Don't know, but snow."

He sits up slowly and looks to Gracie who is still staring at us in confusion. Kicking the bedding off his legs, he grabs his jeans and stuffs his feet into his sneakers.

"Where you going?" I ask moving to the end of the bed as he grabs his phone.

"Gracie has never seen snow!" He replies with an excited look on his face.

My heart gives a squeal of its own and I dress quickly and help Zak pull a hooded jumper over his head to hide the bed hair he has, before opening the door and waiting.

"I'm recording.." He speaks as I watch Gracie step outside onto the small section of concrete that didn't get snow.

"What is it Gray?" He asks as she lowers her body and leans forward to sniff at the snow. I almost laugh when she shakes her head and sneezes from the coldness. I'm bursting with love when I hear Zak's laugh and his soft words of encouragement as Gracie heads into the snow, pushing her feet down into the white fluff before moving backwards.

"Is it weird that I always thought Gracie was white but when she is against snow, she isn't completely white?"

"I know, she is more like a grey compared to the snow right?" Zak asks making me nod.

"Get your ball." Zak commands to Gracie as she watches him. Sure enough that makes her forget about the snow as she dashes across the grass to get it. Before coming to a stop and poking the cold ball with her nose.

It rolls to it's side revealing grass.

"Oh she is gonna freak." He says beside me as she looks at the snow and then the grass before looking at Zak for help.

"It's okay. You're okay. Get the ball and we can play in it." He grins like a little boy. He turns off his phone and tosses it onto the side before stepping out into the cold.

Which is how we spend our morning..

Not snuggled in bed, not walking Gracie or even curling up on the couch next to the fire watching reruns of Ghost Adventures.

No, we spend it together, with Gracie, playing in the snow, building a small snowman, throwing snowballs for Gracie to chase and not caring if our noses are pink from the cold. Just simply enjoying time as a little family and watching her fascination with the white stuff.

And I don't mean cocaine!
