Unholy Alliance
The next day Dylan applies for one of Dresden Museum's night shift positions. Luckily, there's a weekend slot open for a part time security position. He smiles mischievously at me after transmitting the application. "Jerry gave me an excellent reference, practically guaranteeing I'll be hired."
Two weeks later he's enthusiastically getting dressed in front of me in his gray, guard outfit. I can't help thinking how proud of him I am. He looks so sexy in his uniform, I want to peel that uniform back off his muscular shoulders. "I'll see what I can find out tonight," he says, unaware of my carnal thoughts. He gives me a quick kiss before heading off to the museum.
Things are finally quiet in the house. Julia's out with Jerry, while Masons's chilling at his favorite pub. I do some homework, then before anyone arrives home, I quietly pull out the Grimore. I'm not as afraid of the book as I was before. I have a hunch some of the book's spells can be used for protection as well as harm. I remember when my mother was young she had tried some healing spells. What happened Mom? How did you get so screwed up and drawn to the dark side of this world?
As I'm reading, I suddenly become sleepy. So tired I can barely keep my eyes open. Somehow, I fall asleep with my head lying on the open book. It's dark when I wake up. My head feels tingly, as if I've brushed a ballon on my head to make static electricity. Yawning, I realize it's early Sunday morning. Shaking the strange energy from my brain, I hear a car pull up outside. Dylan's arrived home. I squeeze fresh oranges into glasses, while he fries up some eggs. While we eat, he shares the results of his night sleuthing at the museum. "I found the catalogue of items Katherine donated to the museum."
"That's great." I'm slathering some I Can't Believe It's Not Butter onto some whole grain toast and waiting for the eggs. "Where do you think the necklace is hidden?"
"We'll find out tonight." Although Jerry's in the loop on what we're doing, I know it's up to Dylan and I to find this Satanic necklace. Jerry doesn't want to know the details of our breaking and entering escapade.
That night, I meet Dylan at the museum around midnight. Cautiously, he lets me in through a back door after the other night guard leaves. Without people in the building, our footsteps echo eerily in the darkened halls of the museum. "Follow me," he says motioning with his flashlight.
Stealthily, we make our way past the various exhibit rooms. After a few moments, we arrive at the Modern Paganism exhibit. "In here," he says. "This is where they keep the statues and the miscellaneous artifacts Katherine donated." The pagan objects are supposed to be expensive art, but in my opinion it's hideous. One artifact in particular draws my attention. It's the statue a man with hairy legs, rolling around on the ground with a goat.
"Jerry told me Katherine met her husband because he wanted to buy her father's art collection." Embarrassed by the statue, I share this detail with Dylan as an icebreaker.
Looking at the goat statue with distaste, my boyfriend frowns." That's just wrong."
Kneeling down by the statue, I get a closer look at the base. "Look, Dylan. The lower stone section of the statue's been mended."
Taking his flashlight, Dylan taps on the patched concrete base. I hold my breath as a crack appears in the mortar, the shape and size of a brick. "The base is probably hollow."
I can barely contain my excitement as I take the flashlight from Dylan and train it on the hole. "Reach inside and see if you find anything."
