Chapter 4
This ice, though it pains Bellona to even silently admit it, wouldn't hold them. The thought stayed as a thought.
"We need to cross now!" Peter rushed out while looking for a way down to the melting river.
"I thought beavers made dams?"
"I'm not that fast dear." Mr. Beaver apologized to Lucy while Peter grabbed a hold of the little girl, pulling her along. Bellona trailed behind them, stopping abruptly at Susan's voice. Something about waiting for a minute.
"We don't have a minute,"
"I'm just trying to be realistic."
"No, you're just trying to be smart. As usual," Bellona kept her mouth shut, choosing to keep herself out of the sibling bickering.
They hurried down a narrow path to the river. Bellona gulped while watching as more ice broke off before being rushed down the river by the current.
"Maybe I should go first," Bellona heard Mr. Beaver say. Peter agreed with the mammal, allowing the beaver to test the ice before them.
Ice crack underneath Mr. Beaver as he tested out the strength of it. "You have been sneaking second helpings, haven't you?" Mrs. Beaver jokingly accused him.
"Well, you never know which meal will be your last, especially with your cooking." Bellona fought back a smile before grabbing hold of Peter's arm. Her legs were frozen to the ground. Suddenly, crossing this weakened path didn't seem like the best idea anymore. She took a couple of steps ahead of Peter before glancing behind her in assurance that at least he was following her. It was a puzzle to try and find the parts that would hold them without breaking off
"Oh no!" Bellona glanced back to Lucy before following her eyes up. Wolves were running across the top of the waterfall.
"Run!"
Bellona took off running behind Mr. Beaver before skidding to a stop. They couldn't have gotten no more than halfway when the wolves got between them and solid land. She pulled her sword out at the same time as Peter, pointing it at the wolf in front of them.
Mr. Beaver called out for Peter to drive the sword through the wolf. Bellona would've done it with ease, but something held her back. A little voice telling her not to. This wasn't her moment to prove something or anything.
"Leave now while you can and maybe your brother leaves with you." The wolf spoke directly to Peter while slowly approaching them.
"Stop, Peter! Maybe we should listen to him!" Susan yelled looking between the wolf and her brother.
"Shut up!" Bellona snapped at Susan before looking at Peter. "Send a message and kill the thing!" She told him. "The White Witch will consider herself lucky if the river brought the body to her." Otherwise, Bellona wouldn't mind personally delivering the body of the wolf to the woman herself.
"Kill him! Kill him now!" Mr. Beaver yelled again to Peter.
"Oh, come on. This isn't your war." Bellona narrowed her eyes at the wolf as he said those words. "All my queen wants is for you to take your family and go."
"Peter, Narnia needs you!" Bellona turned her attention away from the wolf to Peter. "I need you!" This got him to quickly look at her before looking back to the wolf. The canine said something to poke at Peter.
"Peter!" Bellona looked towards the waterfall, watching as the ice slowly cracked away. Water sprayed from the cracks. The waterfall!
"Kirke!" She yelled for her dragon. Claws wrap around her waist before taking to the air. Bellona glanced up at the dragon who soared above the river, following the ice drift holding the Pevensies. Wings were flapped carefully as Bellona placed her feet on the ground. Kirke landed just behind her, nudging her hand for some scratches.
Bellona's eyes widened as Lucy drifted past them in the water. "Lucy!" Kirke immediately dove after the girl, gently grabbing hold of the soaking clothes and bringing her to land.
"C'mon," Bellona muttered while helping Lucy out of the water. Kirke shook the water off of him before following the two females back to Susan and Peter. Bellona guided Lucy closer to Kirke, already feeling the heat coming from his scales. Lucy needed the heat more than Bellona did.
"There they are,"
"Anyone seen my coat?" Lucy asked at the same time Bellona muttered her words. Lucy walked ahead of Bellona and Kirke. Bellona furrowed her brows at the sight of Peter wrapping a soaking jacket around the soaking girl. This made no sense to her.
"I don't think you'll be needing those coats anymore," Mrs. Beaver suggested. Bellona's shoulders relaxed at the sight of pink buds slowly blossoming into flowers. Spring was just around the corner.
Kirke lifted his head, watching as the son and daughters shrugged off the soaking jackets. He slowly approached a blossoming branch, sniffing at the flowers. "Kirke and I will go ahead," Bellona told Mr. Beaver as she climbed onto her dragon. "Hav-"
"I'm sure Aslan is waiting patiently for his child." Bellona smiled before climbing onto Kirke's back. She glanced down at the siblings. "I will see you soon." She promised before Kirke took off, making it to the camp in no time.
Kirke walked them through the camp with his head held high. He eyed those who were preparing for war, the battle that was to come. Bellona smiled at those she trained alongside before climbing off of the beast and walking into the center tent. She pushed through the flaps, smiling at the sight of Aslan turning to face her.
"My child," Aslan smiled at her. Bellona took two big steps before wrapping her arms around him, burying her face in his mane. "While there is much I'd like to hear," Bellona's smile fell at those words before she pulled away. Aslan glanced at a trunk, where a dress was lying out for her. Bellona stared at the dress with displeasure. While she knew she had to look the part, Bellona still preferred her training and combat attire.
"Always hated these," Bell mumbled while dressing herself in the more appropriate dress. Sighing, she pulled her hair out of its braids and shook it out a bit before looking at the flaps of the tent. The Pevensies would be here before she knew it.
