Chapter 6: Leo Gets Hospitalized
Special Dedication to @Read_Write_hope! The correct answer was.....We'll I guess you'll have to keep reading to find out! (Ps, it's not in this chapter)
Leo held his breath as pain shot through his side again. He slowly let it go. His side burned like Hades. He didn't know why, but because nectar and ambrosia weren't working.
"Valdez, are you okay?" Jason asked as he scanned the sign with all the levels. Leo nodded, not that Jason could see, and continued looking for any sign of any monsters. "You know I can't see if you nodded or not."
Leo forced a smile and turned back to Jason. "Yep, of course!"
"Really, because you keep gripping your side."
Leo frowned. "Oh that you can see, but you can't see me nod my head?"
"No it's just-corner of my- Hey! Stop changing the subject!" Jason tugged at Leo's arm. "Forget it, I can't find her room. We better ask for directions."
Jason led the way through the crowd of strangly dressed people, to the elevators and pressed a button. Leo wasn't really paying attention, he was focused on making sure he looked like he was okay. Keeping the sweat of his face, keeping the gasping to a minimum...It was a full time job.
How would Jason think of him if he knew he'd let a stupid empousa poison him? Okay he'd probably force Leo to get it looked at, which is where his problems started. Leo, the hot, sizzling, bad boy and sterile white hospitals filled with sick people who can't move if there's a fire, don't really mix...
Jason stood in a line of people, some of whom were extremely weirdly dressed. A lady with a folded and worn witch hat stood in the from of the line, looking bored. She was dressed like she was in costume for Halloween and forgot to change for like twenty years.
Leo couldn't hear what most of the people were saying but the occasional "NEXT!" could be heard like every five seconds. Finally, just when Leo thought he was going to lose it the couple in front of them walked up.
"My boyfriend thinks he's a frog." The woman said shooting the guy a concerned look.
The guy made a series of croakes and groans that were actually quite impressive. The ladies shared a look.
"Uh...we've never had a case like this..." The lady said yawning. "Try spell Damage, fourth floor."
"But-"
"NEXT!"
Jason and Leo shared a look. The guy made some more reproachful ribbits and the lost couple wandered off. The lady looked them over in disproving.
"We're looking for Hazel Levesque." Jason said.
The lady's eyes trained on Leo. "No, what you should be looking for is medical help."
"What-?"
"I have no idea what you are talking about." Leo lied. "Hazel Levesque, please."
"Empousa poisoning." She said bluntly. "You're a demigod."
"Excuse me?"
"Nurse! We've got a twenty-two-fourteen!" The lady screamed suddenly filled with energy. "Twenty-two-fourteen!"
Before you could say, What the Hades, Leo was being dragged away by four heavily built doctors of sorts. His head slammed against the tile scattering his thoughts like pinballs. Jason had been decked by another guy wearing swabs and a sterile mask. His golden coin sword rolled away like any other cent dropping the floor.
Leo didn't realize he was on fire until the smoke alarms started blaring and the water sprinklers mounted to the ceilings rained down on him like bullets. People were running everywhere. Some were screaming others were crying. Most were running for the doors.
Leo could have sworn he saw two red headed identical twins laughing as they ran towards one the halls.
Then the pain raced up his side. Splitting across his chest. Stars pounded in his eyes. Leo screamed out. Whatever had been blocking the poison had just given up, because sickly green toxin flooded through his veins. The only thing Leo could feel was the agony. It was worse than dying. Like something was slowly ripping him to pieces inch by inch.
He couldn't struggle against the doctors. He couldn't even feel his arms. Black edged his vision like a veil. Jason struggled to lift his head groggily.
The doctor ripped open Leo's shirt, but it was too late. The green waste had clogged his arteries tearing across his chest like a spiderweb until it reached his heart. And his chest pulsed once, Twice...
Jason yelled out, his voice ringing in Leo's ears. Echoing like the last thing he'd ever hear was his own name. Then everything turned black.

Jason wanted to throttled Leo. Then maybe throw his own self off mount Olympus. Then choke Leo again.
Why did that stupid arrogant, son of Hephaestus, not tell him? How did he not notice?
Jason paved around Leo's bed. His elvish features were pale in the dim light. Jason had been pacing for the past two hours, fourteen minutes and ten, eleven, twelve, seconds, praying to all gods. He'd made so many promises, empty bargains with the gods in his head, he wasn't sure what most of them were.
He stopped over the bed, running his hands through his hair.
"Come on." Jason mumbled. "Come on."
The mischievous son of Hephaestus, didn't stir. Only the rhythmic beating of the heart monitor kept Jason from losing all hope. Each second cascaded between beeps, leaving Jason waiting, hoping, praying, it would beep again.
"Jason Grace?"
He turned to look at the lady from earlier, the woman that had called the twenty-two-fourteen on them. Jason still wasn't sure what that had meant.
"Mr. Grace, I'm sorry. " She said genuinely. "But if he doesn't wake up in five minuets he isn't going to...ever."
Hearing those words felt like she was stabbing him repeatedly while apologizing. Apologizing for barring the worst news, Like a broken pencil. Pointless. Jason turned back to Leo's unconscious form
"Come on, Valdez." He muttered.

Leo knew he was dead.Or at least he thought he did. He was misty formed and light headed. He was floating off the ground. And most of all he wasn't feeling anything. It was actually comforting. No pain.
But if he was dead, then why was he on a beach?
Not that he was complaining. He actually was chose to tears. Sunlight, beautiful sunlight. Water brushed against the shore in welcoming tides. Ocean stretched for miles and miles in every direction. This was the type of place you only got if you were in the middle of no where. And by the looks of the sparkling waves changing color as the sun set, this was the place in the middle of no where.
"You are so incredibly stupid."
Leo's heart almost literally leapt into his throat.
There she was. Tall and slim. Beautiful and menacing. No matter what angle she was in, she made it work. Her long, indescribely perfect, carefully braided, carmel hair laid on her shoulder. She wore a white blouse, and jeans, but the knees were covered in dirt and grass stains.
"Seriously? An empousa? Your going to die for that ugly, slutty creature?" Her eyes rolled. "Valdez really?"
"Gah..." Leo choked finally. "Caly..."
"Save it." She crossed her arms leaving a gardening shovel swinging around her wrist. "Look, lover boy, I don't intend to let the stupidest of the guys who made it here, die because he got a scratch, okay?"
"I wasn't intending to die." Leo said.
She glared. "Good."
"Good?"
"Good." Calypso's mouth wavered. Like she was fighting from grinning. "Gods, Valdez. You swore on the River Styx. For me? You do realize if you die before you find me you might actually go to Tartatrus."
Leo swallowed hard. Percy and Annabeth had almost gone insane there. But that didn't matter. That didn't even bother him. It hurt Leo just to think about dying before getting back there. Before getting a chance to see her again. Before telling her the millions of thoughts running through his head high speeds.
If only he could find the words to say them.
Calypso knelt and picked a small rock of the ground. It was a caramel color, matching her hair almost perfectly. It was in the shape of a heart.
She smiled for first time and stepped closer to him. He could just barely smell her juniper fragrance. She placed the stone in a pocket in his toolbelt. He totally thought it would fall through but, the rock disappeared. Then she looked at him. Since he was floating all ghost like and stuff, they were the same height. He watched a tear fall down her cheek.
"Come back to me, Leo." She throw herself around him, hugging him. He wrapped his arms around her, but even as he did he felt his body dissolving.
"I will Calypso." Leo said smiling faintly. "I'm a professional remember?"
She sniffled a laugh and he faded entirely.

Jason was sweating. His hands were clammy. His mouth was dry. Even his feet ached from pacing. The monitor was still beeping. But Leo wasn't waking.
"Come On!" Jason yelled. "What are you waiting for?"
No response.
"You ate up most of your time Valdez!" Jason said. "You've only got thirty seconds. What could be so amazing that you'd give up living, that you'd give up finding finding Ogygia again?"
The nurse lady stood next to him biting her lip. She looked like she was going to tell him. Like she was going to say to his face, his friend wasn't waking up.
Obviously she didn't know demigods.
She held a stop watch in her hand, it counted down the seconds. The mini hand ticked past the the fifteen second mark. It shakily bounced past the ten seconds dash.
It was counting down, like the millions of people in New York square on New Year's ever shouting out the numbers until the new year had begun.
"Five seconds. " The lady said. "Jason honey, I'm sorry-"
She didn't get very far.
Leo Valdez coughed himself back to life. Flames sprouted in his hair but he sat up. Jason sighed with so much relief he forgot how mad was with Leo.
Jason bro hugged him. And Leo looked utterly amazed.
But the one who was the most effected was the nurse lady. She stood there shocked. Her mouth opened, her hat tilted, the watch stopped on one second left. She looked pale and gulped for air. Then she collapsed on the ground.
"She might need a doctor." Leo commented.
"Yeah."
But even as Jason walked over to alert a doctor or nurse, whatever, Leo's hand slipped into his pocket. His fingers rolled over the smooth surface cutting the shape of the heart. For the first time ever since Jason had accidentally disappeared, Leo felt something.
Hope.
Because he figured a rock from her sandy shores would work just as well as a crystal from her cave.
