7. race wars
Race Wars was finally here, and the crew had gotten there a couple hours ago. Each member so far had a race. Letty was up for her second race as Sophia cheered her on. She tried to make it seem okay, but she was anxious. The last time she felt like this was her dad's race; he died that day.
If anything, today confirmed the one thing she been feeling, Dom was doing something he shouldn't be doing. He and the crew were part of the cargo steels that were happening around Los Angles. Sophia hated it when her intuition was right.
Now he was more adamant on this cargo steel, Jesse was nervous, Leon, Vince and Letty tried to hide their nerves, but Sophia could easily see how nervous they were. Brian was acting more fidgety and protective over her.
Despite her older sister protesting Sophia not to go, Mia allowed it if she stays out of trouble, especially what the crew planned that no one had gotten into detail with her. Mia stayed home to study more for her exam but asked for updates from Sophia.
To ease her nerves, Sophia did the one thing that helped her refocus. Drive. She pulled her car up to the starting line, pushing her sunglasses down over her eyes, rolling her window down.
"Hey sweet checks." Sophia rose an eyebrow and turned her head to the car beside her and her eyes landed on the male driver.
"You should be watching from the side. I wouldn't want to get any exhaust on that pretty face."
"Why don't you put your money where your mouth is." Sophia said.
"Well, how 'bout I race you for that sweet little ass?"
"How about you stop socializing?" Sophia asked him as she already felt irritated. "You want an adrenaline rush; it would be too much for you to handle. Why don't we let our driving do the talking."
The man held up his own wad of cash. "You got it."
Sophia smirked as she put her wad of cash down, rolling her eyes when the racer blew kisses to her. The brunette glanced out into the crowd, a smile growing on her face when she spotted Brian standing beside Letty. He locked eyes with her and winked, causing a small laugh to leave her lips.
Once given the go, Sophia immediately took off. She shifted between gears, coming neck and neck with the man. She rolled her dark brown eyes as he hit his NOS way too early.
"Too early, pendejo." She muttered to herself.
She waited until the right moment before she hovered her finger over the red button on her steering wheel, before pressing it.
A gleeful laugh left her lips as her car launched forward, flying past the driver. She stuck her hand out the window and flipped the driver off before her car crossed over the finish line.
Sophia turned her car around and drove back to the starting line where a crowd surrounded her car. She was met with applause as she stepped out of her car, Letty walking up to her with a grin as they hugged.
The other car pulled up beside them and he dejectedly got out of his car and made his way over to them, handing the money over. Sophia grabbed it with a smile before she shoved it into her wallet with the rest of her money.
The brunette looked around the crowd, frowning in disappointment when she couldn't see Brian anywhere. Letty noticed it and rubbed her arm.
"Come on, let's go." The Latina said with a gentle smile. Sophia nodded her head and forced a smile as the pair made their way towards where the crew all sat.
The calm only lasted a few minutes before Leon ran up to them, with panic written all over his face. "Yo! Heads up, bro. We got problems."
"What?" Dom asked and Leon pointed towards the tracks.
Sophia widened her eyes as she saw Jesse's Jetta driving away. "Jesse."
She got up from the seat her and Letty had both been sitting on and made her way toward Leon, hands on her hips. "Where's Jesse going?"
"He just raced Tran." Leon explained, looking towards her. "For slips."
Dom ran a hand over his face. "Oh, shit."
Johnny Tran pulled up in front of them, angrily getting out of his Honda. "Where's he going?"
"He went to the car wash." Dom lied, Sophia tensing up.
"Whatever." Johnny discarded it and stepped closer to her older brother. "Go fetch my car."
Letty looked at Sophia, the pair sharing a look. Sophia didn't like this at all expecially the danger Jessie was potentially in.
"Go fetch your car?" Dom repeated. "We ain't on your block anymore, you better watch who you talk to like that."
Dom turned his back to Johnny and started to walk away, grabbing Sophia's arm and leading her in front of him. Sophia held onto his hand as she grew more tense.
"Toretto!" Johnny suddenly exclaimed, both Toretto's turning back around to face him.
"SWAT came into my house, disrespected my whole family because somebody narc me out. And you know what? It was you!"
Within a second later, Dominic left his sister's side as he advanced toward Johnny. Sophia jumped back as she watched them exchange words before her brother punched him in the face.
A few security guards ran over to them, shoving Sophia out of the way. Leon grabbed her and moved her to the side as he went to help Vince pull the security guards off her brother who continued to bash Johnny.
"Dom!" Sophia yelled for him. "Dom, stop!"
Lance ran over to them, to stop Dom, only to have Letty punch him in the face. A gasp left Sophia's lips as she felt someone grab her arm. She clenched her fist and turned sharply but relaxed when she saw it was only Brian.
He pressed his lips to her forehead and held her to his chest as they finally managed to pull Dom off Tran. She immediately held onto him as she felt her stomach drop. Last time she seen Dom this anger was the days after their dad died.
"I never narc on nobody!" Dom screamed. "I never narc on nobody!"
"Come on!' Vince hissed as he grabbed Dom, pushing him away from the crowd.
Dom stormed past Sophia, heading towards the RV. Letty quickly followed him, squeezing Sophia's shoulder as she went past. Brian grabbed her hand and gently led her away from the crowd, the brunette interlacing their fingers.
"You, okay?" Brian asked her softly.
Sophia nodded her head as her voice was soft, "For now."
Brian wrapped his arms around her waist as she gave him a tight-lipped smile. Brian leaned forward as he pressed his lips to her forehead. The sound of her ringing phone made them pull apart, Sophia sending him an apologetic look as she took the incoming call from her sister.
Brian watched her walk away, phone pressed to her ear as a peaceful smile stretched across her face just by hearing her older sister's voice. He couldn't help but regret what he was about to do.
He was running out of time to find the perpetrators, which left him with no choice about her finding out. He didn't want to lose Sophia, he couldn't. He never wanted to lose her.
Brian sighed to himself, rubbing his forehead. What the hell was he going to do?
Race Wars; Midnight
Everything calmed down for a couple of hours. The crew advised a game plan on what to do with Jessie when they got back. Sophia still felt uneasy but kept herself busy with the schoolwork she brought with her. But she couldn't help but notice Dom and the crew acting jitter.
She knew they were still going to go through with the heist. Watching her brother leave their area, Sophia chased after her older brother as midnight rolled around. The brunette latched onto Dom's wrist and pulled him around to face her.
"Dom, don't do this." She pleaded, not letting her brother's glare intimidate her. "You're only gonna make this worse."
"Soph, I'm doing this for both of us and Mia." Dom finally spoke.
Sophia scoffed loudly at his words, looking at him in disbelief. When Dom tried to place his hand on her cheek, she stepped away from him and shook her head.
"Don't give me that crap. You're doing this for you." Sophia blinked away the tears as she gave a frustrated huff. "I have respected you and I haven't said shit. Now I'm asking you not to go."
"Sophia -"
"Why are you insisting on doing this?" Sophia exclaimed, cutting her brother off. "Dominic, please, just don't. Don't go. Please."
Dom sighed heavily before stepping closer to his sister and grabbing the back of her head as he kissed her forehead softly. Sophia closed her eyes tightly, letting a tear roll down her cheek.
"I love you." Dom said quietly before turning his back to her, walking to his car. Letty, Leon and Vince also got into their cars before they drove off, leaving the youngest Toretto by herself.
Sophia 's chest heaved erratically as she stormed off, wiping her cheeks angrily as she made her way away from the crowd of dancing people.
"Sophia." The brunette didn't turn her head as she heard
Brian's footsteps near her. "Sophie, what's going on?"
"What do you mean? Everything is fine." She asked as he walked beside her.
Sophia sniffled as he followed her. "You know what I'm talking about."
"No, I don't." Sophia scoffed as they continued to walk.
Brian shook his head. "What, you always have tears in your eyes when Dom drives away?"
"What is the matter with you?" Sophia snapped as she turned her head to glare at him.
"Come on, what's your brother racing off in the middle of the night for?" Brian interrogated her, causing the brunette to shake her head softly. "You know about the trucks?"
The youngest Toretto came to a quick stop, turning around to face her boyfriend. The past few weeks had been draining for Sophia, especially today. Knowing the gut feeling she had of her brother being right made everything feel too real.
"No, Brian! What trucks?" She lied as she gave a frustrated sigh and turned around to walk away only to have Brian grab her arm and pull her back to him. "Jesus Christ, what?"
"Listen to me!" Brian snapped. "Sophia, I'm a cop."
Sophia's body tensed as she turned back around to face him, crossing them over her chest as she glared at the man in front of her.
"What are you talking about Brian? What is this?"
Brian's eyes softened as they darted between hers. "Ever since the first time I met you, I've been undercover. I'm a cop."
At that moment, her heart shattered into a million little pieces. He had lied to her, to everyone and they had all fallen for it. She had fallen for it.
"Oh, you bastard. You bastard." Sophia let out as she felt her heart break.
She ripped herself away from the man she thought she knew as she stormed away, trying to keep the tears at bay. Sophia had trusted him, they all welcomed him to the family.
Brian ran after her and grabbed her wrist again. "Sophie-"
"Don't call me Sophie! You know I trusted you" Sophia snapped as she whipped around, slapping his hand away from her.
"Sophia!" Brian called out to her as she hastily walked away from him, the blonde chasing after her once again, ignoring the pain in his heart.
He stopped in front of her and grabbed her shoulders tightly. "Sophia, listen to me! Everything I ever said I felt about you was real. I swear to God. You must believe me, Sophia. But this isn't about you and me. Your brother's out there about to pull a job and we're running out of time."
Sophia hesitantly met his gaze, holding it as Brian continued.
"Those truckers aren't lying down anymore. Maybe they'll make it through the night. But every law enforcement agency is coming down on them. If you don't want anything to happen to your brother, to Letty, to Leon, to Vince, just get in that car with me right now and help me. Sophia, you are the only person that can help me right now. Please, Sophia. Please help me."
Brian looked at her pleadingly, her conflicted gaze staring back at him. He had broken her and her family. She couldn't trust him. But if it meant saving her family? Sophia bit her lip and finally nodded her head. She would do this for her brother, for family.
