3. business deal went sour
Dominic stopped in his tracks and looked inside the car as Sophia leaned her head in between the seats, letting him see her. Relief washed over his face when he caught sight of his younger sister in the car.
He quickly opened the car door and jumped inside, Brian not wasting another second as he swerved around the corner, narrowly missing an approaching car.
"What are you doing here?" Dom questioned as his eyes narrows at his younger sister.
Sophia looked towards her brother as he grabbed hold of her hand. "I was too busy making sure Mia got out of there okay to find a ride of my own. Brian got me out."
"That true?" Dom looked back to Brian.
Brian nodded, keeping his eyes on the road. "She needed help."
The brunette looked out the windscreen, only to see two incoming cop cars heading straight for them. Brian smoothly slid between the two cars with ease, barely even touching them.
Sophia furrowed her eyebrows at this, Brian speeding over a hill, the Mitsubishi Eclipse becoming airborne for a short second before it hit the ground roughly.
"You're the last person I expected to show up." Dom admitted, breaking the silence.
Her brother was right, Brian had no reason to help them. Dom had almost gotten him fired from his job, beat him in a race where he took his car and then basically humiliated him.
Brian looked at the oldest Toretto. "Yeah, well, I thought if I got in your good graces, you might let me keep my car."
"You're already in my good graces, but you ain't keeping your car." Dom smile grew a bit.
Sophia bit back her smile at her brother's response. The car was silent for a while before he continued.
"You drive like you've done this before. What are you? A wheelman?" Dom accused as he grew wary of Brian.
"Dom." She warned, knowing full well where this was going.
Brian looked at her through the rear-view mirror, catching the look of discomfort and disapproval on her face.
"Naw." He answered truthfully, looking back at the road.
Sophia raised her eyebrows at this even though she was mad at her brother for judging but there was no way in hell he could have gotten into racing without some kind of connection.
"You ever boost cars?" Dom pushed even more.
The once look of disapproval and discomfort on Sophia's face morphed into anger. She sometimes forgot how ballsey her brother could be.
"Dominic!" she warned, reaching forward and slapping him on his bicep. He turned and glared at her, only to find she was already glaring at him.
Brian sat in silence, debating his answer. "Naw, never." He lied.
Dom turned his attention from his sister to the blonde next to him. "Ever done time?"
"A couple of overnighters, no big deal." Brian responded to her, his eyes shifting to hers momentarily.
"What about the two years in juvie for boosting cars?" Dom questioned, Brian looking over at him with a surprised look. "Yeah, I had Jesse run a profile for Brian Earl Spilner. You'll find anything on the web, anything about anyone. So, why the bullshit?"
Brian cleared his throat. "So, what about you?"
The car went silent as Sophia grabbed her brother's large hand in her small one, feeling him squeeze it gently. "Two years in Lompoc. I'll die before I go back."
Sophia squeezed his hand back, her brother looking back at her. He couldn't go back. If he went back to jail, it would tear their family apart once again. The two years Dom was in jail was hell.
Sophia let go of his hand as she looked back out the back window noticing how familiar the streets seemed, her eyes widening as it finally clicked on her.
"We have a problem." Before they could question her on what she meant, the sound of engines came from behind them.
"Ah, great." Dom groaned, cursing himself for not recognizing the streets earlier.
Brian looked towards him with furrowed eyebrows. "What?"
Sophia puffed out her cheeks and gave a long sigh as her brother replied to him. "It's gonna be a long ass night, that's what."
Sophia shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her hand grabbing onto Dom's arm as her eyes locked on Johnny Tran. Dom glanced at her in concern, knowing the history she had with Tran.
Johnny had hit on her multiple times. It got to the point where he started to make unnecessary comments about her.
Johnny tapped his gun against Brian's window, Sophia jumping slightly.
"Follow us!" Tran shouted before he and his crew took off down the road, Brian following behind, no questions asked.
They came to a stop in a place called T & K Food Market, written in both Chinese and English. Brian and Dom got out of the car, Dom turning around and pulling the passenger seat forward, letting his sister out.
He pulled her beside him as the Asian men and women in front of them pulled their helmets off. Sophia tensed up as Johnny caught sight of her, sending her a smirk as he trailed his eyes up and down her figure, his eyes lingering in places they shouldn't.
Dom stiffened and glared at Johnny as Sophia clutched Dom's leather jacket in the palm of her hands, moving herself closer to him. She glanced around them, seeing Johnny's cousin, Lance, standing behind Johnny, holding a gun to his chest.
"I thought we had an agreement." Johnny directed his words to Dom, "You stay away, I stay away. Everybody stays happy."
"We got lost." Dom deadpanned, moving over to hide Sophia behind him. "What do you want me to tell you?"
Johnny raised an eyebrow, eyes glancing between the three of them. He stayed on Sophia for a second too long, Dom's glare on him intensifying.
Johnny snapped out of his trance, glancing Sophia up and down before not so subtly licking his lips.
Sophia shifted on her feet uncomfortably, leaning onto her brother's back. "Who's we?"
Sophia's eyes found Brian's who was standing on the other side of his car. She grew worried not only for her brother but for Brian as well.
"Uh - my new mechanic. Brian, meet Johnny Tran." Dom introduced, nodding towards Johnny who had a menacing smirk plastered on his face.
"The guy in the snakeskin pants is his cousin Lance. So, when are you going to give me a shot at that Honda two thousand of yours?"
Johnny stepped towards Brian's car, eyeing the Mitsubishi Eclipse. "This your ride?"
"It was." Brian nodded towards Dom. "It's his now."
Dom quickly shook his head, faking confusion. "No, it's not. I haven't taken the delivery yet."
"Then it's nobody's car." Johnny said as he ran his hand over the hood. His eyes met Sophia's, the brunette glaring at him.
"What's with the look, sweet cheeks?" Sophia clenched her jaw in anger but ignored him.
Johnny then turned his attention towards his cousin. "Somebody put in the wrench time. What do you think, Lance?"
Lance stepped closer to them; his gun raised. He looked towards Sophia and sneered at her. "It's an amazing machine."
"Yes, it is." Johnny laughed as he patted Dom's arm roughly. "Let's go. I'll see you in the desert next month. Be ready to have your ass handed to you."
Sophia held in her scoff. Dom had never seen a set of taillights in his life. All they wanted was to rile one of them up to be an excuse to start something.
"You're going to need more than that crotch rocket to beat me." Dom remarked.
Johnny climbed onto his motorbike, followed by his crew. "I got something for you."
Tran revved his engine, the girl on the back of his bike giggling. Johnny winked at Sophia before they all took off.
They stood in silence for a minute before Brian spoke up. "What the hell was that?"
"It's a long story." Dom sighed. "I'll tell you later. Let's get out of here."
Just as they were about to get back into the car, Johnny and Lance reappeared and began to shoot at the car. Dom grabbed hold of his sister's arm and pulled her away from the car, Brian doing the same on the other side.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse caught fire and the cousin's left. Sophia looked towards the car as she stayed by her brother, hit by a familiar smell.
Dom noticed it too and the siblings shared a wide-eyed look, before yelling out at the same time. "NOS!"
Dom dragged Sophia further away from the car, shielding her body with his as the car blew up in flames. The flames began to sting the brunette's eyes, so she placed her head on Dom's shoulder, his arm going around her.
Dom pulled away slightly and looked over his younger sister, his eyes searching for an injury. "Are you okay, Soph?"
"I'm fine." Sophia nodded, assuring her brother. "I just want to get out of here."
Dom gave her a short nod before they both looked over to Brian. "Now, what the hell was that all about?"
The siblings didn't reply at first as they started to walk out of the parking lot, Brian following as He stood beside Sophia. "It's a long story. Dom sighed.
"Well, we've got a twenty-mile hike. Humor me."
Sophia smiled at the blue eyed blonde as her brother spoke. "Business deal went sour."
"It also doesn't help that this idiot slept with his sister" She jerked her head in Dom's, "Not to mention the fact that Letty chased her outta the house not even twenty minutes after." Sophia added with a chuckle, earning a glare from her brother.
