2. racing for respect
As the crew pulled up into the alleyway for race night, Sophia stepped out of Letty's car, men automatically whistling and catcalling at the sight of the pair, the brunette rolled her eyes. Sophia turned to see her older sister offering her hand, Sophia grasping it in hers as Mia also got out of Letty's car.
Letty and Sophia were extremely close, Letty was always protective of her and Mia. Sophia had met Letty when she was around ten and Letty was fourteen. Letty soon became a big sister to the two Toretto's before she started dating Dom. She taught Sophia a lot about cars and how to fix them up.
Sophia and Mia were finding their way towards Dom, who was wrapped up between two girls. Sophia couldn't help but send a disapproving glare her brother's way, knowing Letty wouldn't find anything amusing about the situation.
"What?" he asked tiresomely.
She narrowed her eyes, shaking her head. "You know what." She retorted, averting her eyes to the many people around her.
Letty made a cat sound as she approached them, Sophia and Mia knowing what was about to happen.
"I smell," She paused as she sniffed the air. "Skanks. Why don't you girls just pack it up, before I leave tread marks on your face?"
The two girls that were beside Dom quickly nodded their heads, muttering quick replies before scurrying off.
"Letty, I was just talking-"
"Yeah, whatever." Letty interrupted Dom with a scowled as she walked away from their brother.
Before Mia went with her she grabbed Sophia's wrist to grab her attention. "I'm check in on Letty. Please, be careful."
"I will." Sophia gave her a reassuring nod as Mia followed where Letty went.
Dom sighed, watching them walk off before turning back to the crowd of people. "Okay, Hector.
"Yeah, what's up man?" Hector walked over to him, shaking his hand.
Another racing friend of theirs followed behind Hector. "Yo. What's up?"
"Edwin." Dom greeted as Sophia stepped closer to him.
"How we doing this tonight?" Edwin questioned as Sophia crossed her arms over her chest.
"One race. 2g buy in. Winner takes all." Dom stated. "Hector, you're going to hold the cash."
Another racer that was participating in the race, handed his money over to Hector.
"Why Hector?"
Sophia smirked as she stepped next to her brother, leaning in with raised eyebrows. "He's too slow to make away with the money."
The group surrounding them all laughed at her comment, Mia nudging her sister in the back while sporting a massive grin, Dom giving Sophia a smirk. Hector simply rolled his eyes at the girl.
Dom clapped each of them on the shoulder. "Good luck, guys."
"Hey, wait, " Someone yelled out as the group began to disperse, "Hold up."
The youngest Toretto's heart skipped a beat as she looked over and saw Brian pushing his way through.
"I don't have any cash. But I do have the pink slip to my car." He stated, showing everyone the slip in his hand.
Sophia's eyes widened in surprise. It was obvious Brian had never seen her brother's race before.
"You can't just climb in the ring with 'Ali just because you think you can box." Jesse cut in, Sophia was hoping Brian would take the reference and back out, unfortunately, that wasn't the case.
Brian pointed at Vince "He knows I can box."
Sophia glanced down to Vince, only to see him with an angry expression on his face.
"So, check it out, it's like this. I lose, winner takes my car, clean and clear. But, if I win, I take the cash and I take your respect."
And while Sophia was still worried Brian didn't completely know what he was getting himself into, she was also extremely impressed with how confident he was being.
"Respect?" Dom laughed, the crowd along with him.
Except for his youngest sister who was looking at the boy in admiration, smiling from ear to ear, Mia chuckled from her spot beside her younger sister.
"To some people that's more important." Brian said looking over at Sophia, their eyes meeting briefly.
Sophia's smile grew, glancing at Mia only to see her wiggling her eyebrows suggestively at the younger girl. Sophia rolled her eyes and slapped her arm lightly.
Dom-though he looked calm and composed on the outside-was ballistic at the blonde for engaging with his youngest sister right in front of him.
"That your car?" He asked pointing to the neon green eclipse sitting off to the side.
Brian averted his eyes to his car, nodding his head. He, along with everyone else, made their way over to the green beauty.
Without asking, Jesse leaned his head over as he inspected the car. "I see a cool air intake. It's got a NOS fogger system and a T4 turbo, Dominic. I see an AIC controller. It has direct port nitrous injection."
"Yeah. And a standalone fuel management system." Dom added while eyeing Brian, his facial expression unreadable. "Not a bad way to spend ten thousand dollars."
Edwin stepped forward, taking a closer look at the car. "You see that that shit? He's got enough NOS in there to blow himself up. Period."
Brian shrugged, a large grin on his face. "So, what do you say?" He questioned, his hands in his pockets. "Am I worthy?"
Dom chuckled. "We don't know yet. But you're in. Let's go."
As the crowd hustled to get to their cars and out onto the streets, Sophia made her way towards Brian.
A smile on her face as she approached him. "Your either crazy or stupid."
Brian furrowed his brows amusingly. "Maybe a little bit of both." he teased, opening his car door.
"As much as I'd like you too, you won't win. No one ever beats a Toretto, especially Dom." She warned him.
"So, I'll be the first? " He questioned nonchalantly, a confident smile on his lips. The Toretto opened her mouth to speak but found herself closing it.
She wasn't sure why, but she felt Brian might beat her brother. Even though Dom was the best, she wanted to believe that Brian was better. So, she decided at that moment to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"Yo! Sophia! Let's go, we ain't got all night!" Leon yelled over the dozens of car engines, cutting their talk short.
Brian looked over her shoulder and then back down at her, she smiled at him.
"Good luck out there, Brian." She said and with that she spun on her feet and ran over to Leon's car.
Before she had the chance to shut the door completely, he hit the gas and sped off.
Beginning of the Race
Sophia stood impatiently next to her older sister and Letty as they waited for Leon to give Hector all clear. Excitement erupted within the crowd when Hector stepped forward, thrusting his arms in the air.
"Go!" He yelled, dropping his arms
Sophia stood on her toes as she watched the four cars speed off. Brian's swerving left and right before he regained control. She watched anxiously, as Brian tried desperately to bump himself to the front.
Though his car was fast, it wasn't fast enough, and he fell behind. The tiny sliver of hope she'd had earlier disappeared when they began to approach the finish line and Brian hit his NOS too early.
Despite being upset she cheered with everyone else as her brother hit his NOS, zooming past the finish line and winning the race. A crowd began to form around Dom's car as he climbed out, the other racers going seemingly unnoticed by everyone.
Sophia was the first to hug her brother, him returning the gesture. Though she'd wanted desperately for Brian to win she was still proud of her brother.
"My sister holds the money." Dom said as he released her. As Hector handed her wads of cash Dom pointed at her, "Count it."
He picked Letty up by her waist. "And you're my trophy."
Sophia made a throwing up motion to her older sister, who giggled and rolled her eyes. She counted the money three times before handing it off to Mia, knowing that her sister would have a better place for it than out in the open for someone to take.
As she turned around, she spotted Brian pulling up in his car, smoke pouring out from under the hood. He climbed out with a large grin on his face. Jesse ran over to the car, looking up at the grinning man.
"Was that fun?" he asked in disbelief.
Dom followed closely behind him, watching as Jesse popped the hood open. Smoke flew into the air, people erupting into shouting. But Brian stared down at the inside of his car, his grin turning into a full-blown smile.
"What are you smiling about?" Dom asked looking at the blonde in confusion.
Brian pointed at Dom. "Dude, I almost had you." He laughed, causing the crowd to cheer.
Dom looked around, before pointing to the man. "You almost had me?"
He questioned; Brian nodded. "You never had me. You never had your car. Granny shifting, not double clutching like you should. You're lucky that hundred-shot of NOS didn't blow the welds on the intake."
The crowd let out 'Oh's', Brian's grin completely disappearing. "Almost had me?"
Dom was circling the car now, joking around with a couple of racers. Sophia bit down on her finger to keep herself from smiling.
Though she liked Brian, she had to admit he was a pretty reckless racer and could probably learn a thing or two from her brother if Dom was willing to teach him.
As he circled back around to the front of the car he pointed over at Jesse. "Now me and the mad scientist have to rip apart the block and replace the piston rings you fried."
Dom looked over at Brian who stood still in his spot. "Ask any racer. Any real racer. It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winnings winning."
The crowd cheered in agreement, but panic broke out as Leon yelled out over the radio. "Oh, shit! We got cops. Cops! Go!"
Everyone scattered back to their cars, Sophia looked at her older sister with panic filled eyes. Sophia was worried not just for her brother but for Mia, if she got caught it would ruin her chances of graduating college. She looked around before spotting Vince.
"Go with Vince!" She said as she pointed towards him. Mia gave her sister a pointed look as she got ready to protest. "Go! I'll be fine!"
Mia nodded her head, running off towards Vince. Sophia turned her head, hoping to find someone she knew. Everyone she knew had already left causing the brunette to sigh in frustration. She was so screwed.
A hand suddenly grabbed onto her wrist, Sophia's head quickly turning only to find it was Brian. He pulled her behind him, towards his car as the red and blue lights got closer to where they were.
"Come on, we have to get out of here!"
Sophia didn't hesitate as she opened the passenger door and slid into the car just as he took off driving. The brunette looked through the back windscreen as Brian drove them away from the race scene quickly.
Her dark eyes scanned the area, confirming that all her crew's cars were all gone. A sigh left her lips as she slumped back in her seat and ran a hand through her hair.
Brian cleared his throat and glanced over to her. "You, okay?"
She nodded her head at him, her eyes meeting his. "Yeah, just making sure my sister got out of there alright."
The car fell into silence before she broke it. "Thank you. I don't know what would have happened if you weren't there."
Brian smiled charmingly at her and went to respond only to catch the sight of her brother running down an alley. "Is that your brother?"
Sophia turned her gaze to the front, seeing her older brother running down the alleyway, followed by a cop car. "Yeah, it is."
Brian took a sharp right turn, motioning with his head to the back of the car. "Get in the back so he can jump in."
The brunette nodded her head and climbed over the console. At the feeling of eyes on her, she rolled her eyes. "Stop looking at my ass and focus on the road."
Brian laughed as she sat back down in the seat, just as he cut off Dom's path. "Get in!"
