15. a ten second car

Sophia lost track of how long they drove around for. When the vehicle came to a halt, Sophia quickly sat up in her seat. Brian parked the Hummer underneath an overpass bridge, giving them some cover and time to figure things out.

The trio exited the car. Dom walked over to the trunk while Brian walked away from the car. He pulled his phone out and dialed his boss's number. He took a deep breath before pressing the call button. Sophia leaned against the side of the car; her arms folded over her chest.

She could hear Brian quietly talking to someone on the phone. She tried to listen in on what they were saying but she couldn't hear much. Sophia looked down at her feet out of boredom. She was getting tired of standing around waiting while they tried to come up with something.

She froze when she spotted a small trail of blood leading to the back of the Hummer. Her eyes widened and she quickly looked over at Brian, wanting to see if he was the one bleeding. Her eyes wandered over his body. It wasn't him.

At first, Brian was confused, but when he saw Sophia practically run to Dom, he knew something was wrong. He spotted the blood trail and immediately hung up the phone, not caring that he was going to be in so much trouble for that.

He was already in trouble, a little bit more wasn't going to do anything. Dom was simply standing there, staring at the contents of the Hummer. It was a shit ton of drugs.

"So, this is what sixty million dollars looks like," Dom said nonchalantly, glancing over at the two.

Sophia got close to Dom and started inspecting him for wounds. Sophia walked around him as she looked at his back since his front side was clean.

She gasped when she saw a bullet hole in his jacket. Blood was slowly dripping down from it and onto the concrete beneath him.

"Dom! You got shot! Why didn't you tell me about this sooner, you idiot?" Sophia demanded, turning him to face her. She smacked his arm and frowned at him as Dom just shrugged.

"We gotta get you to a doctor, man," Brian told him, taking a small step forward. Sophia glanced back at him, shaking her head.

"No, no doctors. That's too dangerous, he could get caught. Maybe I can fix you up, but Mia may be the best option even though we shouldn't get her involve," Sophia explained as Dom nodded.

"We gotta find somewhere to hide this first," Dom said, nodding towards the Hummer. Sophia huffed in annoyance. They needed to look at that wound as soon as possible.

"I got a spot."

The three of them got back into the Hummer. Brian drove them to a police impound lot. Sophia raised an eyebrow as they pulled up. Dom glanced back at his sister, who shared the same concerned look he did.

The car stopped at the entrance and a police officer walked up to the car. Brian flashed his badge at the man.

"Five-oh-two wet reckless, I need a twenty-four-hour hold," Brian said.

Sophia and Dom laid low, playing it casual. Dom avoided eye contact with the officer in case he recognized him.

"Out back. Any spot you can find," The officer spoke.

Brian nodded and pulled forward. It took him a few minutes to find an empty spot. Once he did, he parked it and the three of them got out.

"Are you sure about this?" Dom asked. He still wasn't too comfortable with this idea.

"Yeah. The last place they'll check? Their own impound yard. Trust me,"

Brian reassured them with a small smirk. Sophia shot him a look. She found herself thinking about what happened last time they trusted him. She started to get annoyed with herself.

He had practically saved her life back there and she was being bitter about the past. She started walking away as the two boys followed. They all walked at the same pace. Sophia shoved her hands in the pockets of her jacket.

"You know, I've been thinking. When you blew up your car back there, you blew up mine too," Brian said, breaking the awkward silence.

Sophia's car had gotten blown up too, but it felt like the least of her worries right now.

"Yeah?" Dom asked, glancing over at Brian.

Sophia looked at Brian too, her gaze lasting a little longer. They made eye contact. Part of him was saying just stay away from her so he can't hurt her anymore and the other part of him told him wrap her up in your arms and never let her go.

"Yeah," Brian repeated, breaking his train of thought. "Now you owe me a ten second car," He added with a smirk.

Sophia chuckled. It reminded her of the good old' days as they continued walking together.

"Is that right?" Dom asked, shooting a sideways glance at him. Brian nodded.

"Yeah," Brian said again, his smirk widening

"Since you blew up mine, does that mean you owe me one now too?" Sophia asked her brother, smirking.

Dom smiled and shook his head at the girl. She was just messing around with him; she wasn't that concerned with her car.

"I owe everybody ten second cars now?" Dom asked jokingly.

A few moments later, Dom led the two over to a 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX. Dom used his non-injured arm and broke the driver's side window with his elbow. The glass fell to the floor.

Dom opened the door for Brian, then looked at him with a smug smile. "Now we're even."

Safe House

Brian took them to a safe house that he used sometimes and was currently staying at. Sophia immediately called Mia knowing it was the best next thing to a doctor for Dom. Sophia kept Mia up to date with finding Letty's killer, but she knew to keep certain things out knowing Mia would worry.

A knock sounded on the door of the safe house they were in, Brian leaving to get it. Sophia lingered in the doorway and saw it was Mia and surpassingly history man.

"Is this your way of keeping me away from him?" she asked Brian sassily.

"You're the only one we could call." Brian shrugged but becoming curious on who the man was.

Mia looked at him as if he had two heads. "He's my brother, of course."

Sophia grinned and walked forward, Mia rushing towards her. A soft chuckle left her lips as Mia wrapped her in a hug.

"You brought Logan?" Sophia whispered to her sister, "That means you do like him."

Mia just looked at her younger sister sheepishly and just nodded her head yes. Both girls just smiled at each other noticing Logan introduce himself to Dom and Brian but felt a sense of worry that Dom may scare him off.

Mia walked to where Dom was, Mia going over to check his wound. "The bullet's not in there. I'm gonna clean it and stitch it up. It's going to hurt."

"I bet you're going to enjoy this." Dom replied, Sophia looking at her siblings with a fond look.

Mia grinned. "A little."

Mia worked on Dom as the rest of them chatted for a bit. Logan kept both Sophia and Brian entertained with his stories of his students. Knowing everyone would be hungry Brian brought out old take-out menus. All of them agreeing on Chinese

Once the food arrived, Sophia set the plates down in front of the boys as Mia placed the bags of Chinese takeout she had bought with her onto the table. Brian smiled at the brunette as she sat down beside him, saying a small thanks. Sophia returned the smile as Dom immediately started to eat his food.

"Dom, what do you think you're doing?" Sophia questioned.

Dom turned to her confused, Mia scoffing. "You reached first, you have to say grace."

Logan looked a little confused but caught on once Mia explained as Sophia backed her sister up. Dom, Logan and Brian looked to each other before both sisters reached out and grabbed their hands in their own.

"Thank you, Lord, for blessing this table."

"With food, family and friendship." Mia added as Sophia smiled softly at her.

"Amen." she said quietly.

"So, Logan what are your attentions with my older sister?" Sophia asked bluntly, causing him to become a deer in headlights.

"SOPHIA!" Mia yelled at her younger sister giving her a stern look.

"What was just a question. Dom would've or properly did ask that question." Dom and Brian both starred at each other in amusement.

"Mia, it's okay," Logan told Mia grabbing her hand in comfort, "I like your sister a lot, she is always making me smile. I don't think I can imagine life without her." Logan finished staring at Mia with a soft gaze.

"Dom, sorry to say but I think we're stuck with him know." Sophia was trying to joke to cover up the fact that it warmed her heart.

"I guess he is." Dom smiled knowing his sister is happy with someone who cares for her.

After they had eaten and exchange of stories, Dom left to go look through some boxes of Letty's old things as this was her safe house. Sophia stood up and grabbed the dishes, carrying them to the kitchen. Mia sent Brian a look of encouragement.

"I remember that I told you that the chef never cleans." Brian told her as he got up and followed her.

Sophia turned her head to the side and smiled at him, rolling her eyes, "Okay, how 'bout I wash, you dry?"

"Sounds good." Brian smiled charmingly at her, taking the clean plate from her hands.

Sophia smiled to herself, keeping her eyes on him for a minute as he focused on drying the plate in his hand. Mia and Logan watched them, Mia having a knowing smirk on her lips. Sophia quickly returned to the sink.

A couple of minutes passed before Brian spoke up. "You asked me why I let Dom go."

That caught Sophia's attention as she turned her head to him. "I think it's because in that moment, I respected him more than I did myself." She remained silent as he continued. "One thing I learned from Dom is that nothing really matters unless you have a code."

"And what's your code, Brian?" Sophia asked, smiling softly at him.

"I'm working on it."

Sophia nodded her head at his words just as Brian's phone started to ring. He set the plate down before walking over to the table where Mia sat with Logan in mist of conversation, picking it up.

"Shit." Brian let out as Sophia turned around and gave him a confused look, "Hey, Dom."

Dom came charging into the room, nothing by pure rage on his face, "When were you going to tell me?"

"Dom, what's going on?" Sophia asked as Brian walked towards him.

"When were you gonna tell me you were running Letty?" Dom demanded as Sophia walked to Mia's side while Logan had a protective arm in front of Mia. Sophia furrowed her eyebrows confused.

"Let me explain -" Dom cut Brian off by grabbing the front of his shirt and throwing him into a shelf.

Logan moving Mia away from the scene causing Mia to grab Sophia's arm as the shelf broke, glass raining down. Dom picked Brian up and pushed him into the wall behind them.

"Dom, stop!" Sophia yelled.

"You don't understand -"

"I don't understand?" Dom cut him off as he threw Brian over the table and into the other part of the room.

"Stop!" Mia shouted behind Logan's protective arm. Logan not knowing what to do but knowing to make sure Mia is okay.

Dom started to throw punches at Brian. "She did it for -"

"Dominic!" Sophia screamed. "Stop it! Please stop!"

"Dom, stop!" Mia echoed her younger sister's yells causing Logan to grab her hand and rub small circles to comfort her.

Brian reflected one of Dom's punches, long enough to wrap his legs around Dom's neck. Dom picked Brian up, slamming him back on the ground. Sophia held onto Mia's other hand, the younger girl panicking, not knowing what to do.

"She did it for you, Dom!" Brian screamed, Dom's fist freezing in midair. "She did it for you! Letty came to me to clear your name in exchange for bringing down Braga."

Mia gasped softly, Sophia covering her mouth with her hand. Letty died protecting Dom like she had all these years.

"She just wanted you to come home! I'm sorry, Dom! I'm sorry!" He yelled as Dom walked away.

Brian kicking a box. Sophia left Mia's side as she made her way to Brian's side.

As Sophia left, Logan looked at Mia with concerned, "Logan I'm so sorry that happen-"

"No need to be sorry," Logan's gaze softened when looking at Mia, "Mia are you okay?"

"Honestly, no but I am glad you are here and not running for the hills." Mia let out a sniffled laugh

"I thought about it for a quick second," Logan tried joking but only caused Mia to worry, " I'm kidding, I work with middle schoolers trust me this is nothing new."

Mia smiled at his response and the thought that someone that's not related to her cared for her this much gave Mia the confidence to hug him.

Sophia, making it to Brian's side, looked at him with worry, not knowing how serious his injuries were.

"Are you okay? Is anything broken?" Sophia questioned him softly, placing her hand on his back.

"I'm okay. Just a few scratches" Brian nodded, grabbing her hand.
