13. still breathing

Sophia adjusted her top as she followed Dom through the crowded club. The atmosphere made her uncomfortable. When she was younger, she used to love places like this, but now not so much.

There are too many sweaty people with no sense of personal space. As well as everything that had happened, all her focus was mending her family. Dom nudged Sophia when he spotted a familiar face over at one of the pool tables, Brian.

"Great," Sophia mumbled, feeling her breath catch in her throat when she followed her brother's gaze.

She didn't understand how seeing Brian could literally take her breath away yet make her want to cry at the same time. She kept telling herself that she hated Brian, but deep down, she knew it wasn't true.

Even after everything he had done to her and her family, Sophia couldn't bring herself to hate him. Brian felt a pair of eyes on him. He looked up, instantly making eye contact with Sophia.

He wasn't expecting to see her here, but he was glad to see her. It just gave him an excuse to spend more time with her. Sophia quickly looked away, breaking eye contact, she walked to the bar.

"Two Coronas please," Sophia said to the bartender, sitting down on one of the bar stools.

Having Brian here was just going to make everything so much more difficult. This was already hard enough as it is going undercover with Braga. Sophia felt someone brush against her shoulder. Based on the feeling she got when their skin contacted, she knew it was Brian.

"Sorry to hear about Dwight," Brian said.

Dwight, one of the other drivers, had gotten arrested thanks to Brian, and could no longer work for Braga. So, Brian filled his place conveniently.

"The night you get your house raided by the feds, you make the team. So unfortunate," Brian added with a mischievous smirk on his face. He sat himself in between the two Toretto siblings.

"I wonder who's to blame for that," Sophia said, smiling a sarcastic smile as she turned to face the two men beside her. Dom chuckled at her words.

It was difficult for him to be around Brian so Dom could only imagine what Sophia was feeling right now. He was aware of how she felt about him, even if she didn't want to admit it. He could tell by the way she looked at him. That's the way that Letty used to look at him.

Brian looked at Sophia for a moment. He wondered how he had managed to go so long without seeing her smile. He had missed her so much.

"I couldn't say I'm surprised to see you here," Dom told Brian.

The bartender handed the two siblings their beers. Sophia smiled as a way of saying thank you. She picked it up and took a swig.

"There's only one thing keeping me from telling Campos you're a cop." Brian turned his attention towards Dom.

"It's probably the same thing that's keeping me from telling him why you're really here," Brian countered, shooting Dom a look.

Sophia shook her head. Dom picked his Corona up and took a drink. Across the room, Campos spotted his three drivers and practically ran to them, he was happy to see them.

"Aye, what up fellas?" Campos said, slapping the two males on the back in a friendly manner. He then looked down at Sophia.

"You got some balls Chica! I'm glad we were able to fit you in. I like having you around," he said to Sophia, a smirk playing at his lips. His eyes wandered up and down her body.

Sophia grew uncomfortable. She didn't appreciate him practically undressing her with his eyes. Brian, who noticed this discomfort, stood up partially covering her from Campos' eyes.

"Hey man, how you doing?" Brian said, taking the attention away from Sophia.

Sophia silently thanked Brian. Campos looked at the blonde and smile. They gave each other a 'bro' hug.

"I'm doin' great! You having fun?" Campos asked, looking at the three people that stood there with him. Brian nodded. Sophia wouldn't think the situation at hand would be considered fun.

"Yeah. We're havin' a great time," Brian replied, resting his arm on top of Sophia's shoulder.

She quickly grabbed her beer and took another swig to hide any emotion she felt from the skin-to-skin contact she and Brian were making. She knew he was doing it to help convince Campos he was being truthful but part of her felt comforted by the gesture.

"Come on, let's have an even better time," Campos said, slowly backing away with a grin plastered across his face.

The two siblings grabbed their beers and followed Campos, Brian trailing behind them. They all sat down in a slightly more private area. It was much easier to hear now.

Sophia took a seat next to Dom. Brian sat across from her, giving the two a perfect view of each other, which is something Sophia wanted to avoid. It was getting harder and harder to deny her feelings.

"How's your car? It took a nasty bump."

"It'll be ready." Brian took a swig of his corona.

"I also heard you just got out of County." Dom smirked while Sophia cocked an eyebrow.

"Yeah? You know a guy named Jim Garcia?" Dom asked.

"Nah." Brian shook his head. "Big place. Lots of names, lots of faces."

Campos turned to Dom. "And you, you're wanted by a lot of people, homes."

"Yeah, that kind of heat can't be good for business." Brian retaliated.

Sophia rose her eyebrows at the two, knowing that they were both trying to get the other one into trouble. Sophia took a sip of her beer as her brother replied.

"Yeah, well, that depends on how you look at things. I go down, I do time. I do real time. I don't know about your other drivers, but when I see flashing lights in my mirror, I don't stop."

They sat there silently. Campos noticed this tension between his guests.

"Do you three know each other?" Campos asked, almost smiling.

Sophia was curious as to what the two would say in response to him. She grabbed her Corona and took a sip.

"He used to date my sister," Dom answered, glancing at Sophia.

Sophia awkwardly cleared her throat. She looked away from the small group of people, beginning to feel embarrassed. Brian kept his eyes on Sophia.

"I see," Campos said, an amused look on his face. He looked over at Brian. "You're a lucky man."

Campos opened the bottle of vodka he held in his hands. There were four shot glasses on the table in front of him. He poured the alcohol into each of the shot glasses.

"How's that?" Brian asked, turning his head to face Campos.

Campos simply chuckled and handed his guests a shot glass. Sophia downed the shot quickly, squinting her eyes at the feeling of the alcohol burning its way down her throat. She set the glass back on the table.

Sophia was going to need to focus, and drinking was not gonna help her get through the night. That shot was the last thing she was drinking.

"You're still breathing," Campos replied in a joking tone.

It was clear that Dom cared a lot about his sister. Dom laughed while Brian took the shot. The two ex-lovers stayed silent. Sophia did her best to avoid eye contact with Brian. She really didn't want to talk about their past relationship right now. She could feel Brian's eyes on her. He couldn't help it.

Brian began to feel angry. Why did he have to ruin so many peoples lives? Brian knew he couldn't change the past, but if he was given the chance, he would do so many things differently.

Sophia hates him and he's just going to have to learn to live with it, but he doesn't want to. There's not a day that goes by that Sophia doesn't occupy his mind. It kills him to see the sad expression on her face whenever he's nearby. He didn't know what he could do to make her forgive him.

He wasn't sure if it was even possible knowing it's a long shot. Brian knows he wants to try to fix things but if it is putting her through more pain. He knew deep down he had to stay away to stop her from getting hurt.

"To the ladies we've loved and the ladies we've lost." Campos toasted, snapping Brian back to reality.

He almost forgot that he was surrounded by other people. He needed to set his feelings aside for the moment and focus on taking down Braga.

The boys toasted as Sophia drank her beer rolling her eyes at the three men. She couldn't deal with any of this, and she knew focusing on the wrong things could get her and Dom caught.

"So," She spoke. "What's Braga about?"

"You know, he's just one of us." Campos explained. "Came up from the streets. Down for El barrio. Now he's a shot caller. The boss of bosses. See all these cats in here? Any one of them would die for Braga."

Brian leaned forward. "Including you?"

"Especially me." Sophia looked up as a man walked up behind him and whispered in Campos' ear. "Enjoy the party, fellows, Chica. Clubs yours. Whatever you want, booze, broads, it's all good."

Once Campos had left, Brian turned to Sophia and Dom. "Braga's mine. I'm taking the whole house down."

"Good luck." Dom spoke as two girls sat down beside him.

"Well, I need some water, does anyone want anything while I'm up there?" Sophia asked as an excuse to follow Campos.

"I'll take another beer," Dom told his younger sister.

Sophia nodded at him and stood up. She looked at Brain to see if they wanted anything, but he shook his head. Sophia walked off to the bar, Brian watching her leave.

Sophia quickly trailed far behind him, wanting to see where he was going and if she could find any information about Braga. She didn't want to send Dom because he could be easily spotted and in general a bad idea.

She was easier to blend in with the crowd due to her height. Plus, Dom was practically famous around here for being wanted by the police. Sophia also knew Dom wouldn't send her either if he was part of the plan, he rather gets caught then put her in trouble.

Sophia followed Campos into a long, dark and crowded hallway. There were several people making out. Sophia scrunched her nose up in disgust. Sophia made sure to keep some distance between her and Campos. She didn't want to get caught. She didn't know it yet, but Brian wasn't far behind her.

He was following Campos too, trying to do his job. He spotted a familiar dark-haired girl just a few feet in front of him. He knitted his eyebrows together in confusion. Brian took a few steps forward and caught up with the girl.

"What are you doing?" Brian asked her quietly.

Sophia wasn't expecting him to be there either. She looked at him surprised. She then looked away from him and kept her eyes on Campos. Campos was talking to a man at the end of the hallway.

"Investigating. What are you doing?" Sophia asked. They tried their best to look discreet.

"My job," Brian replied.

"Right. Forgot about that." Sophia admitted as she kept scanning their surroundings.

He stopped walking and gently put a hand on her shoulder so she would face him. She came to a halt and looked at the man in front of her.

"You should go. It's not safe for you. I can handle this." Sophia gave him a look.

She shook her head, refraining from making a snarky remark. Sophia knew this was something she had never done before but she would do anything for her family. She glanced over Brian's shoulder at Campos.

Her eyes widened when he started to turn around. She and Brian couldn't be seen, he would know they were following him. Sophia needed to think of something to do and do it fast. Her eves flickered over to a couple who were making out. An idea popped into her head.

Quickly, Sophia backed up to the wall and grabbed Brian's shirt, pulling him close to her. She wrapped her arms around his neck to try and hide herself from Campos's view. Brian raised an eyebrow at the girl.

He didn't mind being inches away from her, but he was confused. He wrapped his arms around her waist, playing along with whatever she was doing. Sophia looked up at Brian. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest. They hadn't been this close to each other in a long time. She hated herself for how much she wanted to kiss him right now.

Brian's eyes searched for her face. Sophia swallowed hard. She looked over and Campos was gone. She detached her arms from Brian. He did the same.

"S-Sorry. Campos was looking over here and I thought we were gonna get caught." Sophia trailed off awkwardly. Brian nodded.

"No, it's okay. Good call," Brian told her.

He was glad she did something to stop them from being caught because he wasn't paying attention then. Sophia was thankful that the hallway was dimly lit; her cheeks were stained with a rosy, red tint.

"I think he went into that room," Sophia said, nodding towards a door at the end of the hallway that Campos had previously been standing near.

She looked down at her feet then began to walk away. She felt embarrassed for doing that. She felt like she should've done something else, but she panicked. Sophia isn't used to being in situations like that.

Not only was she embarrassed but being that close to Brian brought back memories. Memories that she didn't want to think about. It made her sad. Campos went into a room, and she knew it was the end of the road for her investigation.

Brian is part of the police and even if she it hurt, she knew he had to take over if they truly want justice for Letty and do bring Dom home. Sophia began to walk away to let Brian do his job.

Brian grabbed her arm, stopping her from walking away. "You leaving?"

Sophia nodded her head as she folded her arms across her chest. "Please be safe."

"You too," Brian replied as Sophia was walking away.
