12. racing for a spot

Dom made sure to keep Sophia updated on everything he did when it came to his investigation for finding Letty's killer. Turns out there was going to be a race held where the man who sells nitrometh will be there. And the race was to recruit his new drivers.

However, Dom didn't arrive at this race alone. Sophia refused to let him go unless she went too. If she was there, she could prevent him from doing something stupid or getting himself killed. The two siblings had spent a good thirty minutes arguing about it but eventually Dom gave in.

Little did the Toretto siblings know, thanks to the interrogation that he had done with David Park, Brian had a spot in the race too. He was going undercover again. The last time he went undercover around the Torettos, it didn't work out so well.

Sophia and Dom parked their cars right next to each other. As they got out, they spotted a group of people walking past them. One of the people in that group was Brian. Sophia watched as he walked by.

They made eye contact causing her stomach to be tied itself in knots. A tall, dark-haired girl was leading the group, Gisele Yashar. She spotted Dom, she had heard a lot about him.

"You one of Park's guys?" The woman, Gisele, asked. Dom nodded.

"Follow me." The Toretto siblings tagged along.

They were led inside of the building next to the parking garage where most of the people were gathered. As they were on the top floor were a man standing near the edge of the room, playing golf. There was a net spread out over the parking garage below so the balls wouldn't injure anyone once they went flying.

The man, Ramon Campos, turned around to face the group of potential drivers. He noticed Sophia standing there and raised an eyebrow. He had heard anything about a female driver.

"Who's this?" Campos asked Gisele, nodding over to Sophia.

"I'm here to race," Sophia said, answering for Gisele. Sophia folded her arms across her chest. All eyes were on the youngest Toretto sibling now.

"I know the slots are filled, but I want this just as bad, if not more than they do. If you give me a chance, I can assure you that you won't be disappointed." Campos smirked at the girl. She had some balls showing up knowing there wasn't a place for her. He liked her already.

"You know, with a face like that, I think we can make an exception," Campos said.

This earned a few laughs from the other men in the room. Brian clenched his jaw. He felt protective over Sophia, even though they were not together, and she basically hated him.

He glanced at her as she moved her gaze to him. Sophia appreciated him, wanting to ensure she was okay even though she still felt hurt by him.

"You all know why you're here? Good drivers are a dime a dozen, man," Campos spoke, concentrating on hitting the golf ball in front of him. He swung, sending the small white ball flying.

He continued, "Every corner has a tuner racing for pinks. That's not what Braga's got me looking for. Braga wants someone who would sell their Abuelita to be behind the wheel. Someone who's not only going to race their cars in a straight line, but to push it and take it to all the places that no one else would take it. Real drivers."

"So, what are we hauling'?" Dom asked, a slight smirk spread across his face.

"For the money Braga's paying, you don't need to know," Campos replied in an amused tone.

"You just said you wanted real drivers. A real driver knows exactly what's in his car," Dom dead panned. A dark-skinned man sitting on a chair in the corner stood up, staring at Dom.

"Aye, 'real driver, nobody is forcing you to race," Fenix spoke, a hint of a Hispanic accent in his voice.

"I'm sorry, are you the boss? Or am I talking to the boss?" Dom asked sassily.

Sophia refrained from shaking her head. Well at least she knows where she got her attitude from. Fenix took a step closer, getting in Dom's face.

"Do I look like the boss?" Fenix asked.

Sophia studied Dom's expression. He wasn't even phased by this guy's attempt to be threatening. Campos looked over at the two men.

"My job is to find the best drivers, period. Whoever wins the race gets the info. We cool?" Campos asked. He didn't have time for drama. When the two men just continued to have a stare down, Campos spoke again.

"Are we cool?" He repeated. Gisele handed each racer a small gadget. It looked like a GPS.

"Yeah, we're cool," Dom replied, taking the GPS that Gisele had handed him.

"Uh, no. We ain't cool man. Who's closing those streets?" A short, dark-skinned man in a beanie asked. Campos smirked again.

"No one. That's the point."

Start of the Race

"Proceed to the highlighted route," A female voice from the GPS spoke.

Sophia looked at the small screen she mounted on her dashboard, watching as a yellow arrow began making its way through the city map, showing her where she would be going. It began to count down.

"You sure you wanna do this?" Dom asked Brian.

Sophia turned her attention towards them. It was weird to see them interact with each other after everything that had happened.

"A lot has changed," Brian replied. The other racers began to rev their engines.

Brian looked at Sophia, his expression changing from serious to sad. He missed her so much. Sophia felt her gaze soften on him before she refocused.

"You're right," Dom said.

The GPS continued to count down. He turned his head and looked straight forward. As soon as the GPS said 'go', every racer slammed on their gas peddles and took off flying. Sophia gripped the steering wheel tightly. This had only just started, and it felt intense.

Sophia slammed her foot down on the gas. Dom's silver Charger did a wheelie before he was ahead of everyone by a few feet. Sophia rolled her eyes at his antics before she caught up to him.

"Right turn ahead." The voice from the GPS repeated.

Sophia quickly shifted gears and turned right. Silvia took too wide of a turn and got nailed by an oncoming car. Sophia's eyes widened as she watched a white pick-up truck slam into the back of the car that had hit Silvia.

The white truck going flying into the air. Sophia gasped. She quickly whipped the wheel to the left to dodge the wreck, maneuvering her way through a few oncoming cars.

Sophia shifted and turned right, cutting off Brian and another racer as she did so. The brunette glanced into the back windshield to see the racer yelling and Brian shaking his head with a grin on his face. Sophia laughed to herself as she sped up.

"You are now five miles from your destination."

They continued to race through the streets of LA, swerving in and out of traffic. They drifted around another corner, Brian drifting way too far which caused a minor accident.

Sophia's eyes widened as she saw a car pull to a sudden stop in front of her, the brunette swerving towards Brian's car before she could hit it head on.

"Right turn ahead." Sophia drifted around the corner harshly, avoiding oncoming traffic.

"Oh, shit." She whispered as she saw one of the racers get T-boned, Brian's car speeding ahead.

"You are two point six miles from your destination."

Sophia shifted gears and sped up as she saw Dom up ahead, easily passing him just as Brian's car came flying down onto the highway beside Dom. Sophia rolled her eyes as Dom hit the back of Brian's car. She couldn't believe the two of them.

"You are now one quarter mile from your destination."

Sophia hovered her finger over her NOS button after flicking the top of her stick shift up. Dom's car came flying up behind her and she smirked.

As soon as he got level with her, the brunette pressed the button and her car lurched forward, zooming down the street.

The brunette looked over her shoulder, only to see Dom swerve to hit Brian. Sophia turned back around as she passed the finish line, drifting in front of the crowd before coming to a stop.

"You have reached your destination. Goodbye."

Sophia stepped out of her car and smirked at the cheering crowd that surrounded her. She maneuvered through the crowd as Dom and Brian pulled up beside her. Brian slammed his car door and charged towards Dom.

"At least we know you can't beat me straight up."

"I didn't know there were any rules." Dom replied as Sophia walked over to them, getting in between them.

She crossed her arms over her chest and narrowed her eyes to the two of them. "Stop it. Both of you."

Their attention turned towards the man with the mohawk as he approached them. "Now that's what I call real driving." He spoke, mainly looking at Dom which caused Sophia to scoff under her breath.

"No, that's bullshit, man!" Brian snapped.

Without thinking Sophia quickly reached her arm behind her back, reaching for Brian's hand. Her heart thudded in her chest as she grabbed onto it, squeezing it gently. His thumb rubbed against her knuckles as she kept her eyes forward.

"Go cry to your mama, eh?" The guy with the mohawk said.

Brian shook his head and as the man turned back to Dom, Sophia turned her head. "Brian, go home. Get some rest, they'll probably call you back in because they need a racer like you."

Blue eyes met brown as they stared at each other. Sophia gave him a pleading look and after a minute of staring at each other, Brian nodded.

"Be careful." Brian squeezed her hand as she nodded before dropping it and walking off back to his car.

The man in charge walked towards her and shook her hand. "You work for Braga now."

Sophia softly smiled at him. "To be honest with you, my brother is the better driver. He only lost to me because he wasn't thinking for some reason. However, he drives better than anyone I've ever met and knows cars like the back of his hand," Sophia explained, "Between the two of us, I have the brains, I know the system and technology better. Trust me, you need both of us."

The man stood there, taking in her words before nodding his head. "All right, Ms. Toretto. I'm taking the both of you. When the GPS calls, you follow."

Sophia nodded her head, and he walked off. The brunette smiled as she walked over to her brother, holding up two hands.

"Boom." Dom shook his head with a smile. "I beat you."

"I let you win."

Sophia scoffed. "No, you didn't."
