10. five years later

It had been five years since Sophia's life went haywire. Five years after the events that occurred, the day the Toretto family was torn apart. Five years since Jesse died and not being able to see Vince, Leon, Letty and their brother. And five years since Sophia had last seen Brian, someone who must not be named.

Mia was able to finish college and start working at the local children's hospital. While Sophia finished her courses online, she was working many jobs to help provide for them as she waited to hear back on a Liaison position she applied for. She kept her promise to stay strong for Mia so she wouldn't put her life on pause.

Letty had returned after a year of being away. Sophia felt a fresh breath air when Letty showed up to their door. Letty made sure to keep a low profile, usually she stayed in their garage working on Dom's old car or helped around the house. The last couple of weeks they hadn't seen her, and it caused Sophia to worry.

Sophia tried to keep busy as she did mundane tasks, especially around the house. She even worked on her cooking skills and with her new love for cooking had her go to farmers markets and grocery stores when she was in the mood to cook.

Coming back from one of her trips she came home to Mia getting dropped off by a friendly face she hadn't seen in a minute.

"So, was that history man who dropped you off?" Sophia questioned her older sister as she walked into the kitchen with groceries.

"His name is Logan and yes he did," Mia was going on as she helped her younger sister put groceries away, "We just went to dinner to catch up."

"Is this the part you try to explain you both are just friends and nothing more." Sophia explained finishing putting the food away.

"Exactly, just friends from college." Mia smiled as she grabbed her things.

"Do you like this said friend from college?" Sophia asked, curious, to see her sister's reaction as she started to do the dishes.

"Night S!" Mia ran out the kitchen avoiding her younger sister's question

"Night sis!" Sophia hollered back shaking her head at her sisters reaction.

The phone suddenly started to ring and Sophia furrowed her eyebrows. Who calls someone at twelve in the morning? A sigh left her lips as she set the glass down and made her way towards the ringing phone.

"Hello?"

"May I speak with Ms. Toretto?"

"This is she." Sophia replied, leaning her back against the counter.

A short sigh came from the other end before the woman spoke once more. "Ms Toretto, I'm afraid I have some bad news. It's about Leticia Ortiz."

"Excuse me? What do you mean bad news?" Sophia asked worriedly, her heart starting to beat faster, "Is Letty okay?"

"I'm so sorry to say this but unfortunately Ms. Ortiz has passed." The woman replied and Sophia felt the air leave her lungs. "I'm very sorry for your loss."

Sophia froze in her spot, her breathing hitching in her throat. This wasn't happening. It had to be joke, Letty had to be okay.

"Um," She cleared her throat as tears welled in her eyes, "Thank you." She stammered out before hanging up.

The phone slipping through her fingers and clattering onto the ground, the brunette gasping out. Tears poured out of her eyes as Sophia shakily slid to the floor, her throat closing up. How could Letty be dead?

Sophia stayed there for a few minutes, silently crying into her arms before she got to her feet, leaving the kitchen as it was as she headed up the stairs and towards her sister's room. The brunette sighed as she stood in front of the closed door, wiping at her cheeks before slowly opening the door.

Mia turned around in her bed and blinked up at her younger sister in confusion as Sophia walked over and switched on the lamp beside Mia's bed.

"Soph? What's wrong?" Sophia cleared her throat and sat down on the bed.

Mia pushed herself up, crossing her legs as she sat beside her sister. Mia felt herself grow more panicked as she noticed Sophia's red eyes and tear streaks.

"What happened?" Sophia sighed shakily as a fresh batch of tears rolled down her cheeks. "Soph?"

"It's Letty." Sophia finally said, pausing to sniffle. "She's dead." Her voice broke as she said it.

Mia automatically felt tears well up in her eyes as she began to cry, covering her mouth with her hands. Sophia quickly wrapped her arms around her older sister like she did for her, letting Mia cry into her shoulder. Sophia herself started to cry again and the brunette rocked the two of them back and forth.

After a while, Mia had cried herself to sleep. Sophia set her back down on her bed and shut the light off, heading downstairs. There was one more thing she had to do. She walked over towards the cabinet in the living room and started rummaging through the drawers.

She found the piece of paper and pulled it out, rereading it to make sure it was the right one. God, she hoped it was the right one. She nodded to herself before walking over to the phone that was still lying on the floor and picked it up, dialing the number on the paper. The phone rang a couple of times before it was picked up.

"¿Quien es este?" A young boy's voice sounded.

"Necesito hablar con Toretto." Sophia replied without missing a beat.

"Si."

The line was silent for a minute before she heard a familiar voice speak. "Quien es este?"

"Dom, it's me." Sophia simply stated.

"Sophia." Dom sighed. "I told you not to call me here."

Sophia cut him off. "Dom, it's Letty. She's been murdered."

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she heard her brother take a sharp intake of breath, the phone silent for a minute. "I'll be there."

"Dom, no you can't come back." Sophia warned. "They'll start scouring the streets."

"Don't worry I'll be safe." Dom replied. "I love you, Soph."

"Please be careful, I love you too." Sophia told him as tears fell down her cheeks

At the Funeral

Letty's Funeral was something Sophia never thought she would experience so soon. She's been to funerals before, but she never thought she would be at one so soon. Jesse didn't have one but Mia and Her had a nice dinner in remembrance of him.

Having to get ready for it felt like mere seconds and being there now felt like years waiting for it to start. Sophia clutched onto Mia's hand as she followed behind her older sister as she led them towards their seats. Sophia played with her necklace to calm her beating heart.

Mia looked around the area as her gaze caught onto someone in the distance. The oldest Toretto nudged her sister nodding her head in the direction of where the FBI agents stood surveying the area. Sophia turned her head, her eyes landing on the person she least expected to see.

Her heart thudded erratically as she remembered the joy and the pain, he caused her. No matter how much she denied it, he was her first love and her only. She still loved him no matter how much pain he caused her and her family. She would always love him. His face was void of emotion until he locked his striking blue eyes with her dark brown ones.

Both seemed to freeze as their eyes met. Flashes of their relationship rushed through their heads, both remembering the best parts. Brian's face softened, unintentionally giving her the same longing look he gave her back in the desert.

Sophia's eyes filled with tears as she gave him a sad look, breathing out after she realized she had been holding her breath. She gave him one last look before turning back around, placing her hand in Mia's before they took their seats in the front row.

"We have gathered here to pay our final respects to Leticia Ortiz." The priest spoke as Sophia clutched onto Mia's hand tightly. "Let us reflect on her journey. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me like down..."

Sophia started to sob, Mia wrapping her arm around her, leaning her head on Her's. Letty was their older sister that did everything to protect them. They have known her ever since they were little, she was someone who helped with boys, school, and anything girly that Dom couldn't help with.

Both Mia and Sophia remembered the first time meeting her. Every dinner she helped cook with them, dinners as a whole family, the late-night girl talks. The sisters clutched each other tightly as they cried, as they mourned.

Toretto's home

It was dark by the time they returned home, Mia going straight to bed. Sophia had a quick shower before changing into jeans and a cardigan.

She grunted as she carried a box of Dom's old things into the garage, placing it down on the table near her. A noise sounded behind her, and she spun around on her heel. Her teary eyes met the deep brown ones belonging to her older brother.

"Dom." She whispered as she ran towards him, wrapping her arms around his neck. Dom was quick to catch her and hold her against his chest. "You shouldn't be here, they're staking the place out. If they find you..."

"They won't." Dom cut her off, pressing his hands to her cheeks. "Trust me. Come on, look at you, beautiful as ever."

Sophia smiled at him, his eyes scanning the garage until he spotted their dad's old charger, that was still mostly destroyed from when he'd crashed it while racing Brian. Sophia's smile turned sad as her brother walked towards it, looking back at her.

"Letty wouldn't let them junk it. Even though it is a goddamn curse." Dom turned back to the charger, spotting his silver cross necklace hanging from the rear-view mirror.

"When she came back, she was always in here, working on it, day and night. It was weird. It was like she knew you were coming back."

"I want to see the crash site." Dom told her, turning back to her.

Sophia shook her head. "Dom, I don't think that's a good idea."

"I need to see it."

She knew Dom wouldn't let it go and rather he be by-himself she agreed to take him. Sophia could feel her heart beating increase as they got closer to the place. It wasn't too long of a drive before arriving at the crash site.

Sophia got out of her brother's red Chevelle and motioned her head down the road towards the crime scene. "It's straight ahead."

Dom moved away from the car and walked towards where there were skid marks on the ground, Sophia leaning against the hood of the car, letting out a sigh as she watched her brother.

Dom looked around the scene, no doubt in Sophia's mind that he was imagining what had happened that night. He crouched down to the ground, touching the road.

Sophia furrowed her eyebrows before her brother stood up and walked back to the car. He got in, Sophia following shortly after. Dom didn't waste any time before he took off, back towards the Toretto house.

Dom pulled the car to a stop at the curb about three blocks from the house so he wouldn't be caught.

They sat there in silence for a bit before Sophia cleared her throat lightly as she turned her head to face him. "You found something back there."

"There were burn marks on the ground." Dom told her, gripping the steering wheel tightly. "The kind that could only be caused by nitrometh. There's only one guy in all of LA that sells that."

"Dom, nothing that you do will bring her back. You must know that doing what I think you're going to do will solve nothing. It will only cause more trouble for you. If I were Letty, I would ask you - Hell, I would beg you to please let this go Dom. Let it go before it's too late," Sophia said to her brother.

She knew that he would try to do something to avenge Letty. Sophia couldn't lose her brother, not after everything that happened. Dom turned towards Sophia. His expression was unreadable, as usual.

"It's already too late," Dom said quietly.

Sophia sighed, knowing who he was talking about. "I'm helping you then"

"No, you're not, it's too dangerous."

"I'm helping you whether you like it or not." Sophia argued. "You know damn well that I am just as capable of doing this as you are." She reached over and placed her hand over his. "Dom, trust me, I can do this."

Dom sighed. "I know you can. That's what makes me worried. I don't want you to get hurt like last time."

"I know."

Dom shook his head. "Alright, get outta here. I don't want you to walk home any later than this."

Sophia laughed slightly before kissing his cheek. "I love you."

"Love you too, Soph."

She gave him one last look before opening the car door and climbing out. She closed the door behind her, then began to walk home as Dom sped off. Though it was a short walk, Sophia was thankful for it. The silence of the night helped clear her head.

As Sophia approached her house, she noticed a short man in a suit exit the car that was parked outside of her house. He reached into his jacket and pulled out his badge, showing it to her. Sophia sighed and stopped walking.

"Can I help you?" Sophia asked, putting her hands in the pockets of her jacket.

She had an annoyed expression plastered on her face. Ever since Dom had been on the run, cops were constantly bugging Sophia and Mia to find out if they had heard anything from Dom. She never told them anything. You would think by now they'd get the hint.

"Miss Toretto, I'm Michael Stasiak, FBI. Let's you and I have a little talk."
