•you drove the Getaway Car•
I've spent the 15 minutes I walked here with overthinking about how I could get into there without getting caught.
But for the first time in forever the luck seemed to be on my side.
This clearly wasn't the main police station in this city. I'm sure not even of this quarter. In front of me was a small nondescript house. The only thing that really convinced me that this is a real police station was the fact that "Police station" was written in brighten letters above the door.
A few police cars parked in an obviously specially designed parking lot next to the house and few people walked in and out. I've stood here for a long time by now and as far as I observed, there wasn't a chance that more than 4 people are working there. The only one that left the house was an old couple that probably got there to report their missed cat and a pair of police officers that greeted another couple of police officers that got in. I assume they were switching shifts.
Otherwise, the man and the woman that left were still in their police clothing, which means that they might just get for a break and the others are holding positions meanwhile. That whole thing happened around thirty minutes ago which means, that their donut and coffee break should be over anytime soon.
I had the perfect place to observe the whole thing in front of me. There was a bush right next to the police station with a perfect little spot inside to hide. Not an effective thing to put next to a police station.
I checked my phone to see what time it is and immediately got confronted with a text from Hazel. "where are you?" it read. "Why can't you just get drunk like anyone else?", I mumbled to myself and typed an answer. "Bathroom is totally full. A girl is puking in the shower. Disgusting. Keep dancing I'll be right back after." I sent my lie and looked up.
Just in time, the pair of police officers came right back from their break. I put my phone away and kept having my eye on them. The pair that came before to hold their positions stepped out and all four started to smile. The man had a package of donuts in their hand and handed it the other guy that hasn't had a break. They obviously didn't expect anything to happen, so they talked a little in front of the police station, which means that only 2 persons are inside and there has to be at least one empty office room.
I used that situation and made my way out of the bush. I noticed an open window at the back of the house before. I took one last look and ran to the window.
I looked around before I pushed it open and climbed inside. The luck was on my side the second time today and I was right. The office was empty. A small smile crept on my face and I looked around. It looked like a typical office. A grey carpet, a big writing desk with two chairs and a computer on it. The light was on what told me that someone has just left for a short time. I could hear the four of them still talk through the open window. Their laughter filled the night and they just started a new topic. They wouldn't come back anytime soon.
I crept to the office door and turned the key, so nobody would interrupt me soon.
I quietly made my way to the computer, just to see it was already on too. "Hell, yeah!", I whispered and sat on one of the chairs. Somebody must have used the computer only minutes ago because it wasn't locked. Make that three.
I laid my hand on the mouse and searched for what I needed on the screen. For my way back to my gang. My family.
Plenty of files were opened on the desktop, but not what I was searching for. Oh come on, there have to be a person register somewhere.
I'm not exactly sure which one of the countless files I clicked, but it had to be the right one because hundred of names and addresses popped op on the screen. Phone numbers, pictures, and crimes. My eyes widened at the fact of how many of these persons had a red mark behind their name. Probably wanted criminals. That for sure wasn't just the list of people in Florida.
I clicked on the small magnifying glass on the corner of the screen and a type field popped up. I typed in the name I was searching for. The name that ghosted around my mind since the second I've heard it. The name that would be my personal ticket out of this hell.
Carter Smith.
I got the idea this morning when Antony mentioned that the police can find out any address. Carter is hiding from our biggest enemy. Because he knows about them. He's the only one that knows how to fight them and if I could find him, maybe I would find away.
A circle kept spinning which showed me that the program was searching. I tried not to panic. There are millions of people out there. It has to be normal.
My heart was beating faster with every second that passed by. "come on."
Then, the circle stopped and another sentence popped off.
"Person not found."
"No.", I whispered and tapped any button I could find. But the message kept popping up. "No, no, no!" I tried everything, typed his name over and over again. Maybe I spelled anything wrong. I tried everything, capital letters, different spellings and words that sounded similar. But nothing changed.
Person not found.
"No this can not be. I know you're here. I know it!" I said, this time louder. Even tho I've gotten to the point where I knew that nothing I did would change anything, I kept trying. "Stop. Hiding!", I said and slammed my hand on the keyboard.
Error.
I let out a hysterical groan and shook my head. This was my chance. The only chance.
I must've been so busy with despairing, I didn't even realize that the laughter outside has stopped. Minutes ago. And when I realized, it was too late. Only seconds of silence stood in the room before I noticed an obtrusively knock on the door. Voices. God damn it, Summer!
"there was a slump in the sixth" A man said and knocked again. "We have to get in there.", he said ."Are you sure you haven't locked?", a man asked and I heard the women answering. Her voice was almost as deep as his and for sure not happy. "Of course I am!"
And it that moment, she knew she fucked up.
I looked around in panic and focused on the still open window. I've done things like this millions of times. Why on earth does something like this have to happen to me a second time?
And then, I heard a noise, that coursed me to panic even more. The key inside the room fell to the floor, but the lock was twisting. Someone opened the door.
I closed the taps on the screen and jumped off the chair. I can't even explain how fast I moved my ass to the open window, my heart hammering inside of my chest.
The door flew open as I just reached the window and angry police officers were running inside. I did my best not to look at them and climbed up the window, their footsteps following. "Stop! Police!", one of them shouted. Of course, I did the opposite and moved even faster. I don't get why they scream 'stop' anyways. As if someone actually stops and be like 'oh damn it, you got me.' and this... this won't happen to me a second time.
The police officer was only a few steps away from me when I finally took the last step and jumped out of the window. "She's running away!", I heard him shouting as he reached the window as well. He didn't jump after me, but he stood there and screamed. I felt like I just escaped prison.
I didn't dare to look back, just kept running and running and even tho I've never run faster (almost), I felt like I've never been lower. Do you know those dreams in which you just can't seem to run? Those dreams in which someone or something is after you but you just can't move your legs as fast as you want to and you feel like a frickin stone? I've never prayed more for this to be a dream like this.
I almost reached the street next to the bush I was hiding before when the other 3 policemen were running out of the main entrance. "Hey!"
I took a curve and ran into the night. My breath was unregular and a sting was noticeable in my ribs. I wasn't far away by now, but I knew that they would get me if I kept going like this. I might have been fast, but they would be faster. And I was alone. I kept running, ignoring the pain in my side when I suddenly noticed a sound not so far away. Sirens.
"Fuck!", I screamed and increased the pace. At this point, the adrenaline took over me and the pain seemed nonexistent. I didn't know where to go, I was new again here, only remembered a few roads and me for sure haven't had time to check my phone about where the fuck I am.
I was lost at this point. I crossed a street and ran into a small side road. I had no clue where I was or where I was going. "Police!", I heard the speaker of the police cars and the sirens got louder with any second that passed by. They came nearer. And I was too slow.
I might have thought they lost me, but the sound of switching wheels thaught me wrong. Through my whole running, my hood somehow still managed to stay on my head. That was practically the only thing that went right while I ran for my life.
Then it happened: I reached an empty road. Somewhere in the middle of a quiet quarter in Florida. I stopped a second to reach after air and eventually let my heart somehow regenerate. I leaned my hands on my knees for a second, before I noticed the sound of a moving car again, right behind me. I didn't even focus if they were sirens or not, but I started running again.
Right when I almost gave up, a black car stopped right next to me with squeaky tires and a loud motor. I didn't know what was happening when the passenger door to the for sure extremely expensive car flew open and revealed black leather seats. I had no clue what the car model was called, but I didn't need a name to know that this car was more expensive than my whole existence.
I stopped in a heartbeat and stared confused at the car, that almost ran me over by stopping within a second.
"Get in!", I heard a male voice shouting from the inside. It was dark and the light didn't allow me to see who sat inside, all I could see was a big hand on the steering wheel. I didn't answer, just stared at the car.
That's when a big structure leaned in my direction and I could see big blue eyes and extremely dark Hair. A broad-shouldered guy looked at me, and I'm sure I've seen him before. Probably in a Calvin Klein add.
"You?!", I said as I recognized him from the hallway. Right in front of me ladies and gentlemen are: mister bad boy. "I'm sorry to say this again, sweetie, but get. in.", he repeated and looked in the back mirror. "No. I don't need your help.", I hissed and wanted to keep walking but the sound of sirens coming nearer with any second stopped me. "Are you sure about that?", He smirked and checked the back mirror again.
I wanted to say something when the red-blue lights illuminated the whole street and the sound of sirens wasn't far away anymore. A police car raced around the curve at the end of the road and with the sound of its wheels came also bad memories of the last time I got caught along and without me even realizing what I was doing, I hopped in the car.
I closed the door and mister whatever-his-name-is pressed the accelerator before I even closed the door completely, racing down the street in a big roar. "They're following!", I screamed and turned around to face the police cars right behind us. He for sure went way over the tempo limit, which only caused them to do the same. "Yeah, I can see that.", he mumbled without even looking at me. His eyes glued on the road right in front of us. He didn't use headlights, which made driving really difficult and something told me: this wasn't the first time he was doing this.
"I got this.", He said and switched the wheel to do an unexpected U-turn and well-known memories overflooded my brain. I wanted to shout, tell him that there must be a second police car. Warn him not to do the same mistake Chase did before, but he already knew and raced around the next curve.
The sound of sirens and racing wheels and motors seemed to be the only thing that filled the night. The police cars stopped at the curve and for a brief second, it seemed like we lost them. Mister unknown continued racing through the street, taking every single curve whether he was even allowed to drive in this direction or not. No matter how small and nondescript the road seemed to be. He wanted to confuse them.
he switched to the next gear and drove even faster than I even assumed it to be possible. The roar of his car has to be heard miles away. And suddenly I heard the sirens again, as he drove into the same direction we came from again. "What are you doing? They are coming!", I said and looked into the mirror. Then all of sudden he hit the breaks and I felt like I'd fly through the sore protection disc.
"get out.", he said dry and I couldn't believe my own ears. "What? you got to be kidding me, right?", I laughed sarcastically, but he stayed serious. "Get out and hide."
The sirens became louder again and a feeling inside of my chest told me they haven't lost us. I gave him a confused look but he stayed in his positions. He seemed to be serious about what he was doing. I looked into the back mirror and jumped out of the car. As soon as he was sure that I was hiding behind a big bush again, he continued doing what he was doing. The sirens got louder and he started racing again, the police cars following only a few feet behind.
And as fast as he came, he went off again. The police cars raced past me and suddenly every sound, every siren, every roar, every motor got quieter with every second. Further away.
And suddenly I was all alone again.
What. the. fuck. was. that?
