•Against the rules•
Sometimes all it needs to change a life completely is one second.
One second that'll turn your whole life upside down.
Maybe what caused your life to lose its direction was the progress of a long-time term, but it was the second you realized what happened that truly caused the chaos. It might be the second everything started.
Maybe it's the second you lose control over the wheel and hit the wall.
Maybe it's the second you finally spit out the truth to your loves about a long-kept secret.
Maybe it's the second you finally open that letter that laid on your table for a way to long.
Or maybe, just maybe, it's the second you meet this one certain person. And maybe, just maybe, you don't even realize that this second already changed everything. Because maybe...yeah, just maybe, it was the start of something that was never meant to be.
Because maybe...maybe it was more of a blessing than a curse.
_
My teeth started gathering because of the cold that ran its finger over my body.
I don't know what the hell led me to get into this car.
'what the hell', yeah, seemed to be a good sentence to describe this night. I didn't think this through. None of this. I mentally cursed and mentally abused myself over and over again. I wasn't careful. Especially not when I suddenly decided to trust a stranger. The whole thing was neither professional nor smart. And especially nothing from the things I've learned from the gang.
But still, I couldn't help myself but wondered who this mysterious guy was. or more importantly: why he seemed like he didn't do this whole thing for the first time. And here I am, in the middle of the night, wandering around in the middle of nowhere, because yeah, I had no clue where mister bad boy dropped me, wondering about a guy I barely met.
Cheers, summer! Sounds like a great beginning to the start of one episode of Americas 'teen mom'!
I kicked a stone in the middle of the walkway beside and wondered about why this stone seemed so familiar to me. I turned around and had the answer. I wasn't just befriending with a stone, but I was also walking in a circle. Wonderful.
You might think I still remember the streets of Florida. Well, you think false.
But I didn't care about that. Because what really blew my mind was the fact that I messed up. The words 'Person not found' ghosted around my brain. I knew that nobody except Chase and some other leaders has ever seen Carter Smith. And I know that he became more of a mythos than an actual person over the years. But I know that he exists. And this was the only way of finding him.
My only way to get back. And no matter what I had to do to find him, I would. Even if it will be the last thing I'll do on earth.
I continued walking down the street with nothing but a bad mood. It's been at least 20 minutes since this guy drove away from his getaway car and as far as I can tell, every police car seemed to follow him. I walked and walked. He probably got caught by now, so I'm pretty much out of danger.
Right when I thought I'd start hallucinating, bright headlights restricted my view as a black car came straight towards me. I lifted one hand in front of my eye to reject the light but spat my fingers only a little to see through. I laid my head on my shoulder and looked at the car, that slowly stopped in front of me. For the second time today.
He let down the window as I stood there, looking at him like I've just seen a ghost. "Is the word 'hiding' really so hard to understand?", he asked sarcastically and I couldn't believe what I just heard. "well, excuse me I'm not exactly listening to any stranger that literally dropped me in the middle of nowhere." I couldn't believe him.
I was too overwhelmed with the whole situation to ask anything else. "So, what are you waiting for?", he asked and motions me to get inside the car. "For me to get invisible.", I mumbled. More to myself than for him to hear. "Well, I'm pretty sure this won't happen." Seems like we're two now.
"So, are you gonna hop in or not?", he asked and I shook my head. "I pass, thanks." I hissed and have him a sweet smile before turning away. "So, you're telling me you gonna walk? It doesn't seem like you really know anyway, love.", he laughed. Did he just call me Love? Bastard.
"yeah." Nope.
"I don't think this is a good time for a girl to walk alone. I'm gonna be really sad when your face will be in the news tomorrow because you didn't listen to me.", he smirked and lifted an eyebrow.
I know the game he tried to play, too bad I'm the coach.
"Well, I'm sure that none of this would've happened if she didn't go with any stranger."
just because I'm the coach doesn't mean I can't play too.
He lifted his eyebrow even higher. Why can anyone do this though?
"Well, technically I'm not a stranger."
"Well, technically you are."
He let out a quiet laugh and ran his fingers through his deep brown hair. He seems like he was thinking, then stopped again. A cocky smile decorated his striking face as he looked me up and down. Please, don't tell me this guy is checking me out.
"Listen, I honestly don't have a reason to rape you or anything. I mean I just saved you. So you can just stay here and continue walking in circles or hop in. But please hurry, the police might still search around here and I don't think they'll let one of us go." He was making a point here.
I still had no clue what was going on, and especially did I not have a clue why it actually scared me. I hated not having the control. And I barely know this guy a few minutes and he already seems to try to steal mine. Not with me.
I sigh and walked towards the nearside. I open the door and let myself down into the black leather seat. He just seems as surprised as I am, because he just starts the engine and starts to drive. I focused my view on the roads in front of us.
"Not really talk active, are we?", he asked as he drove down the street as if he wasn't just chased by a few police cars. I'm sorry I have a lot of better things to think about right now than entertaining you, smartass.
"What's your name?", he asked.
"Willow.", I responded.
He lifted his eyebrow at my lie and proceed to drive.
He kept on checking the back mirror, but not as many times enough to be sure that no one is following, which kind of started to make me curious. I was about to say something, but the constant reminder inside of my head that I had to find another way of finding Carter blocked my mouth. Along with my brain.
"Might I ask why I exactly had to save you from getting caught up by the police officers?", he broke the silence and I could tell he was holding back a grin. I hated myself for getting in this awkward situation, but right now I can't find a way to talk me out of it.
"So I don't get caught up by the police officers?"
He smiled and simply passed a red light. Not that I'd care. "That's not what I meant and I'm pretty sure you know it.", he corrected and couldn't help but watch in the back mirror as well. The street was empty. As empty as a college kid's fridge. No one was following.
"Why did you help me earlier?", I asked and finally snatched my head to look at him. A single curl fell in front of his piercing blue eyes, that we're still focused on the road. "You needed help.", He scruffs and something told me this wasn't the whole story.
"first of all: I didn't need your help, I need no ones to help. And secondly, that doesn't really explain why the hell you were racing through the streets as if you were on a getaway yourself." I observed his black hoodie that matched his black jeans. Actually, he was wearing all black. I wasn't able to see a lot, thanks to the lighting, but I don't need the whole lighting of New York to see that this wasn't one of his daily looks.
He sighed. "It was a win-win situation. The police were searching for me anyways and you were running from them as well. Why causing two chases if you could get one? They probably thought you were there to cover up for me or anything like this when you hopped into my car. They'll think we're partners and won't search for the two of us alone in different genres but for us in one crime." He looked at me and again, a cocky smile covered his lips.
"So whatever you were doing in there, they will probably think it has something to do with what I did, distraction maybe, and won't spend their anyway boring chiefs finding out what it was. I dropped you so that if I got caught, you'd still have a chance to run."
I needed a second to understand what he said. It was smart. "Thank you.", I mumbled. Way to drop my pride even more today.
He luckily ignored what I said and focused on the road ahead of us again. I played with one single curl of my long blonde hair and tried to think about any other ways to find a person that didn't seem to exist anymore. If there is any higher force out there, please help me!
I'm in the car of an Idiot and don't for once in my life have a plan B. Not exactly my gloriest days.
"You should not drive that street, the police station is kind of near, they'll suspect you if we pass them.", I reminded him when he was about to turn the curve towards the police station again. "Or they won't suspect me because no one is dumb enough to be that obvious and drive past them when they were just searching for you." He winked at me and I immediately wanted to puke.
Even tho he said otherwise, he did what I suggested and took the other turn.
"But if I think of it- no one would break into a police station as well, so-"
I snatched my head to his direction and immediately shut him off. "Congratulations! You can think! Never knew a dick had a brain." I waited for him to be pissed off or anything, but he just fired back. "Oh, trust me, It does." oh my god, did he just-
I shook my head and rolled my eyes. "What were you doing in there?", he asked again, amused by my madness. "I'll say it over and over again if you need to hear it: None. of. your. business." He turns another turn and drives past a few shops. We're getting into the lighter part of the city again. "What were you doing? Why were you on the run? Let me guess, some cheap amateur drug-deal went wrong?"
a small criminal, exactly what I needed in my failing life right now. Let the adults, handle this boy. (as a metaphor, he's probably a Lil older than me, but still.)
"Meh...Broke into some house." He said it like it was nothing. "Please don't tell me someone ever gets caught by doing this.", I rolled my eyes. Said the person that got caught by doing exactly this.
I remember the policewoman talking about it earlier, but never spent a second thought on it.
"I owe someone a lot of money, that's kind of the easiest way to get it. Next to other business of course." he shrugs and I wanted to facepalm myself in the face. "Why are you telling me all this? No offense, but you give 'dumb' a whole new meaning."
"Well, you're not likely to tell anyone since I could do the same. You didn't do less than me this night, hun." puke count 2. And even tho I hated to admit that he was right, he was. Next to the fact that I didn't care about anything he did, I wasn't exactly in the position to do anything against him."I don't even know your name."
"It doesn't matter what I was doing in there, because it didn't lead me to anything anyways.", I sighed and leaned my head against the window. To say that my head hurt was an understatement. But to say that all the thinking made me feel like a zombie was slurping my brain out of my head with a straw wasn't.
I felt his eyes squint over to me but couldn't tell his facial expression. I closed my eyes for a brief second and listened to the sound of the engine since my last minute mate didn't play music. The moonshine brushed my cheeks and made me remember why I loved the night so much. I think it was never the stars or the shine of the half-moon that made me fall in love with the night. It's always been the deeper thought of the night. The night is like a lonely beauty with a reputation that doesn't satisfy it's a deeper meaning.
"I tried to find a person that doesn't seem to exist.", I word vomit. He was right, he wasn't in the position to tell anyone either. Hell even if he did, I still had the option to lie and he for sure as hell didn't know why I was searching for him anyways.
His eyes found his way back to me for a brief second again, still, he seemed unbothered about anything. "I'm not judging you, but ever thought about searching for him on Facebook?", he asked and I rolled my eyes. "I don't exactly think I'll find him there.", I said.
"So you're obviously aren't searching for a random guy, and I guess he had a reason to disappear and you didn't think of the opportunity for him simply changing his name?" I jerked my head up. Why wasn't I thinking of this before? I mentally face palmed myself. How the hell do you find someone who obviously doesn't want to be found? "So, you didn't.", he noted and now let me look like the amateur.
"I don't know why you are searching for him, but there are plenty of ways of finding a person that changed his name." I shook my head and sighed again. I can't believe I didn't think about this earlier. "I didn't need you to realize this, thanks." he quietly let out a laugh. "Well, you needed me tonight. Say what you want, but Florida is my territory, so please don't consider breaking into some police stations again that might end up on my costs."
I lifted my eyebrow, then laughed and shook my head again. I've fully dipped into my 'How the hell am I going to find Carter Smith' world when he stopped at a red light. I don't really know why he suddenly decided to look at the law, but his driving style suddenly changed from 'This street is mine' to 'okay maybe I could drive normal just a little'. I already hated everything about this guy. From his cocky smile to his conceited way to wink. He was smoking hot and he knew it.
"I don't want to destroy your deep thoughts you seem to have now, but where exactly can I drop you?", he broke the silence and it hit me like a bomb. "oh my god!", I realized and started rummaging through my jacket pocket. he eyed me as if he was trying to find out what exactly my problem was. I finally found my mobile phone and pressed the on the button. I totally had it mute and totally forgot to check earlier. It was basically the middle of the night and even tho I was sure that the party was still going, Hazel probably wondered where I was by now. Because no one ever visits a toilet for hours straight.
My eyes did wander over the display and confirmed my thoughts. 12 missed calls and 10 missed text messages. All from Hazel. "Is the bathroom still used?" "went to check there, where are you??" "Summer I'm starting to worry, asked Stacey about you. Where the hell are you?" "I'm downstairs, please join!!" "Summer???"
And the list of messages goes on.
"Crap!", I cursed under my breath. "You have to drop me, now!", I addressed the driver in hectic. "Right here?" I looked out of the window. "No, yes, ugh." I began to panic. If Tatumn found out about this I'd be screwed. "There's a party! Drop me there, now!" , I shouted, while my phone started vibrating. Incoming call from Hazel.
"Hurry!"
"Woah, calm down, Tiger!" he took a turn and to my surprise, we finally reached a street I actually recognized. The red little house with a nice wheelchair entrance was like a street sign to me. We weren't far away from Sallys- or Stacey's- house, but still too far away.
"Can't you drive a little faster?", I pressed and watched my phone informing me that I just missed a call. "Well, yeah I could, but the street sign says I shouldn't.", He smirked and decided now was a good time to start provoking me. "You didn't care about that when you were literally chased by police officers a few minutes ago." The anger inside me grew with any second that passed. "I swear to god if you-" Then he started laughing.
He shook his head and stepped on the accelerator. "looking so innocent..." He looked at me and again looked me up and down, then focusing his eyes on the road again. "I might believe you if I didn't know.", he shrugs. I rolled my eyes and sigh. "Trust me...you know nothing." And that, for once wasn't a lie. Because the times I've been able to call myself innocent passed way by.
"I know all I need to know.", He said in a mysterious tone, I was sure he practiced while looking in the mirror with a devil stare.
But right before I could say anything, the image of a big house with drunk teenagers on the roof and lights in all colors came into my sight and made finally let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. The loud bass was shaking our butts from meters away.
I watched the people getting bigger with any second we came nearer and all the drunk teenagers made me feel like no one even realized I was gone and I started to wonder why I actually started to panic. But I started to realize right after. If Hazel told Tatumn she would question everything and my facade would break.
He got slower so he wouldn't drive any brandy corpse over as we finally reached the house.
I wasn't really surprised he exactly knew where the party was starting without me telling him an address. He looked like someone that would be at any party from anyone at any time.
"We're here.", He said as if I didn't realize it before. Oh, thank you're telling me! I didn't see all those people and the lights! I thought this was a family dinner!
I checked the time on the display on my phone. "You're late to a party, Isn't this against the rules or something?", I said and he gave me a curious look. "Well, let me guess, you are the typical high school, bad boy. The guy that gets everything he wants by just snapping his fingers. Who made himself a reputation by making out with almost every girl in school, huh?"
I looked him up and down this time.
I can't deny he's hot, but I wouldn't fall for that. Not everything that's hot is good. Like coffee! It's hot and looks amazing but the truth is, it's bitter as hell.
"I'm sure you were invited to this party and you're late." I determined and looked him dead in the eyes. He stayed silent for a second when suddenly he started to lean in.
His head slowly drew closer to me and his move surprised me so much, that I didn't move a muscle.
"Well, you pointed it out before, sweetheart. I'm a bad boy.", he said in a raw voice, then came even nearer.
Even in the car, he towered over me and his face stopped next to my ear. Goosebumps made their way down my spine as his breath, which by the way smells like mint, brushed my cheek.
For a moment I forgot how to breathe because of the weather.
"We make them.", he whispered.
His presence made me feel uncomfortable for a second and the smell of his cologne reached my nose strils. For a second every muscle inside me seemed to freeze.
Then I remembered who I am.
I saw what he did there. And he was good. But I was better.
I've taken my chance and drew my head even closer to his to the point, where our skin was almost touching. I looked him dead in the clear blue eyes before I moved my lips to his ear.
"And I break them."
And before he could say a word, I opened the door and left.
